I am so happy that Ariana released another album! Though I did like Sweetener, I feel that this is a departure and such a better album, to be honest. It seems like the two albums are kind of a metaphor for her life. Sweetener is more of the celebrity who shows the world that she is perfect and thank u, next is the part of Ariana that is vulnerable and telling us what she really feels.
I love that this album is a lot more badass r&b and rap vibes because it feels like the music she wants to make. It is only natural to grow up and like making/listening to different music as you do and that’s what she’s doing. Her sound doesn’t have to stay bubblegum pop because she isn’t a teenager anymore.
Song by Song:
imagine- I loved this song when I first heard it. After everything I’ve read, I do think that it’s about Mac. I loved them together and do believe they truly had a forever love. I like how sweet this song is and it’s a great tribute- especially love the whistle tones
needy- This song reminds me of her first and second albums. Nothing particularly flashy about it, I just like it.
NASA- She just has a way with words. I really like how easy this song is to sing along to
bloodline- Nonna, in the beginning, is perfect. I LOVE the beat and flow of this song so much! I would GET DOWN if I heard this in the club.
fake smile- As I said before, I think that Sweetener and this album are metaphors for different sides of her life and this song exemplifies that difference. This song is anthemic even though it doesn’t sound like most anthems. It is an important issue to talk about and I think it reigns true for many people
***bad idea- This is definitely my favorite song on the album. I cannot get enough of it and have been listening to it nonstop since the album released. I especially love the beat and the departure/outro after the song is “over”. The vocals are insane too. This is just such a fun song and also reminds people that Ari is still in her 20s and likes to have fun.
make up- Such a cheeky song. It’s very clever and fun to sing along to like 7 rings and thank u, next
***ghostin- This song is so sad but I’m sure it happens in a lot of relationships. I believe this is another song about Mac and it makes me wish that not only we had him back because he was an amazing person, but so they could have their happy ending
in my head- OBSESSED with the vocal gymnastics in this song. I think this is about Pete in some way too
7 rings- This song made me so happy when it came out. I love that she went more Nicki with it and it sounds like the kind of music she wants to be making. I always love a little rap and r&b so this was right up my street
thank u,next- I think this was the best first single for this album. Many times an artist doesn’t release their best song as their first single, but this was so out of the box for anyone.
***break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored- I saw the video before listening to the song and was FLOORED. This is such a seductive song and I am so glad Ari is going in this direction.

DJ Snake has finally released his debut album following a number of great singles including, “Turn Down for What”, “You Know You Like It”, and “Lean On”. The album is filled with features from notable talent, including Jerimih, Travis Scott, and Bipolar Sunshine, but my favorite song is called “Let Me Love You” and features Justin Bieber.
Justin Bieber has released his comeback album recently and the rest of the music he has featured on has shown how he wants to be seen in the music world. I love the album and have really liked every song he has put out since he returned to music. “Let Me Love You” is more of a chill song, but it has a very catchy beat- that of which DJ Snake is known for. Check it out here and follow DJ Snake’s socials!

I have been listening to the song “Capsize” by Frenship featuring Emily Warren a lot lately. The song is incredible, and the music video is even better. Their voices blend so beautifully and it is the perfect song whether you want to dance or just chill out. Frenship will be touring with Cherub this fall, so be sure to see them if you love them as much as I do! Enjoy the video below and be sure to follow their socials.

TWENTY88 is the new collaborative project between Big Sean and Jhene Aiko. They released a self titled 8 track album which tells the story of the highs and lows of a relationship, with insights into conflict, memories, love, sex, and more. Though a lot of publications did not like the project, I loved it and think they should release more. I love each artist on their own, and think that putting them together was genius. Listen to my favorite song off the project, DĂ©jĂ  vu below and follow them on their socials.

I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It is The 1975′s sophomore follow up to their debut self titled, The 1975. Their debut was so incredible and they were one of the surprise breakout artists of 2014. This album is a departure from their first, but it shows how much they have grown as a band in 2 years. It is more melodic and flows as an entire album rather than a collection of singles, which I like more. Listen to their single, Somebody Else, below:

Magic! put out one of my favorite albums of 2014 and they’ve finally released the first single from their upcoming sophomore album. Sean Paul has done some features with artists including Simple Plan over the past couple of years, and I think he was the perfect fit for this song. Magic! is the perfect raggae/pop blend and they are even better live. Check out the new song below.

