Peoples experience of the film cats is my new favourite tumblr genre.
So I watched Cats yesterday
When the certificate for the film came up ahead of it, two women next to me went "U??! They think this film is for children???".
The first scene began, and the performers gyrated down to the ground, and a man behind me went "Jesus" out loud, in this appalled and transfixed tone.
The film continued. Within five minutes, the whole audience was audibly going "What the FUCK" at regular intervals - sometimes you could just hear horrified giggling all around the room.
Half an hour in, a couple got up and walked out.
Mr Mistoffeles sang about being an entirely black cat, and I accidentally said aloud "But he's black and white." Taylor Swift sang about Macavity being ginger, and I actually yelled "BUT HE'S NOT GINGER". A woman in the front went "Oh my god, she's right."
Ian McKellen turned up and said the words "Meow meow meow meow" apropos of literally nothing at all. Everyone in the room fucking howled. We'd forged a silent, unspoken bond. The whole audience were united in the shared traumatic fever dream in which we found ourselves. Five minutes later, my husband sneezed, and felt so comfortable among the community that had molded itself around us that he automatically said out loud "Sorry, I'm allergic to cats", and a sizeable chunk of the audience genuinely laughed, albeit mildly hysterically.
The film finished with Judi Dench breaking the fourth wall, and we all squirmed and looked at each other instead of the screen.
The credits rolled and the whole audience applauded and cheered. It was the most transformative experience of my life. I begin 2020 already changed.
