I'm bad at phrasing things so bare with me but I think we need to talk about how some of the actors are treated by the Newsies fandom.
The amount of times I've seen Ryan Breslin completely left out of conversations surrounding Race (the character he originated) or made fun of for not being as attractive as Ben Cook is actually kinda upsetting. I don't think I've ever seen anyone talk about Brendon Stimson (OBC Oscar Delancey, Jack Kelly u/s) or Adam Kaplan (Morris Delancey, Jack Kelly u/s) the same way they talk about Mike Faist (OBC Morris Delancey, Jack Kelly u/s) even though they're both amazing and were actually with the show longer than he was. Neither of them are even listed on the wiki as Jack Kelly understudies. Capathia Jenkins is super talented and she plays Medda really really well. Even if you like the movie version of her character better that's not an excuse to make fun of her portrayal in the broadway show.
This is just my opinion and you don't have to agree with any of it but it's how I feel and I just wanted to put my thoughts out there because I love this show and it's fandom so much.

Newsies Halloween Costumes of 2023
HC that modern Jack throws giant Halloween parties every year and you must be in costume to enter.
Here’s what the kids go as:
Jack Kelly - Undead Cowboy
Always is sole variation of a Cowboy because of his childhood nickname. He’s done classic Cowboy, sexy cowboy, goth cowboy, futuristic cowboy and so forth. This year, he gets wasted first and professes his undying love to David, asking him to marry him before he passes out.
Racetrack Higgins - Barbie
Obviously. Race loves Barbie. He loves pink. And he loves the way his crush looks at him when he’s the brightest thing in the room. He’s gets super drunk, but not quite as drunk as Jack, but does way more weed than his brother and wakes up in Spot’s bed the next morning. ;)
David Jacobs - Dave.
This is his first time coming to the party, invited by Jack and told Jack he wasn't a costume guy but at the insistance of Jack, he slapped on a nametag, taking inspo from his favorite show and showing up as "Dave" instead of "David". It's more of a reference than a costume.
Spot Conlon - Vampire
Spot is Jack’s friend who secretly has a crush on his little brother. Spot doesn’t drink because he secretly values everyone’s safety, and when Race follows him home, he tucks him into bed and sleeps on the couch, texting Jack that he’s perfectly safe.
Katherine Plumber - Sexy Cat
Katherine is Jack closest friend in the world. The two previously dated and Katherine likes the simple but sexy costumes. Her and Sarah accidentally show up as sexy animals and they do go home together. But they’re also dating.
Crutchie Morris - Spiderman
Charlie is Jack’s oldest friend and shows up every year as a super hero because he’s a nerd and he always documents the party for everyone because he knows no one but Spot will remember it. He gets drunk, but he can hold his liquor.
Sarah Jacobs - Sexy Mouse
Sarah always grabs the first costume she can find and pretends like she put in the most effort. She has no idea her twin is coming to Jack’s party. She gets blackout drunk.

I wanted to share a story I thought you would like from last night’s screening. When Kenny was introducing all the dancers who were there at the end he said the family of Dominic Lucero was there. He went on to say that Dominic was a wonderful dancer and that in case we didn’t know who he was, he was the Newsie who memorably is swinging from the ceiling fan at the end of “King of New York,” and he thanked his family for being there.
He didn’t say this but some people I think knew that Dominic died of cancer when he was just 26 in 1994 - two years after Newsies.
So obviously the ceiling fan moment is just such a cool, iconic ‘Newsies’ choreography thing (at least to me) so at the end of the number everyone just cheered and burst into applause and though we did that for every number it was really loud and you knew it was for Dominic’s family. It was just a really nice moment.

