Why do you think Toriyama cut Videl’s beautiful pigtailed hair?
Because the pixie cut is better Okay, okay, I’ll answer this one seriously.
Everything I’ve ever heard about Akira Toriyama suggests that he doesn’t plan stuff out terribly far in advance, except for maybe big, important plot points. That said, I remember hearing once that he originally intended the final battle on Namek to be Super Saiyan Goku vs. Vegeta, and he only built up Frieza as a way to keep Vegeta around when he got popular.
So I don’t think he always planned for Videl to cut her hair. It was probably an off-the-cuff decision he made once he had the two of them alone in Gohan’s backyard. As she leaves, Gohan suggests that she cut her hair…
And she blushes, thinking he’s commenting on her appearance in a romantic way. In the dub, she asks him if he likes girls with short hair.
And then he gets all flustered and tries to backpedal, saying that he’s only suggesting it for purely practical reasons. Long hair is a liability in a fight, since it can get in your eyes, and your opponent can grab hold of it. This makes Videl extremely upset, which is probably what Gohan was trying to avoid here, and she flies off in a huff. But then…
The very next day, Videl shows up with short hair.
I love the body language in this shot. Goten doesn’t particularly care, but Gohan is clearly astonished because he never dreamed that she would actually go through with this, especially not after she got so sore at him. I feel like he only brought it up at all because he felt that monster in his chest, to borrow an overheated phrase from Harry Potter, and he saw he getting ready to leave and felt like he had to say something. And Videl was probably blushing because she was hoping he’d say something, and she didn’t care too much what it was, but then he fumbled, and she felt embarrassed for getting so excited over it.
But Videl’s walking out in this shot like she’s wearing some sexy evening gown. She’s trying to act like this is completely irrelevant, practically daring someone to mention her new look, so she can fire back with “Oh? I thought you didn’t care, Gohan-kun.” Or she can say that she only cut it because she wanted to heed his sound tactical advice for the tournament. She’s trying to provoke him, and it’s working.
I’m going to explain “Engagement Chicken”, because I haven’t heard much about it in recent years, so maybe some of you may not know what it is. Basically, this roast chicken recipe was popularized by Glamour magazine, and it earned a reputation for causing boyfriends to propose shortly after their girlfriends serve it to them. I read an article about it once because I was trying to understand the appeal, and it quoted a guy who ate Engagement Chicken once, and he explained that whn a woman makes an elaborate dish like that, you stop thinking about her as a girlfriend and start thinking about her like a wife. So I took from this that it’s not anything magical about the food or the presentation, but the gesture itself. From what I gather, it’s not that hard to make, but it looks very impressive, mostly because it’s a whole bird, and it sort of looks like the kind of meal a cartoon king might eat.
Remember, the whole reason Videl was at Gohan’s house to hear him talk about her hair was because she found out his secret identity and blackmailed him into teaching her how to fly. She basically went out of her way to learn his secrets, even discovering that he was the son of former Tenkaichi Budokai champion Son Goku. Gohan felt inconvenienced and cornered at the time, but I’d like to think that he was flattered on some level. No one had ever gone this far out of their way to get to know him. But I love Videl’s body language here too. She’s leaning against that locker, arms crossed, as if to say “Yeah, that’s right, I own your ass.”
But then you get to this moment, and Gohan’s like “Oh, gosh. Uh… I guess I own your, uh, behind, Videl. If that’s okay, I guess.” And she’s like “Aw crap, he’s right.”
And through the next episode, she began to open up to him a little more, and by the day of the tournament they were practically carrying on like a steady couple. Gohan doesn’t quite get it, but he likes it.
Anyway, that’s why I like Videl’s short-hair look better. Not so much because it looks better, or because I have a thing for girls with short hair, but because of what it represents for the character. She’s so infatuated with Gohan that she went and did something impulsive like this just to express it, and everyone can see it, even if Gohan’s the only one who knows what it means. It’s like Engagement Chicken, only this is a “We-Own-Each-Other’s-Asses” Haircut.
I suppose if it could have gone the other way, I would have liked the pigtails better, but you can’t grow hair out as fast as you can cut it. I suppose this is part of the appeal of short hair on women, because long hair is considered the norm, so there’s this implication of something bold and drastic in wearing it short. If your girlfriend cooks an entire chicken and/or lops off most of her hair, you know something’s on her mind, and you sort of hope that it’s you.

And atelier is a small, independent design studio founded in 2010 by João Araújo and Rita Huet currently based in Porto, Portugal. Their work always tries to accomplish a strong conceptual approach, through very clean solutions and with a strong typographic component and respect for letterforms and reading rhythms.
