Before Nesta even opened her eyes, she knew that she’d gotten some of the best sleep she’d had in months. She knew it was early, since Nyx hadn’t even woken them up for his morning bottle yet. Sighing comfortably, she settled deeper into her pillows, the weight of a heavy arm slung over her waist, pulling her in close.
With sudden clarity, she remembered the events of the night before. She remembered the damn kiss that had started it all. She remembered the orgasms Cassian had given her over and over. She remembered seeing something shining in his eyes that had nothing to do with lust or sex.
She was sure it was reflected in her own, but couldn’t work up the nerve to let herself think about what they’d done last night, what it may have implied. What lines they may have crossed.
And the fact that she really didn’t give a damn.
Nesta couldn’t remember the last time she was this happy, and as much as she tried to pretend it wasn’t thanks to the man sleeping soundly behind her, in her bed, she couldn’t lie to herself.
So she gently rolled over, careful not to wake him, and took in his sleeping face.
It was kind of funny.
Nesta had known Cassian for a while, for five years, and before that in passing, considering Feyre and Rhysand’s relationship. She had watched him age, had watched him grow from a young man into the man that had taken her the night before, but looking at him now…
There was an innocence about him when he slept.
He snored, quietly, completely unaware that she was awake, that she was watching him.
He was cute.
So, so cute.
If he awoke at that very moment and saw her watching him sleep, she would have surely been mortified, but she couldn’t bring herself to care, she couldn’t look away.
Memories from the night before flashed through her mind, and it only made her that much happier. She couldn’t remember the last time she had fallen asleep in a man’s arms, but with Cassian, she had fallen asleep peacefully, nearly instantly, and slept amazingly.
There was something about Cassian that she couldn’t quite put her finger on, but she knew that she liked it.
She dared to gently brush a kiss over his cheek, before carefully climbing out of bed, his heavy arm making that a much harder endeavor than she was expecting. But he slept on soundly, not even stirring as she slipped from beneath the sheets and hurried into her closet. She wasn’t embarrassed by her nakedness, not after everything that had happened last night, but she knew that if he caught her naked, they were likely to take far longer getting downstairs to start their morning.
Not that she would have minded, but she was pretty sure neglecting Nyx was not a good enough reason for sex.
No, she’d enjoy him again later, as thoroughly as he’d enjoyed her last night, if he was willing. And she had no doubt that he would be.
Tying her robe around her waist, Nesta slipped from the closet into her room, glancing to make sure Cassian was still fast asleep. His snore confirmed he was.
Her chuckle was quiet as she entered the hall, sneaking down a few doors and opening Nyx’s. He was still asleep, as well, and with a smile, Nesta cracked his door and quietly padded down the stairs.
The kitchen was still a mess, his half-smashed cake on the counter and their clothes strewn around the room. Blushing, she picked them up one by one and tossed them into the laundry room, before making Nyx a bottle and starting on some scrambled eggs for his breakfast.
She could hardly focus. She was constantly thinking about the man upstairs, still sleeping soundly in her bed. Mixing a little cheese into the eggs, she stirred the eggs up in the pan before dumping them directly onto Nyx’s high chair tray.
Last time they’d slept together, Cassian had made her breakfast and then they’d both agreed it would never happen again. Regardless of the fact that it very much had happened again, Nesta didn’t like the sinking feeling she felt in her heart when she thought about having to agree to that once more.
Staring at the ingredients she’d pulled out of the fridge, Nesta sighed and braced her hands on the counter in front of her.
She wasn’t sure when it had happened, but she couldn’t ignore the fact that she had feelings for Cassian anymore. At some point, he’d gone from being a pain in her ass to the favorite part of her day. And that terrified her.
Letting him continue to sleep, she crept upstairs and gently woke Nyx up before he could start screaming, and carried him down to the kitchen, his sleepy head resting on her shoulder. He rubbed his eyes as she put him in his high chair, handing him the bottle, and she started working on their breakfast.
The entire time he ate, Nyx watched Nesta curiously, as if he knew something was up.
Maybe it was just her paranoia. Then again, he was Feyre and Rhysand’s kid and they were always snooping into Cassian and Nesta’s business.
Feyre and Rhysand.
Nesta bet they were pretty damn proud of themselves at the moment.
She heard him moving around upstairs and her heart began to beat a little bit faster. This was it, the moment of truth.
She cursed, all the while Nyx kept watching her as he stuffed his mouth with scrambled eggs.
Making herself busy at the stove, she quickly dropped some bacon into the hot skillet, sizzling filling the kitchen. Within seconds, a few pieces of bread were in the toaster, and she was rummaging through the refrigerator for the blackberry jam she knew he preferred.
Nyx’s babbling announced his arrival, and she turned to find Cassian standing behind his high chair, wearing nothing but a pair of sweatpants slung low on his hips. He picked up a small clump of eggs and popped it into his mouth, and Nyx angrily began talking at him, though the made up words were unintelligible.
“He doesn’t like to share,” she said, closing the fridge door with a hip.
Cassian grinned. “Desperate times call for desperate measures. I worked up an appetite last night.”
Nesta’s cheeks turned a soft shade of pink. “Is that so?”
Cassian nodded and walked toward her, slowly. Nesta remained still until he was standing just in front of her. “I have to confess that I was hoping you’d be there when I woke up this morning.”
Nesta stepped closer to him. “Breakfast and the baby called.”
Cassian scoffed and muttered, “Priorities.”
Nesta laughed quietly, but the sound was muffled by Cassian’s lips against hers.
