Beyond the Propaganda

If you’re anything like me, you first stumbled into the kinky side of Tumblr thanks to the myriad of porn gifs, titillating memes, and erotic stories and videos that get passed around like a Bic at a Dave Matthews Band concert.  When strung together, all of these images and tales weave a tapestry of beautiful people doing incredibly filthy things and having the time of their lives doing them.  When you first discover this world, it’s like all of your wildest fantasies were suddenly on display in a giant kink buffet, and you’ve got an all-you-can-eat coupon sitting in your pocket.

While the exact details of my journey into this world may differ from many of yours, the origin story and the mile markers are probably familiar.  Maybe you, like me, had a partner you started out with.  You began your journey together, sending each other the things that drew your attention and that captured your imagination, and through the reblogging and discussions, you explored your common interests together. When one of you found something new and exciting, you shared it with the other, and talked about why you liked it and if it was something you wanted to try.

Perhaps you started this journey by yourself.  Maybe you were bored and looking for an escape from the drudgeries of a monotonous life.  Perhaps you were looking for a way to spice up a flagging love life or needed a place to explore the things you always thought were forbidden to you.  Maybe you were exiting a relationship and taking from it lessons about what you wanted and needed from your next one, and hoping to find ways to spot those things in a partner.  Maybe, you were even looking for such a person amongst the denizens of this oft-maligned hellsite.  

Regardless of your particular origin story, you now find yourself somewhere in your journey through this world.  Maybe you’re only just beginning and still trying to get your bearings, and maybe you’ve been around the block more times than a city bus driver.  No matter your current location within the vast expanse of the kink Tumblr wilderness, the one constant is the propaganda.  You literally cannot miss it (unless you take extraordinary measures to block pictures and videos, and even then you still run across the wildly varying qualities of erotica that get tossed about).  Every scroll of your dash and examination of a new blog seems to yield the same familiar parade of taught young bodies being savaged by muscular men who wield equipment that could make a Clydesdale blush with shame.

What sets my favorite blogs apart from the porn blogs is that they talk about the moments that are really going to matter.  The times when things aren’t just boobs and ball gags or canes and cocks.  The blogs that I truly admire are the ones that plunge into the work and the effort involved in maintaining a dynamic and fostering the kind of connection that is necessary for someone like me to have in order to make these types of relationships possible in the first place.  These are the blogs that write about all of the things beyond the propaganda.

The world is rife with people who are quick to get in line when it’s time for them to fuck you, but what about when your demons are screaming and you’re feeling lost and alone?  How many people are quick to volunteer when it’s late and you can’t sleep and you just need a friendly voice instead of a hard cock?  How many people are going to be there for you when you’re sick or when you’ve had a bad day and you just need to vent and the only thing you need is a willing ear?  When you are feeling small and helpless and have nothing to offer to someone, how many people are rushing to your side to carry you to safety?

The truth is that in the heat of the moment, these wild fantasies and crazy experiences are great, but once those moments have passed you by, you find they leave you cold.  Like a junkie chasing a high, you can jump from one hot moment to the next, always moving, always trying to stay warm, but at some point you’re going to grow weary.  When the high wears off and the party is over, who’s going to be there to help you clean up?  Everyone wants to drink, but nobody wants to stick around once the fun is gone.

No matter where you are in this journey, look beyond the propaganda.  Know that this life is so much more than what you’re being shown, and the things that truly matter aren’t the ones that seem the most exciting or visually appealing.  You’re not going to see a lot of pictures of guys with bags under their eyes on the phone at 4am because their person needed to hear their voice as their plane taxied onto the runway and they were growing anxious.  You’re not going to see a lot of breathless stories written about the person who made sure you took your meds or drove you to work when the roads were covered in snow and ice so that  you didn’t have to drive them.  Seeing two people sitting on the couch with hot chocolate watching tv might not get you off, but it’s the quiet moments and the mutual sacrifices and the compromises that makes relationships work.

When you’re trying to decide if someone is Daddy or Dom material, or if you’re looking for a new sub or little, find someone you relate to as a person.  Don’t look for someone with the most toys or the biggest collection of kink, but the one that listens to you and that you never want to stop talking to.  Bring along the ones who love and care about you, and who see you as a whole person and not just an object for their gratification.  At this buffet, it’s not about having the fullest plate or the most trips through the line, but about enjoying the meal that you’ve chosen.
