you’re welcome to fight me on saying that the light furies are a non-species of dragon and the light fury might as well be the only light fury but the reason why i say this is because it’s true. i call the three other light furies in the movie plausibly deniable animation errors because the light fury as a species functions exactly like toothless.

we have not seen any other light furies in the franchise other than in the hidden world, where they basically were set dressing. whenever light furies are mentioned it will always be the light fury referred to and talked about. you pick up any official httyd game, and you can play, train, or obtain the light fury, but not a light fury, despite the fact they’re a species with a population.

i’ve got a lot of beef with dreamworks because of their obsession with needing toothless to be the most special unique god king dragon ever because it’s ruined a lot of things including his character, but i’m kind of petty so the thing that makes me the most upset about them needing toothless to be special is the sand wraiths.

explanation: sand wraiths are my favorite fury species but i found out earlier this year that they were originally supposed to be called sand furies, and were only renamed to sand wraiths because they didn’t want them...to compete with toothless.

nevermind the fact that we light furies now and i know people like to point out the individual light furies that show up in blink or you’ll miss it moments but the light furies are a non-species of dragon if i have ever seen one. they made the light fury first and all the other individuals might as well be plausibly deniable animation errors because across all of httyd canon you will start to realize that they should’ve just made her the last of her kind like toothless instead of going through the trouble of saying she’s a species of dragon.

my opinion overall about this whole horrifically inbred nightlights situation is that it happened because they wanted nightlights so bad but they didn’t want night furies despite them being necessary in order to make the nightlights a species, because for some reason we have to keep toothless special.

if they want to say grimmel killed all the night furies, then fine. but if that’s gonna be the case then nightlights shouldn’t exist anymore. if there are no night furies, then as the centuries go by only the light furies should remain, with maybe a select few individuals displaying very rare, faint recessive traits that could easily be confused as species variation.

with all dragons across the world being forced into a hollow earth and turning it into nothing more than a giant glowing fight pit, this would have been the perfect opportunity to show us how the dragons species we know and love changed, adapted, or evolved, and even give those semi-canon hybrid dragons their on screen debuts!

we should’ve been shown what modern day monstrous nightmares, deadly nadders, gronckles, and hideous zipplebacks looked like. or what species of dragons have been so successful that they haven’t changed much if at all, like crocodiles. hybrid crosses like deathly galeslashes, abomibumbles, ghastly zapplejacks, voltknappers, and cyclarions getting on screen debuts would be incredibly fitting and can tell us much about their parent breeds like how common they are and if they interbreed often or not.

and on the flipside of that, they could show whether if those hybrids also had to change or evolve in some way, those same hybrids interbreeding with other species of dragons until centuries down the line we see entirely new species of dragons that have little traits and adaptations that we could point to and go, “you guys got that from this dragon species!”

just like what i think they should’ve done with the nightlights. the nightlights should’ve been the ancestors of an entirely new species of fury. i honestly don’t know why they wouldn’t do this in the first place, especially since they seem to be going all in with the lightning abilities with them. plausible or not, the idea that down the line, due to centuries of incidental intermingling with dragons like skrills, light furies, sand wraiths, shockjaws, and maybe seashockers, you very well could have a tidal class, cavern dwelling, lightning fury is infinitely more interesting than...well, literally everything that’s going on with the nightlights.

like this is driving me nuts and it’s because they did not have to do this. like in that tweet, they could have said yes, the nightlights do mate with other species. they’d still be pretty inbred because again, just by looking at them the light fury genes and night fury genes especially in those dragons are clearly intense, but it would have been better than saying, “they're animals and we can’t judge nature,” which doesn’t make sense at all because,

1.) the dragons in this franchise are way too fucking intelligent to make me think that they would just mindlessly inbreed this tightly and 2.) it can basically be considered semi-canon that dragons—other than toothless and the light fury because oh my gods, they themselves are the canon example of this—do successfully interbreed with other compatible dragon species for a variety of reasons!

so why are they inbreeding like this? who is surrounding them from all sides pointing dragon root laced arrows at them to force them to do this? there’s just no in-universe explanation for why the nightlights somehow couldn’t find compatible mates that were not directly related to them, and it leaves you with no choice but to assume one of two things:

1.) the best option, which is that grimmel is a punk ass lying lil’ bitch and not only did he not kill all the night furies, but the night fury population is booming enough that they can easily mate with different light furies to the point nightlights can be a species 1000 years later.

or 2.) the worst option, which is that the nightlights purposely choose to inbreed as tight as they do, and unfortunately this is the most canonically likely option, because every single nightlight i’ve seen so far is simply black and white in terms of coloring, with blue or green eyes. if you don’t know, this is why i say they’re tightly inbred specifically; you cannot tell me that light furies only come in blue eyes, white feminine glitter dragon and night furies only come in green eyes, black masculine dragon.

i’m sorry i just had to get this out i’ve been thinking about it since i fell asleep last night; this is going to sound insane, but listen.

the nightlights having all of these insane new lightning based abilities that neither light furies or night furies had, and apparently some individuals being able to inherit toothless' alpha abilities—the damn mind control in particular—literal generations, centuries down his line...i’m sorry but right now the only in-universe explanation for this is that the nightlights are on some house targaryen shit, where they’re purposely inbreeding in order to keep these insane abilities, some of which have probably popped up through mutation due to the tightening of the gene pool.

(the actual explanation to this problem though is that whoever is behind the show and the nightlights either didn’t care or wasn’t thinking about all these very unfortunate implications that come with the nightlights existing a thousand years later.)

Can’t get over how hard Dreamworks and HTTYD wrote itself into a corner. Either there are no more Night Furies and Thunder is the most inbred creature to ever exist or there are, which cements Grimmel as a lying non-threat and the separation as even more pointless and the last movie as stupid.

me when i’m a deathly galeslash chilling in the nine realms just minding my business and some random nightlight shows up and tries to mind control me with an ability they only have because they’re all descended from some god king alpha nobody remembers or cares about and their gene pool is the size of an evaporated rain drop:

so if the nightlights...if the nightlights are a species...an entire species...if the nightlights are an entire species with no ‘‘‘outside’’’ influence...

why is one of the writers for tnr saying weird shit like this like this didn't answer that person's question what are you going on about

ultimately this is gonna be the reason why i will never understand people who insist that the light fury as character is perfectly fine. because she’s not fine, she’s not even an actual character.

she’s a plot device. dean deblois said this himself. she is the generic wife mate to toothless and mother of his offspring. these are objective facts. i actually think that it’s almost gross that dart, ruffrunner, and pouncer have more actual personality and character than she does. this isn’t even mentioning thunder, the “descendant of the great alpha toothless,” as they say with a much quieter, less grandiose mention of light fury. because oh right, she’s here too, we guess. and not at all a narrative object we threw in here just so toothless could reproduce.

and that’s thing: most, if not the entirety of the light fury’s popularity comes from what she could have been. headcanons, redesigns, fix-its and alternate endings and alternate universes. fanon. made up. nothing but hopes and dreams.

“queen of the hidden world,” but is and or was she really? i feel like being the queen of all dragons would at least get you mentioned as such instead of just as the ‘king’s wife’, essentially.