It was almost instinct to lean into him, to smile against his lips. When she pulled back just a hair, his hazel eyes were bright. She whispered, “Good morning.”
“Morning,” he breathed, his mouth still so close to hers.
She blushed, even though she couldn’t figure out why and turned to the stove. “I…wasn’t sure what to expect this morning.”
Cassian hesitated. “What did you think I’d do?”
Nesta sighed, scratching her head. “I don’t know. I thought you might act like it never happened. Or, you’d say it was only a one time thing like last time.”
Cassian cocked his head to the side. “Last time I didn’t sleep in your bed.”
“And that changes things?” Nesta asked, quietly.
“Last night changed things,” Cassian replied, brushing her hair back out of her face. “At least, for me it did.”
“Me too,” Nesta replied, without any hesitation.
Cassian’s eyes softened. “Nesta, I-.”
“NANANANANANANANA!”
They both spun around, where Nyx was watching them with the most precious of pissed off expressions. His tray was empty, practically licked clean, and Nyx was not having it.
Cassian chuckled as he took a banana out of the fruit basket and peeled it before cutting it up into slices. “He’s awfully full of it this morning, isn’t he?”
“I think he knows,” she said, rolling her eyes as she flipped the bacon. “Not specifically what happened, but he knows something is…different between us.”
He paused his cutting and turned back to her, pausing with a hip resting on the counter. “Good different or bad different?”
“Good different,” she said, smiling. She cracked a few eggs into a bowl and mixed them up with some milk. “Definitely good different.”
For a moment, Cassian didn’t say anything, but when she turned he was grinning. “Really good different?”
Nesta rolled her eyes. “Shut up.” She turned back around. “But yes.”
“Good,” he breathed, coming up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist. “What’ve you got going on today?”
“Work,” she said. “Seeing how the bar renovation is going. Looks like you’ll have to hire your replacement soon with how quickly everything is moving.”
Cassian groaned. “That’s the part I’m looking towards the least. I hate interviews. I hate being in them, I hate giving them, they’re awful.”
“But the sooner you give them, the sooner you leave that bar and come work at mine,” she crooned.
“Yours?” he repeated, offended.
Nesta snorted. “Ours.”
He and Kallias had both given their notice to the owner of the dive bar they worked in. He wasn’t thrilled, but he had always been a gruff bastard. He’d informed Cassian he wasn’t going anywhere until he’d hired not only his replacement, but Kal’s, as well.
“Speaking of,” he sighed, glancing at the clock. “I’ve got one scheduled for eleven-thirty. What time are you going to the restaurant?”
She poured the egg mixture into the skillet she’d cooked the crispy bacon in moments before and began laying the bacon on the toast she’d made. “Whenever,” she shrugged. “Helion is opening today. What time can Viviane be here?”
“Ten. I’m not working a shift today, so after the interview I can either come back here and give her the rest of the day off, or I can come to the restaurant.”
Nesta chewed slowly as she thought about it. “I wouldn’t mind if you came to the restaurant.”
“Then that’s what I’ll do,” Cassian said, placing the cut-up banana in front of a cranky Nyx. “And you, little man, better be good for Viv today. Because you’re grumpy.”
In response, Nyx spit out the piece of banana he had put in his mouth and smushed up the rest on his tray.
After scarfing down the breakfast that Nesta had made, and making a show of thanking her for it, Cassian was cleaning up the kitchen then hurrying upstairs to shower. Nesta was left cleaning up a fussy, banana-covered Nyx.
“I don’t even think you wanted to eat the banana, kiddo,” she muttered, cleaning off his tray, before wiping him down with an ungodly amount of baby wipes. “I think it was just to play in.”
He had plenty to say about that, just nothing Nesta could understand.
A few minutes later, freshly showered and dressed Cassian came downstairs, where Nyx was playing on the living room floor. She was up the stairs a minute later, hurrying to take her own shower. After an hour, she returned, purse and keys in hand. “I’m going to go ahead and head to the restaurant. I’ll see you in a little while?”
He nodded and as she made for the door, Cassian stood, catching her by the elbow and tugging her back to him. She stumbled a step, but he crushed her to his chest and pressed a kiss to her lips. When he pulled back, they were both grinning like fools. “I’ll see you in a little while,” he repeated.
“Okay.” She was backing towards the door, that smile looking like it was a permanent fixture on her face, before slipping out and leaving he and Nyx alone.
Who was watching him again, looking so much like Rhysand with that little eyebrow raised.
Cassian couldn’t help but snort and say, “This is your fault you know.”
A few hours later, right after Nyx had gone down for his mid- morning nap, Cassian heard a knock on the front door. Opening the door, Viviane rushed in. “I’m so sorry I’m late,” she said, shaking her head.
Cass glanced at the clock on the mantle. “It’s barely ten-fifteen,” he chuckled. “No big deal, you’re fine.”
She nodded. “Sorry, just— It’s been a crazy morning.”
“Everything okay?” Cassian asked. Viv was usually steady, so sure of everything she did or said.
“Yeah,” she replied, waving off his question. “I’m fine. Ran into my ex at the coffee shop and— Ugh, ignore me. Don’t worry about it. Is Nyx down for his nap?”
“Yeah, he’s been out for about fifteen minutes. He had a pretty big breakfast, so I doubt he’ll be too hungry when he wakes up.” Cassian gnawed on his lip for a second debating on whether he should ask what was on his mind. After considering how well throwing caution to this wind has worked for him last night, he decided why the hell not. “Does that mean you’re single? Since you bumped into your ex?”
