So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.) Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.

If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:

What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)

What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)

What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

Silence. They grow pink.

"Many people--of those aware of the creature--believe lichen to be a singular organism. It is, in a sense, but it is more accurate to describe it as two. Every single one of the thirteen-to-fifteen thousand species of lichen are engaged in a mutualistic relationship between fungi and algae, or occasionally cyanobacteria. These relationships are so common that nearly 20% of all fungal species seek them out. When a lichen forms, these two component individuals become enmeshed.

"They act in perfect harmony: the algae provides carbohydrates via photosynthesis, nourishing them both, and the fungi provides protection and structure. It roots the algae to its substrate, and provides nutrients and water it collects from its environment. Many component species can survive alone, but together they thrive. They create something entirely new, with many novel properties not found in their origin species. It is estimated that 6–8% of Earth's land surface is covered by lichens, and yet new discoveries are made about them every day.

ACTUALLY I HAVE MORE THINGS TO SAY

Jax. I love Jax. He tries so hard. Everyday he fights. For the Citadel. For Respect. For himself. Against himself. But everyone knows he’s not going to make it. He can’t, and he doesn’t, at least not in the way he wanted. A warboy at the end of his half life, so far away from the gates he’s desperate to reach.

Enter Ellus. Ellus is a defective glitch of a shifter, broken technology that should have been destroyed. Not limited by their programming, they can take any form, any shape. Do anything, be anything.

And they decide to be an ass.

And why not. They were labelled a problem the second they where born, and they are determined to prove everybody right.

Now in their defence, Earth was supposed to be a dead planet, a nice place to hide out while the heat died down a little. It’s not their fault that five minutes in they encounter a death cult. That worships chrome, of all things. With their silver blood they are practically being handed this opportunity on a plate.

So they come up with a plan. It’s a good plan. Get to the Citadel. Become a war boy. Climb the ranks. And when the time is right? Declare the Almighty Imortan Joe a fraud, say they’re the one that can open the gates. Watch the whole thing come crumbling down and then skip off home to dinner.

Easy.

But then there’s Jax. Fucking Jax. Tiny, useless, pathetic waste of space. It’s stupid how hard he tries. He’s going to fail. Doesn’t he know he’s going to fail? Then why is he trying so hard, why does he keep fighting, trying to prove them wrong. It’s pointless. Why does he keep doing it. Why, why, why.

Better not to think about it.

Which would have been much easier to do if they hadn’t been made part of Jax’s crew...

She felt her cheeks burn hotter, knew Sofi was smiling wider. She was going to make Sky say it.

How could this be so hard? She knew it was because the only thing in the world that she truly wanted was to love Sofi, and be loved by Sofi.