Daya showed up on the music scene when she was just 16 years old with her hit “Hideaway”. Since then, she has performed around the U.S. and has a new feature song with popular EDM Dj’s, The Chainsmokers.
If you turn on any pop radio station these days, you are bound to hear Daya’s hit song Hideaway. It’s lyrics are so refreshing when most of all you hear are songs about hook ups and break ups, and the catchy beat doesn’t hurt. I saw Daya this past weekend and every one of her songs interested me, especially her new feature on The Chainsmoker’s song, Don’t Let Me Down. Listen here:

Anderson .Paak got his big break on Dr. Dre’s latest release, Compton. His new album, Malibu, his second release has received the most attention from critics and new fans alike.
I did not know anything about Anderson .Paak before SXSW, but I had heard his name in passing a few times, which made me want to check him out. I was able to see him perform twice and loved both sets. Since seeing him live, I have listened to Malibu on Spotify and love how almost every track has a different vibe. The overall album is a great listen and I hope everyone gives it a chance. Here is one of my favorite songs, Lite Weight:

You may know AlunaGeorge from their hit song “You Know You Like It” which has been on the radio constantly, but seeing them live is a different story. AlunaGeorge is made up of a vocalist, Aluna Francis, and a producer, George Reid who met in 2009 and mainly released remixes of up and coming artists. They made it to mainstream in 2011 and in 2016, Aluna played her first SXSW.
Before seeing Aluna live, I thought AlunaGeorge was a duo group and I would be seeing two people live. Aluna honestly reminds me of Rihanna, and I loved every minute of her performance. She would stop to play a beat on the drum pads or play with a synth every once in awhile, but that did not mess with her vocal performance at all. One of my favorite songs of hers is a feature she did for Jack U, listen here:

THEY. is a duo from LA made up of Dante and Drew Love. In 2015 they released the Nü Religion EP which includes three songs that have become equally as successful by themselves as the complete EP. They are currently on tour with Bryson Tiller, another amazing up and coming r&b artist.
THEY. is the R&B/Rap duo we need in the industry. In my opinion, we’ve come to a time in rap where the lyrics are not as intelligent as they were before and the beats are all the same. THEY. is refreshing because there isn’t just one type of song they have. Since they are producers as well, the music they release is varied. Their set had me dancing along through every song and there wasn’t one song that I didn’t like. Here is my favorite:

TOTEM’s voice is unparalleled in the industry right now. He is a singer/songwriter from New York. He released his EP, Pride, in 2015 and has been rising from there.
I found out about him through Spotify awhile ago and fell in love. When I found out that he was playing SXSW, I made sure to see each show. When he performs, you just have to close your eyes and feel the space and performance when you see him live. Countdown is my favorite song of his, but honestly love everything he has put out.

Wow- there is so much to say about Jack Garratt, his talent is incredible. He is a singer/songwriter from England and his debut album, Phase, came out on February 19th, 2016. He plays numerous instruments including the keyboard, guitar, and drums.
I had heard his name before SXSW, but did not listen to his music- which was such a mistake. He definitely came out as one of my favorite acts that I saw during the week. I saw him three times and each performance had as much energy and passion as the first. He played without a band but brought drum pads, a guitar, and a keyboard which he played by himself and sometimes played two instruments at the same time. It’s rare to see new musicians with such passion, who really look like they want to be there performing and who put their everything into their performance, which is what made me love him so much.
I am finally listening to his album on Spotify, and it’s crazy how different his songs sound live than on the album. I’m going to upload a live video for you to watch just so you can see what made me fall in love with him, but be sure to check out his album Phase.

Kevin Garrett is a singer/songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. He recently released his debut EP Mellow Drama, which includes the singles “Coloring” and “Control,” and has been featured in publications such as The Fader and on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist.
I had never heard of Kevin Garrett before SXSW 2016, but automatically fell in love with his voice once I saw him. He reminded me of a more refined Sam Smith, who I also love so much, plus he plays the piano which instantly caught my interest. One song that I connected with is Coloring, which is also his most listened to song on Spotify. Check it out here:

Hi, my name is Anne-Marie. I have been working in the music industry since high school, and have been obsessed with going to concerts my whole life. Music is a huge part of my life- if not all of it, and I am constantly discovering new artists, so I thought I would start a blog about it.
I am the resident music lover in my group of friends, and I constantly make playlists and introduce my friends to new songs and artists who they end up loving, and think it’s time I share my findings with the world.
I have been attending South By Southwest in Austin, Texas since 2012 and have discovered countless artists that I would not have known about otherwise. The 2016 event just ended, so I thought this would be a great time to start this blog. I’ll be making single posts about many of these artists, but here is who I discovered this year:
Kevin Garrett
Jack Garratt
TOTEM
THEY
AlunaGeorge
Anderson. Paak & The Free Nationals
Gryffin
Daya
Fantastic Negrito
Desiigner
Kat Dahlia
Tory Lanez
Kehlani
Troye Sivan