Viviane froze and blinked. “Yes, but I don’t date my employers—”
“No, no,” he quickly said, holding his hands out in placation. “It’s not me. It’s a friend of mine and I think you two might hit it off.”
Viviane raised a brow. “A friend, huh?”
“Guy I’ve worked with for years,” Cassian went on. “Great guy, in fact. You’ll enjoy yourself, guaranteed.”
“Guaranteed?” Viviane chuckled. “Well, I can’t say no to that, can I?”
Cassian grinned. “No, you can’t, and neither can he. Tomorrow night, you free?”
“I suppose I am, if my boss is giving me the night off,” she laughed.
“He is, and it’ll be great, we’ll all go out,” Cassian said. “You and Kal, and me and Nesta.”
“Kal,” she said, the shortened name rolling off her tongue. “Yeah, alright. That sounds fun.”
“Perfect,” Cassian said, patting her on the shoulder as he swept past her. “I’ve got to get going, but we should be home around five or so. Call if you need anything.”
Viviane chuckled. “You say that every time, and have I ever called?”
“It’s a habit!” he called, as he hurried out the door.
When he got to the bar, Kallias had everything under control, which meant Cassian was taking a table in the far corner, waiting for his interviewee to arrive.
Sadly, this wasn’t the interview to replace his own job. That was proving to be far more tedious than he was expecting. But an hour later, after shaking the young man’s hand, Cassian let out a sigh of relief as he left.
“And how’d that go?” Kallias asked, wiping down a few glasses that were drying atop the bar.
“Well, your position is officially filled,” he replied, sitting across from him at the bar. “So congratulations.”
“Cheers,” he chuckled, raising the empty glass towards Cassian. “When are we celebrating?”
“Tomorrow night, actually,” Cassian said, crossing his arms over his chest.
Kal snorted. “Seriously? I was kidding.”
“I’m not,” Cassian replied, shrugging. “We’re going out tomorrow night. You, me, Nesta, and Viviane.”
Kallias blinked. “The hot nanny?”
Cassian grinned. “Yeah.”
Kallias looked at Cassian suspiciously. “I thought you were kidding when you said you were setting us up.”
“Oh, I never kid about love,” Cassian said, winking.
Kallias raised a brow. “Love? Who the hell are you?”
Cassian filled his glass and took a gulp of beer. “Just meet us at Rita’s at eight tomorrow.”
Kallilas continued to stare at him for a long while. “You slept with her again, didn’t you?”
Cassian’s grin widened. “Tomorrow. Rita’s. Eight.”
And with that, he chugged his beer and left.
*
The next night, Cassian and Nesta dropped Nyx off at Elain’s before making their way to Rita’s.
“Our first date,” Cassian crooned, reaching his hand across the car to Nesta’s.
She took it fondly. “Our first date? After all we’ve been through, do we even qualify for a first date?”
“Why?” Cassian scoffed. “Just because we’ve been sleeping together and living with each other and raising a kid together?” He snorted. “Of course, we deserve a first date.”
Nesta rolled her eyes but did not protest.
Cassian had slept in her bed last night after another night of lovemaking. Even though it didn’t seem possible, it got better with each time. The more they got to know each other’s bodies, the more familiar with one another they became, the more they became one in intimacy, the more amazing it was.
“You look amazing tonight,” Cassian said, quietly. “In case I haven’t told you that yet tonight.”
He had.
Multiple times.
But, Nesta couldn’t blame him. She did look amazing in her navy blue dress and her blush heels. She looked over at Cassian, in his jeans and button down shirt.
Coincidentally, it wasn’t much different than what he had worn on their actual first date five years before. She chuckled, and he looked over at her, brow raised.
“This is actually our second date,” she said.
Cassian shook his head, amused, before looking back out the window as he turned into the parking lot. “Well, hopefully this date goes better than that one did.”
Nesta agreed.
As soon as Cassian opened Nesta’s door, they spotted Viviane pulling into the parking lot. They knew she was a pretty girl, but she usually showed up to work with a ponytail, jeans, and a t-shirt. Now, she had really dressed to impress.
Cassian whistled as she got out of her car and Vivane blushed as Nesta’ jabbed him in the ribs.
“You look beautiful,” Nesta told Vivane.
“Thanks,” she said, and Nesta could tell the nanny was a little nervous, a little uncomfortable.
“I see Kal’s truck,” Cassian said, gesturing for the women to follow. “I guess he’s already inside.”
Indeed he was and he’d already gotten a table for the four of them and was working on a pitcher of a beer.
“Hey, man,” Cassian greeted him as Kallias stood and shook his hand. “This is Nesta,” he said, placing a hand on her back.
“It’s nice to finally meet you,” she said, reaching for his hand as well. They shook hands and Kallias smiled.
“You, too,” he replied. “I guess I should call you boss now, huh?”
“No, no, no,” she laughed, shaking her head. “Please don’t.”
“And this,” Cassian interrupted, rolling his eyes at the two of them, “is Viviane.”
As if he somehow hadn’t noticed the blond beauty behind Cassian until this moment, Kallias looked up at her and blinked. He was about to make some sort of hot nanny joke when Kallias breathed, “Viv?”
She was looking at him with the same dumbfounded look Kallias had on his face. “Kallias… Hey.”
Cassian and Nesta looked between the two, then at each other, and after a moment, Nesta asked, “You two know each other?”
Kallias still looked like he was trying to figure out what planet he was on, so Viviane answered, “We were…childhood friends. But my family moved to Velaris when I started middle school.” She shook her head, but she had been looking at Kallias the whole time. “I had no idea you were in Velaris.”
