LONG BLOG POST
Tron (1982) and The Matrix (1999) are two films that fall under the film genre know as Tech-noir. It combines film noir, and science fiction. The most common theme that is portrayed in this genre is the digital world of computer circuitry and virtual reality, and that is also the case within these two films. The digital world is used as a metaphor or in other words, a double for physical reality, the city, and the mind. This is the world that is simulated in our minds to distract us from the true reality. The setting in these films normally takes place within the digitally constructed virtual reality, as it does in Tron and the Matrix. In these films, the digital or virtual reality becomes a zone identified with the desolate, degenerating, and sterile, as well as extreme violence, but occasionally it becomes a place where those sacrificed to technology may continue to enjoy a limited existence. There appears to be a distinct metaphoric association between the city and the digital world which is developed by many scenes of aerial camera shots of urban areas and special effect visualizations of digital energy, such as numerals and numbers, and information transfers on circuit boards or inside computer hardware. The digital reality as a metaphor for the reality of the mind itself may draw attention to the differences between the artificial and the natural just like in The Matrix, where only those who are fully aware of reality, like Neo, are able to comprehend those said differences. Another Theme associated with these two films is Violence. Violence seems to be a natural route for films such as these for the fact that is allows for the use of interesting and stunning CG and motion graphics that are limitless to any boundaries and overall provide for much more appealing visual story as the plot unfolds. Both The Matric and Tron has their fair share of action composing of digital animation which can also add to the illusionary effect that the characters are truly within a simulated world of numerical information. Now just to speak more upon this sort of simulated reality, it is clear to say that logistically, a world that is bound by numerical information may not be open to random events and sequences due to the fact that its bound by said numerical information, but with an imagination, anything is possible, and this is also true within the two films.