I wish there was more love for Ryan Kopel’s interpretation of Davey. I love 92sies Davey, I love Ben’s Davey and I love Ryan’s Davey. I love how they all to the core have something so different but they are all so inherently (took me so fucking long to spell that omg) Davey! Tbh I even feel the UK production isn’t giving as much love to Davey but I 100% get that it could just be me being the biggest Davey stan wanting as much content as possible, and what I love so much about the UK production is it feels so much more like a strong ensemble and not Jack and the boys and us having to pick out random Newsies for a sliver of content and us rolling with it and making the content for ourselves. I’m very hungover I hope this made sense 😭
LMFAO i honestly do know what u mean anon!! but i feel like this is because it's a more well-rounded production- the stakes of the plot feel really solid in this version, jack and katherine as romantic leads are stronger, pulitzer is more of a villain than he's felt before. like they are going by the beats of the script and the show very well in terms of foundational stuff. romance, villain, situational stakes. it makes sense.
and davey is the sidekick. and he's literally an amazing sidekick, and ryan makes davey's arc very apparent which is apparent to us bc we know this show so well. like his defensive nature at the beginning, his heated denial still being riddled with hesitancy and nerves but still getting the words out that he wants to say. is so. david. and then that need to say his words gains confidence in the right situations: 1. when hes giving jack his words in WWK, 2. when he sings in seize the day, and 3. when he confronts jack in WWK reprise. (the rally is not the right situation for him- huge crowd of new faces he "doesn't even know" and no jack to speak through).
davey textually, if you will, has three looks and that's it.
i think what's more important for us as ppl who know dis shit down pat tbh is that ryan has given davey so much love, and tbh i think the cast has too– davey has SO many good onstage interactions with race (which has an ARC TOO LIKE!!), crutchie, he and les are fantastic together (better than bway imo), spot!!, and he has lots of cute ensemble moments. maybe the production doesn't "love" davey, but this show loves davey, this performance loves davey, and thats what rly counts for me.

Henris getting found out by Jack?
For sure! Here’s the first Henris scene I wrote too!
Jack had had a rough day. He’d accidentally eaten something with dairy in it and had been leaning over the toilet in the boy’s locker room, throwing up since third period. He looked pale when he walked through the door, finally. He left before the last period had started. He was supposed to meet Katherine at her doctor’s appointment later, but he wasn’t sure he’d be able to get back up if he laid down now.
No one else should’ve been home. Jack had a schedule for all the kids in the house. It was currently 1:30 in the afternoon. School for the older kids let out at 2:45 and the younger kids were supposed to be picked up at 3. No one came home until 3:12.
So when Jack heard someone giggling in the kitchen, he was taken aback. He was hunched over a bit and he slowly put his bag down on the ground so he could shuffle in to see who was breaking the rules. He wasn’t prepared for what he saw. “Get the hell off of my little brother!” he cried.
Morris jumped up immediately from where he’d been sitting on the ground in a pile of loose flour, hands up Henry’s shirt and their lips locked. Henry quickly followed suit. “Jack, it ain’t what it looks like— whoa, are you okay?”
Jack lunged at Morris who immediately rushed to get out of the house. He ran out the backdoor and Jack chased him. “Get back here, you coward!” He watched Delancey jump the fence so he stopped. “Stupid, stupid, kid,” he growled as Henry grabbed his arm.
“Don’t chase him!” Henry insisted. “Jackie, he wasn’t hurting me. He loves me, I love him, Jack, I love him.”
Jack stared at Henry for a long time. Then he shook his head. “Henry, you don’t know what that means,” he insisted, walking back to the house and reaching for the phone. Trespassing is a felony. He could get Morris in trouble for that.
“Jack, I love him, he’s not a bad person—“
“You’re being stupid, Henry!” Jack hissed. “He’s not in love with you and you are just so lovesick, you’re letting yourself fall right into this! He’s the reason Racer’s been to the hospital twice in the past three months! He’s the reason I almost died last year! He’s a psychopath! Not to mention, homophobic—“
“It was an act, Jack! It’s internalized homophobia!” Henry cried, grabbing the phone out of Jack’s hand. “His uncle is awful to him! He’s just as fucked up as we are—“
“No! We don’t hurt other people for fun!” Jack growled. “We are nothing alike—“
“He reminds me so much of you, actually. You’re both too stupid to see past any little incident that happens!” Henry growled.
Jack scoffed. “Incident? That’s what you call him literally poisoning me?” he hissed.
“He didn’t know it could kill you—“
“Fuck off, Hen. You can’t see him no more. This is not love. You don’t know what love is!” Jack spat.
“And you do? You knocked up some girl, so what?! You don’t love her! We all see the way you look at Davey!” Henry shot.
And Jack froze.
It was then that Henry knew he’d taken it too far. He looked down. Jack was having a horrible time trying to navigate this with no real parents to help him. Katherine was pregnant. They hadn’t meant for it to happen. And Henry knew how sensitive this subject was.
But before he could apologize, Jack was storming away and slamming the door to his room.
Henry didn’t follow him. Jack’s definitely did not want to see him right now.