He finally remembered to speak, though Cassian was beginning to wonder if he’d need to answer for him. “I came out here for college. Loved the city and decided to stay.”
“College?” Viviane repeated. “You’re telling me that you’ve been here since your freshman year, and you’ve never called?”
Kallias chuckled. “I didn’t even know you still lived here!”
“Hmm,” Viviane said, taking a seat across from him. “Well, what a small world, hmm?”
“Yeah,” Kallias repeated, “small world.”
Cassian took a seat by Kallias and Nesta sat across from them as they went a little bit more in depth into their long lost friendship. Apparently they had grown up in the same neighborhood and had always gone to the same elementary school. Kallias was a year older than Viviane, but when he went into the seventh grade and Viviane was going into sixth, her family moved to Velaris for her father’s work.
They had never talked again after that. Their friendship was nothing more than a simple, joyful memory.
Seeing them now, Nesta thought, she just knew the two of them had gotten into trouble when they were little. Between their jokes and sly looks at one another, and the obvious chemistry, they had surely been up to no good and gave both sets of parents a run for their money.
“I’m going to the bar,” Cassian announced, looking at Nesta. “Care to join?”
Nesta had a feeling that it was less about going to the bar and more about giving the newfound couple beside them a few minutes alone. She nodded, and took his hand as they walked toward the bar on the other side of the room.
“They’re cute together,” Nesta said, sitting on a barstool.
Cassian sat on the one next to her. “Oh, I know. You know, I’ve gotta say, I feel pretty damn accomplished right now. I definitely made this happen.”
Nesta couldn’t help but roll her eyes at him, even as she leaned into his embrace. She wanted nothing more than to poke fun at him, to mess with him about his unexpected matchmaking skills, but as she looked at the two happy people laughing at the table across the bar, she couldn’t help but wonder if that’s the gift that Rhysand and Feyre had tried to give them all those years ago.
Even now, Nesta’s chest tightened as she smiled, so thankful for her meddling, baby sister.

Sitting crammed between Elain and Feyre on the gray couch in Lana’s office, Nesta has to cross her legs prettily and pretend she doesn’t want to peel out of her skin right there. She doesn’t know what she was thinking when she invited her sisters to one of her therapy sessions, but she’s assuming it would be considered rude to kick them out now.
“Who wants to speak first?” Lana’s bob swings as she looks at each of them. The office is ice cold today, and Feyre and Elain’s presence doesn’t help the chill in the air.
Nesta crosses her arms before she can be asked to speak. “No, thank you,” she says. She knows everyone probably expects better from her, but no way in hell is she going to be the first to open up in front of this crowd. “Feyre,” she turns to her youngest sister instead, “why don’t you say something?”
“Actually, why don’t you set the example, Nesta?” Lana gives her a look, making her cheeks redden with irritation.
“Fine,” Nesta grumbles. She clears her throat. “As you can see, I have made moves to reconnect with my sisters. I invited them here because I hoped that therapy would bring us closer and also make them more… tolerable.”
Elain coughs, “Bitch.”
Nesta smiles tightly. “Elain could especially use this, I think.”
Lana is already frowning. She never frowns this early into a session. “We’ll start with an easy question, then. What’s been on your mind lately, Nesta?”
Nesta purses her lips, pretending to think. “Nothing important. I’m looking at jobs for the summer. I think Azriel keeps sneaking money into my purse, and it’s starting to become more than a little condescending. I caught up with some friends from school, and I was polite enough to pay for lunch.” She mentions off to the side to Elain, “Lucien was there, too.”
“Why would I care?” Elain sneers. She spies Lana’s disapproving look and lowers her head demurely. “Sorry,” she murmurs.
“That’s alright,” Lana says. “Why don’t you go next?”
“Me?” Elain’s head snaps up, and Nesta holds in her snicker.
“Start by describing your relationship with Nesta. I heard you two used to be very close.” Lana uncaps her pen, preparing to write.
Elain flushes lightly and folds her hands. “That was when we were children. The only thing keeping us together was that we shared a home. When we stopped living in the same place, some of us had no problem leaving others in the dust.”
“You can use my name,” Nesta rolls her eyes, “I’m right here.”
From the corner of her vision, Feyre cringes.
“Are you saying you feel abandoned by Nesta?” Lana continues probing.
Elain’s answering silence tells more than enough. Therapy must actually be paying off, though, because Nesta only thinks about interrupting and defending herself for a second before shaking it off. Her mind focuses on the word abandonment instead.
Lana is focusing on the same thing, because she leans closer and says, “Being abandoned bothers you?”
“I never said that,” Elain says indignantly.
“It would bother most people.”
Nesta watches Elain sigh and blink her big doe eyes at Lana. She’s always been able to use those eyes on anybody for anything. “I just don’t understand why I’m the villain for expecting a little loyalty,” Elain says sweetly. “Especially when you take a look at this face.” She cups her round cheeks. “You know psychology. How could you abandon this face?”
Nesta’s jaw hangs open. “Are we still talking about me?” She remembers Cassian telling her the story behind Azriel ghosting Elain, and a pang of guilt and pity hits her. She still hasn’t talked with Elain about why Azriel left Velaris, and she knows she won’t be able to decide whether to spare Az or not until she does.
“So that’s my turn,” Elain finishes up. “Feyre can go next.”
Lana is writing something sharply on her notepad, but she nods coolly. “Feyre, how would you describe your relationship with your sisters?”
“Oh, we don’t have time for all of that,” Feyre laughs awkwardly and waves a hand.
