Week 14 - My Choice
One subject that Iā€™ve become more interested in is motion graphics. Iā€™ve always appreciated animation, but after taking Motion Graphics this semester, along with this course, I gained even more of an appreciation - seeing just how much work goes into creating a piece but gaining the knowledge to even begin the project. It takes immense focus to dive into motion graphics, itā€™s almost like learning a new language.

Week 13 - New Media
TheĀ ā€œdigital aestheticā€ is so pleasing because with digital media moving forward, it allows more options in interactivity and opens the door for experimentation. The ability to mix a variety of elements, mediums, and have them interact with each other continues to grow. Some of the interactions are now being developed to be more connected to the user - giving a user the option to do as they please with the elements they are given.Ā  Examples:
- video games
- 3D modelingĀ

Week 12 - New Media
The fields with the great impact on interactive design include web design and development, motion graphics, music, and cinematography.Ā As web development continues to evolve, more options for interactivity becomes available, also becoming more dependent on motion graphics.Ā

Week 11 - Graphic Design
The citizen designer concept revolves around the accessibility of design toĀ ā€˜normalā€™ citizens. It is much easier for people to design as they please, without necessarily needing a degree. This also includes professionals who attempt to address societal issues either through or in addition to their employers/commercial work. The citizen designer works to keepĀ ā€œthe balance use of natural, social, and economic capital for the continued health of the planet and future generations.ā€

Week 7 - Architecture
Two key principles of Universal Design -Ā
Ā - Maximum possible access and appeal for all users to all facilities
- To provide enough accommodations for success and remove all obstacles in the environment that make a disability debilitating Examples:
- Increase of ramps being built to accommodate those in wheel chairs - Elevator installations to also help disabled persons

Reproduction of one of Massey-Fergusonā€™s tin signs
- Bold, high contrast styling represents industrial revolution era posters (Massey-Ferguson was founded in 1847)
Tumblr media
This is a sketch of a semi-functional modern cat toy. It moves itself around on the floor, rotates, and shoots a red laser out of a slit on the top of the mound.Ā
Tumblr media
Sketch of modern dolly
- TheĀ ā€œdollyā€ was invented in the industrial revolution era, functionally designed to assist in moving heavy objects
Tumblr media
Small side table, unknown source
- post modern style frameĀ
Tumblr media
Fountain built into the lobby of the Edgewater Apartment building on Prospect Avenue.Ā
- Resembles art-nouveau style architecture
- Built in 1920
Tumblr media
Spotlight lamp
- Industrial/machine aestheticĀ
- Pulley is functional and visually pleasing

In all honesty, Iā€™m not sure what this is. It looks like it could be used to hang hats or bananas - but I could be completely wrong. If you have any insight into the designā€™s function, I would love to hear.Ā
Tumblr media
Macrame plant hanger - holds two plants
- Although macrame was popularized in households during the 1970s, the craft peaked during the Victorian eraĀ
- Made out of heavy, supportive cordĀ
- Aesthetically pleasing but also functions as a space-saver by moving plants from floors/tables

Week 2 - Design Thinking
How would I define design?
Design is innovation. Itā€™s not only about solving a problem, but creating a plan, developing meaning, and communicating a message. Design can take on many forms such as engineering, architecture, and art. It utilizes todayā€™s technological advances both stylistically and functionally.
A few examples:Ā
Every day, we see people talking or texting on their cellphones. At school, the majority of my peers are using their own laptops. In lectures, students use their laptops as a way to take notes in an organized, efficient manner. These devices are more popular, evident examples because they are used for a variety of tasks.
When I first came to college in September of 2012, I had a DVD player that allowed me to watch a movie while it was connected to my TV. At this time, my family had also invested in a Netflix account that I could stream on my laptop. When Netflix originally launched, it did not have as many programs to watch on it. However, what it lacked was fulfilled by the development of similar applications like Hulu, Amazon Prime TV, and Sling TV. Shortly after all of these applications were released, a design that allowed viewers to have access to all on these applications on one device was created. Even though these all required separate payments for use, products like ROKU and Amazon Firestick attracted consumers ā€œby enhancing brand perception through smart, evocative advertising and communication strategies.ā€
Although having more easily accessible media entertainment is nice, innovative designs are being used to help transform our health as well. Every single day, I use my electric toothbrush multiple times to brush my teeth. Itā€™s easy to use, clean, and portable. It also has a set time that itā€™ll be on and my teeth feel significantly cleaner than after using a traditional toothbrush.
Another example of this is my FITBIT bracelet that I wear 24/7. I had never been interested in a device that tracked my health, but I was fortunate enough to be given one as a present for my birthday last year. After seeing the results that it generates about my daily caloric burning, exercise, and sleeping patterns I have been much more focused on keeping those numbers in a healthy range. The development of this design has the potential to not only positively affect the person wearing the watch, but to a much larger crowd of people. The FITBIT tracker has the ability to sync up with friends or family, creating challenges within social groups. There are other fitness trackers similar to this, but these innovative device designs have had the ability to help obtain personal health information without going to see a doctor. With the continual advancements of these personal health devices, one can hope for more affordable accessā€“teaching us all to live healthier lifestyles.
I think the most important concept in this weekā€™s reading is the last page,Ā A Design Thinkerā€™s Personality Profile.Ā It showsĀ that the process/steps of design thinking can be applied to many different practices, itā€™s not inclusive to design.Ā

Week 1 - About Me
Welcome to my online journal!
My name is Allison (Ally) Reed and I am a DVC senior. I graduated in December of 2016 with a BA in Studio Arts, then decided to return to UWM to further my studies. I have always had a passion for creative processes and art has had a substantial influence on constructing the person I am. Iā€™ve loved painting and drawing ever since I was little but Iā€™ve grown to love the world of possibilities that comes from combining analogy with digital.Ā
My experience-
During my first Bachelorā€™s degree, I took the digital core classes needed to graduate. I was able to obtain Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 before the programs were taken off of the market for purchase. While I was taking time off of school, I attempted to teach myself more about the programs and experimented with digitally altering previous drawings and paintings. In these two years I took on multiple freelance commissions and attempted to work more within the programs. In January of 2019, I began my second degree in Design and Visual Communication - the amount Iā€™ve learned since has been overwhelming, exciting, and has helped me grow exponentially. Iā€™ve learned a lot but still have so much more to experience!
Inspiration-
As an artist, I find my inspiration from the world around me. I am an explorer, I like to spend a significant amount of time outdoors (weather permitting), and some of my fondest memories involve wandering outside on summer days looking for the perfect spot to set up my hammock. I also enjoy travelingā€”I spent a semester abroad in Italy and made my way throughout Europe by stumbling about with friends to some of the worldā€™s most amazing historical landmarks. I find myself attracted to artwork that involves people and places, made by the artist as a way to physically materialize a memory. These parts of life are what I find the most meaning in, that invoke the most emotionā€”igniting my inspiration.
Have you recently purchased any items where design was a deciding factor over a competitor?
I am a prime example of a consumer who impulsively buys something based on the label or physical appearance. I still quality check and try to keep my spending within a budget, but if there is a small difference in prices, Iā€™ll go for the item that has a more aesthetically pleasing label.Ā
