The Uthodurn team: the chaos demons, the ones we were worried about being let off the leash without their ‘handlers’, spend their time saving ancient creatures, doing whatever they can to bring light to the city and each other in these days of great fear and darkness, standing together and finding love and new friendship.
The Issylra team: the ‘good’ ones, the sensible ones, the holders of the braincell. Falling apart. Trying so hard to hold each other together that they can’t stop their own fraying. Their own frustration. The darkness they’ve been fighting for so long.
Laudna kills, feels the beat of Delilah briarwood in her head and can’t even tell what of the death she brings is her own. Lost, wandering once again, scrambling for control with broken nails.
Orym cracks, that endless hope, that pragmatism that always seems to side with life breaking under the weight. He’s a widower. Why do none of them understand that he’s a widower? He has felt loss, and will kill before he feels more.
Ashton ducks, looks away, pokes for questions only til it hurts. Looks at Orym and Laudna, two people scarred by tragedy, proof that maybe they can still find joy regardless. And he watches them fall. So determined to hold them all together, broken pieces fixed with gold, that he turns.
And all this, with the knowledge that their friends are alive. Knowledge that the Uthodurn team didn’t have. Maybe it’s that that broke the camel’s back: they don’t need to have hope that their friends are out there waiting, all that’s left to do now is fight.