Nesta agrees, but the look Lana gives Feyre tells her that yes, they do have time.
Gulping, Feyre glances around. “Well, I was born last, so I guess that made me the outsider of the family. I never had much in common with my sisters, but now that we’re older I… hoped that we would grow past that.”
Translation: she hoped that once she found her happy ending in Rhysand’s arms, poor little Nesta and Elain would happily assimilate into her new community of wealthy friends, putting the cherry on top of her perfect life. And while Elain did that exact thing, it’s always bothered Feyre that Nesta won’t do the same.
Feyre continues, “I admit I’m not the best at understanding Nesta. Elain and I get along fine now, but Nesta…” Feyre meets her eyes. “It’s like nothing we do is enough for her, but for some reason I can’t stop trying.”
“Whose fault is that?” Nesta mutters.
“You want her approval,” Lana hums, taking notes.
“Is that what it is?” Feyre looks away.
Nesta refrains from saying yes, that’s exactly what it is, and it’s not my problem if you keep looking for something I can’t give.
“What are your feelings about that, Nesta?” Lana turns her focus to her. “Remember that this is a safe space.”
It really isn’t, not with two siblings holding long term grudges against Nesta. But once and for all, she’s going to set the record straight. “I spent most of my life being a bad sister.” Nesta’s voice is apathetic, straightforward. “I let Feyre take the burden of providing for us even though I was the oldest, and I didn’t know how to be anything other than cruel to my family. So once I had the means to do so, I cut everyone off for all of our sakes. I still don’t regret it, because being a stranger is better than being a bad sister.”
In that way, Nesta is a bit like her mother. Nesta was angry after her death, but she knows she would have been even angrier if Magdalene Archeron had lived and continued to be a disappointing parent. In that way, both of them are wise for leaving their families when they did.
“Or you could just be a good sister,” Elain interrupts with a drawl.
Nesta smirks bitterly at her. “I’d rather die.”
Feyre takes in a breath. “Why? Why are you like that with us?” She blinks furiously, and Nesta can see the simmer of her emotions. “It was okay when we thought you hated everybody, but you don’t. You only hate me and Elain.”
Nesta looks to Lana for help, but her therapist is sitting this one out. She sighs through her nose. “I don’t hate you,” she says, even though they might never understand. The next line comes with great difficulty. “I’ve loved you since before I even knew what love was. But I don’t like you very much, Feyre, and you don’t like me, either. Please stop trying to change that.”
When she finally meets Feyre’s eyes, though, they’re glimmering with tears. “How can I stop trying to change that?” Feyre whispers. “How can I give up on us like that?”
For Nesta to give Feyre and Elain the relationship they want from her would require nothing but lies on her part. And as much as she wishes she was capable of lying about this, she can’t do it.
Looking away and down at her hands, Nesta mutters, “It’s not fun for me either, but it’s how I am. I can’t be easy or friendly with you. I hate watching you try to make me be easy or friendly.”
Nobody says anything to that, but when Nesta looks up again Lana gives her a remote nod that Feyre and Elain don’t catch. Thank you for your vulnerability, it says.
“You said something interesting, Nesta,” Lana breaks the silence. “Did you see your sisters as your responsibility to raise?”
Nesta shrugs. “I was the oldest,” she repeats.
“Your father was the oldest.”
“He wouldn’t do shit even if you held a gun to his head, so I was up next.” Though Nesta hadn’t done shit either. Neither had Elain, but the rules have always been different for her. Elain redeems herself to others by handing out sunny smiles and pretending to have the intelligence of a fawn.
Lana stares at Nesta until Nesta’s skin starts to heat. “What?” she says defensively.
Ignoring the other two women in the room, Lana leans forward. “You told me once early into our relationship that part of the reason you left Tennessee was to get away from your sisters. You said you were heartbroken when they ended up following you here.”
Nesta doesn’t breathe or look to see her sisters’ reactions.
“Now I’m going to ask: did you really want to get away from your sisters, or did you want to escape the feeling of failing them?”
Nesta doesn’t know how to answer, because to her they might as well be the same thing. Having Feyre and Elain around is like having a weight tied to her chest. The lingering guilt every time Feyre is in a room, her existence screaming I’m the reason you’re still alive. Elain’s constant expectations of unconditional support and loyalty, whether it’s reciprocated or not. It’s all so heavy. And it all goes back to the fact that the three of them were once just helpless children.
If she couldn’t take care of her sisters, how is she supposed to take care of any child, ever?
Nesta releases a weary sigh. “You’re going to bring this up the next time we have the baby talk, aren’t you?”
Lana’s eyes sparkle. “Don’t get ahead of yourself just yet.” But Nesta can see from where she sits that her therapist’s notepad is covered in bullet points.

“I need to use the bathroom.” Feyre is hopping back and forth on her feet once the session is over. “You guys head down to the parking lot without me.” She exits in a rush, leaving the two sisters alone. Nesta hisses in frustration, nearly chasing after Feyre so she won’t have to face the inevitable awkward conversation with Elain.
By the end of the session, it was Elain that broke and pleaded with Nesta, “Don’t do everything we want, then. Just keep doing better, the way you’ve already been doing. I’ll be happy with just that.”
Nesta was surprised that Elain had even noticed her efforts, but she retorted, “And how do you plan to do better?”
To which Elain twirled her hair and murmured something halfheartedly about, “I might be more open to taking criticism or whatever.”
Though it was the absolute bare minimum, it was still a relief for Nesta to hear Elain admit that she has flaws worth criticizing.
Now, Nesta clutches the straps of her purse and turns for the stairwell leading to the parking lot. Elain follows without comment.
Inside the stairwell, Nesta asks, “Have you spoken to Azriel since he left Velaris?”
Elain looks surprised at the sudden question, and doesn’t remember to be guarded when she answers, “No. Why?”
Nesta shrugs, her heels thumping loudly on the linoleum stairs. “Because I know what happened between you two. I know why he left.”
Elain halts midstep, grabbing Nesta’s arm and turning to face her with wide eyes. “What do you mean, you know? He told you?”
“He told Cassian, and Cassian told me.” Nesta hardly cares that she’s being a poor friend to Azriel by spilling all this to Elain, and continues, “If I had known he was such a coward, I would have kicked him out of our place a long time ago… but I figured I would get your input on it first.”
She’s never seen Elain look so genuinely pleading before. “Get my input on what?” Elain breathes. “What did he say about me? Was it something I did?”
At that torn face that borders on heartbroken, Nesta decides that she’ll do more than kick Azriel out of the cabin. She’ll kick him off the whole mountain.
She shoves Elain’s back to get Elain detached from her and moving down the stairs again, and as they walk, Nesta spills everything she knows. She tells Elain about Rhysand’s talent of shoving his nose into places it doesn’t belong, and how one conversation with him managed to convince Azriel to ditch Elain for good. She tells her about how instead of having a straightforward conversation with Elain, Azriel chose to leave the city and hide out in the mountains like a pussy. She might sound blunt, but Elain needs blunt. She needs to know the unfiltered truth of things.
By the time they reach the floor where their cars are parked, Elain is silent. “Did he really say that?” she finally asks quietly. “He said he wants me to hate him?”
“That’s what I heard.” After a moment, Nesta feels the need to add, “You should hate him, though. He fucked up bad.”
When Elain continues strolling for their cars without replying, concern bites at Nesta. “You are mad at him, right? And mad at Rhysand? You’re not going to forgive them, right?”
“I’m not a total pushover,” Elain snaps. She stares at the cement ground as they walk. “I’m just… more disappointed than anything else. He gave up so easily.” She chuckles without humor. “It sounds like he was looking for an excuse to get away from me.”
Nesta frowns. “I don’t think he would’ve spent so long moping around our house if he wanted to leave you.” Though they can never truly know what Azriel was thinking or feeling until he grows a pair and talks to Elain. Still, she shudders at having to defend him.
“I take it he doesn’t mope anymore?” Elain says.
Nesta doesn’t know how to answer that truthfully. She knows there’s more to Azriel than he lets her and Cassian see, and she knows he’s gotten better at keeping his feelings to himself. So she says, “It looks like he’s doing better, but I really don’t know.” They reach Elain’s car.
“Were you in love with him?” Nesta suddenly asks. Or worse, is she still in love with him?
Elain digs around for her keys in her purse. “You know how I am. Of course I was.”
“Not anymore, though?”
Elain looks up, keys now in hand. “It’s hard to still feel love for someone I haven’t talked to in two months.”
Then it wasn’t real love. Nesta is relieved, even though it doesn’t change the fact that Elain is hurting either way.
Elain jabs her keys at Nesta and says sharply, “Don’t you dare punish him for what he did. That’s for me to decide on.”
Nesta’s brow creases in refusal. “I’ll do what I need to do, and you do you.” She’ll have to be careful with her plotting, though, considering Azriel is Cassian’s brother.
“No.” Elain surprises Nesta with the force in her tone. “He’s your roommate and your friend. Keep treating him like it.”
Elain makes it sound easier than it is, and Nesta wants to argue until she sees Feyre heading down the parking lot toward them. “Fine,” she grumbles halfheartedly.
Elain gives her one final long look, not of threat but something else. “Thank you—for inviting us today.” That’s all she says before getting in the driver’s seat of her little red car. At the same time, Feyre catches up to them.
“Where are you parked?” Feyre pants as she approaches Nesta. She sounds a bit out of breath, like she ran to get here before Nesta could drive off alone.
Nesta points down the lot to where her scrappy old car is waiting for her, and Feyre straightens up with a grim smile. “I’ll walk you.”
Nesta knows that arguing isn’t worth it, so she allows Feyre to trail her the rest of the way to her car. Once they reach the old thing, Nesta gives a curt goodbye and heads straight for the driver’s door. Before she can touch the handle, Feyre attacks her from behind with a hug.
“Get off me, freak!” Nesta tries to jostle her way out of Feyre’s arms. She tries being nice to her sisters one time and this is what she gets—
Feyre only squeezes her tighter. “You don’t have to hug back. Just let me love you my way.”
Nesta squirms for another second before stilling. Swallowing tightly, she stares at the reflection of herself and Feyre in the car door window. One of her hands goes to where Feyre’s hands are clasped around her stomach, and she stands there without moving. She can’t remember the last time she shared affection with a family member like this, but it must have been before their mother died.
The warmth at Nesta’s back doesn’t leave, like Feyre is trying to pour all her understanding into the hug. Silently saying, I’m finally starting to get it.
In a way, Nesta is starting to get it, too. After all, how do sisters with such a complicated history begin to forgive each other?
Not by apologizing, but by doing better in the future.
***
On her way home, Nesta remembers at the last minute to stop by Gwyn’s apartment to pick up one of her sweaters. She doesn’t know when Gwyn started raiding her closet like it was a free mall, but she has a school event next week and doesn’t plan on letting her nicest clothes rot at Gwyn’s forever.
Nesta enters using the key beneath the doormat, knowing Gwyn is at work and won’t mind her stopping by. She scans the living and dining areas for a glimpse of brown cashmere, but only finds scattered books and a disorganized mess. Her fingers twitch with the urge to stop and tidy up the place, but she continues hunting for the sweater. Gwyn promised it would be waiting in plain sight for her.
Realizing the scatter-brained girl probably forgot to put the sweater out for her, Nesta pauses in the hallway leading to Gwyn’s bedroom and bites her lip. She doesn’t know if bedrooms are off limits or not, considering how often Gwyn and Emerie have barged into hers, but she knows she doesn’t want to make a second trip here just for a sweater.
Without giving it further thought, she strides into Gwyn’s room—
And yelps to find Gwyn on the bed.
Except she isn’t alone, and there’s definitely another body under the dark green blanket with her, and whoever it is definitely has their head between her legs.
Nesta spins away at the same time she hears Gwyn’s cry of surprise. She braces one hand against the doorjamb and presses the other to her freezing cold face, not having any words for what she just saw.
“Nesta?” Gwyn calls from behind her. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“Um, have you seen my sweater? It’s the expensive one.” She’ll just grab it and leave. Or maybe she’ll just leave—yes, that sounds like a good idea.
“Nesta?” a new, deeper voice repeats.
Gwyn hisses, and Nesta freezes because she recognizes that voice. She wants to be wrong so badly, but she has to whirl back around to confirm for herself.
“Azriel?”

ACOTAR women as mothers
Nesta:
-She's super chill but will go ape shit when necessary.
-Is always there for her children, even if it's a stupid rant.
-Constantly talks about how hot their dad (Cassian) is.
-Whenever she hears that someone has made fun of her child, she's the first to start an argument with the child's parents.
-She's very open with her Sex life 😭 ("So, me and your dad did this thing once...")
Tumblr media
Feyre:
-Her whole world is her children.
-She can be really sweet and understanding but can also be the "bad cop" (Because Rhys will let their children get away with everything.)
-Always wants to hangout.
-Teaches her children how to paint.
Tumblr media
Gwyn:
-She's the super hyper mom.
-Loves play fighting with her kids, and watching Azriel play fight with them too.
-As they get older and actually fight, she's always there cheering them on. Like shouting and screaming. Their kids always get embarrassed but Gwyn ignores them and plants kisses on their foreheads ("I'm so proud of you.")
-She loves when her kids sleep in her bed.
"Gwyneth."
"Yes, darling."
"Why are there another person in our bed."
-She loves it so much that as their family expands, she convinces Azriel to get a bigger bed so that they can all fit.
Tumblr media
Elain:
-She's the most affectionate mom.
-Constantly giving hugs and kisses.
-Likes to have one on one time with each of her children.
-Teaches them different flower meanings and the conditions in which are best to grow them
Tumblr media
Morrigan:
-She's the "cool" mom out of herself and Emerie.
-She teaches her children how to look and act your best, whether that's teaching makeup tricks or how to overtake a man.
-Loves to sing/dance with her children.
-Jokingly makes fun of her kids and claims she's the coolest person in their household (other than her "darling, beautiful Carynthian soldier").
Tumblr media
Emerie:
-She's a very calm mom. Even when she's angry, she doesn't shout, but she will put her kids straight when they say/do something wrong.
-She loves cuddles, just making sure that her kids are fulfilled with enough love. (Love that neither she nor Mor got as children.)
-She loves talking about everything. Anything. She loves being able to know her children so well, so much so that she knows all their likes and dislikes.
(i couldn't find a GIF for her so don't hate me 😭)
Tumblr media
Bonus:
Amren:
-If she ever had children, she'd have one. A girl. Varian would be ever so pleased but she'd be really nervous.
-She'd struggle trying to show emotions.
-She'd watch her friends with such envy that they can do openly express their love. All the while thinking her own resents her for not being able to do that.
-One day she just blurts it, a quick yet clear, "I love you."
-She'd just gape at her child as they stare at her. "I've never really shown it, but i do."
-From then on, she'd try to show her child as much as possible.
-Teaching them the history of fae.
-Even just sitting down trying to talk about her child's life, their love life, no matter how dreadful it is.
-But the smile on her child's face would make it all worth it.

The Bat Boys and their mates reactions to finding out they’re pregnant
I was inspired to do this by @genya-berdara
Feysand:
Rhysand scents it first thing in the morning and can’t stop smiling. He strokes Feyre’s hair, patiently waiting for her to wake up and silently reminding himself that everything is going to be okay. He has to keep a clear head and stay calm for her (because just after a few minutes of knowing he’s already thinking of every way he can make this easier).
Feyre wakes up and sees Rhysand smiling at her (which isn’t unusual) but his eyes are wet. She assumes he’s had a nightmare but then he softly breaks the news and she runs through a myriad of emotions - happy, frightened, worried, then overjoyed.
Just like Rhysand, she’s reminding herself to keep a clear head and not worry because it’s not good for her or the baby. But just like Rhysand, she’s excited to see their family grow.
While Rhysand is more protective of Feyre as a whole in public, at home he spends a lot of time touching her bump absentmindedly. Reading reports with her on the couch, having dinner together, but mostly when they spoon. Feyre on the other hand is always touching her stomach, usually subconsciously.
Altogether, they are glad to share this experience without being in peril this time around and enjoy every moment.
Nessian:
Of all the Bat Boys Cassian has spent the most time thinking about having a family (though he is in no rush to start one).
Nesta misses her cycle but says nothing, because maybe it’s just late and she would hate to get his hopes up. But then Cassian visits her in the private library after returning home from a mission and scents it and he gasps so loud it gets her attention.
She immediately knows what’s happened and just says “Really?” and Cassian can’t stop laughing and nodding his head.
Nesta immediately starts crying. He hugs her for five minutes straight, rubbing her back and promising that he’s gonna make this so easy on her.
Cassian adores Nesta’s bump and is constantly touching it and announcing how big the baby is to anyone who will listen. Nesta pretends it annoys her, but secretly his obsession with her stomach is a relief. She worries that he feels more “shackled” than ever, and his affectionate pats, strokes, and rubs reminds her that these are shackles that he’s glad to be in.
Also, Nesta secretly enjoys all the attention and happiness of their family. Cassian knows it though.
Bonus: Cassian loves to call the baby different awful names to make Nesta laugh.
Cassian: How is Hogarth today?
Nesta: 😑😏
Gwynriel (I have the most thoughts):
When Gwyn asks Azriel how he feels about starting a family the guy is immediately at attention. Patient strategist that he is, the Shadowsinger has been taking notes for nearly two decades during his time as “Everyone’s Favorite Uncle.” He’s paid attention to every complaint about pregnancy and the corresponding remedy. He’s memorized every cure to a cry when he was babysitting. He. Is. Prepared.
Gwyn is about to explain when they will have the highest chances of conceiving but Azriel already knows how her cycle factors into the odds.
Azriel is returning from a mission when he finds Gwyn in the training ring, sparring with Cassian. He can scent she is pregnant, but it’s so early that only he as her mate can tell, there’s no way Cassian could know. Azriel’s instincts take over and when his brother goes to sweep Gwyn’s legs out from under her, the shadowsinger barrels into Cassian full force knocking him out of the ring.
Gwyn is about to reprimand Azriel for stepping in but when she looks at him, he is crying and pulling her into his arms, apologizing into her hair. She’s confused and so is Cassian but finally, Azriel pulls away and tells her she’s pregnant. Cassian offers his congratulations and strongly advises to retire to their quarters... 😏
Where Rhysand is protective and Cassian is proud, Azriel is attentive as hell.
“Your feet? Lay down, we’ll elevate them, I’ll give you a massage and get circulation going.”
“Your back? You should sit, I got this pillow especially for your lower back.”
“Nauseas? I bought a ginger tea. Wait here.”
“Tired? I’ll finish the paperwork, you go to bed.”
“You’re anxious? I’ll tell everyone we won’t make it to dinner.”
He is a firm believer that she’s doing entirely enough carrying their child and he will make this as easy as possible for her.
Early on, Gwyn notices that Azriel is way too worried. Azriel notices that Gwyn is too stubborn to ask for help. They strike a good balance around month five of Gwyn knowing when to ask for help and Azriel knowing when to offer.
Also, Azriel sings to her bump every night, talks to it constantly and is a big believer in belly kisses.

“Id suggest you merely agree, tuck in those bat wings, and ask nicely.” 🌌
I uh. I don’t have a good explanation for this one other than if youve read the extended scene. Because Cass definitely eyes certain bodily parts during that scene and I certainly had to add that. 🙈 ft. His siphon sheild around Nesta because I really wanted to add it somehow.
(Above is the Instagram descript, aka I have family there and probably shouldnt be like Yo Cassian is hard core staring at her breasts in that scene and I thought why the hell not it will be hilarious? Hes an animal? I ship them so HARD.)
ANYWAYS. 😅 I want to fix her hair? It looks weird to me but oh well. I’m not sure who is next actually. Everyone wants more but we will see who the next victim of my drawings is soon! I hope everyone has enjoyed the first set of the series! ❤
You’re all still welcome to make character suggestions if you would like! Just submit/inbox me!

“So,” Nesta holds up a hand, “the thought of doing it with Azriel doesn’t scare you? Not even a little?”
Gwyn scoffs. “If I didn’t know him from elementary school, then it probably would. Unfortunately, I’ve firsthand seen the guy put crayons up his nose.” She casts a glance toward the bedroom door and lowers her voice. “And I honestly don’t have any proof that he doesn’t still do it.”

I really like to imagine Cassian and Nesta as the foodie couple, but not in the pretentious sense, but in the way that they will go to every restaurant known to man. They will travel to visit off-the-walls, mom-and-pops, food stalls that are known only by word of mouth. They know every place in Velaris, have tried every food. Typically they will order many different plates and share them. Otherwise they will maybe just go to the restaurant a few times and try something new each way. But both of them will get different things and they will always try each others. Both of them can eat a lot. Nesta eats so much (mostly because I’m tired of that rhetoric of women not packing it away). Nesta eats and she loves food. Cassian eats and loves food. They however just don’t always care for cooking it, and they’re such fast foodies, delivery, restaurant people. It’s the experience for them. A combination of curiosity, adventure, and sharing things with each other in maybe a smaller, more every-day sort of sense. They are definitely the people that if they travel they have a set list of restaurants/foods they want to try.
I like imagining them going out late at night and walking through the city and just stopping at stalls where there are fruit cups and tacos and various things on sticks, and fried food. Of course, Cassian is like we should eat healthy, and Nesta is like this crepe has fruit in it. But he’s resigned to the fact that he will never eat well again. But boy is he eating well and so is Nesta, and they just have a grand old time talking to each other between plates of good smelling food, and going over their days and every little meaningless thing that happened to them while they were away, and just topics of interests. Great food and conversations. Love that for them.
