Reflection Eje 5 y 6
This time I could have a better understanding of tones and their functions, and how the same sentences reading with different tones can change the meaning. I know I have to keep working on my production of tones and sounds. I enjoyed learning about this topic and finally get it. I feel more confident about how to explain each element in a tone unit than in other years before. I think the portfolio helped me a lot, and it is hard work to do it, but it is worth it. I learned a lot this year.

Example from "Harry Potter and the Order of the Fenix"
First, a little context about this scene:
Dolores Umbridge is part of the Ministry of Magic, and they believe that Harry and Dumbledore (The HeadMaster of Hogwarts) are conspiring against them to pull the actual Minister of Magic down (Cornelius Fudge) spreading the news that the most dangerous dark wizard of all time has returned. The Ministry want to disbelieve Harry and Dumbledore, which is why they took control of the School placing Dolores as the Headmistress.
Harry had a vision of his godfather (Sirius Black- also called Padfoot) being tortured by Voldermort himself. Because of this, he wants to make sure that he is okay, checking if he is in the Order (an army to fight against Voldermort and his followers). However, the problem is all means of communication are under surveillance, so they need to enter Umbridge's office because it is the only one that is not being guarded.

I've chosen the following tone units:
/ Snape / yes / The time has come / for answers / whether he wants to give them to me or not. / Have you BROUGHT the veritaSErum? /
/ r+ Snape / r+ Yes /
Umbridge is using the R + tone because she is taking control of the conversation, she wants to keep on talking. She doesn't want to be interrupted because there is more to come. This is a case of Discourse Control 1. Also, she is the Headmistress and Superior to Snape (The Potion Teacher) so this is an asymmetrical encounter.
/ r+ Have you BROUGHT the VERITASERUM/
In this case, Umbridge is using the R+ tone because she is demanding an answer from Snape. This is a case of Discourse Control 2, a question for the benefit of the Speaker. Snape is in a position to answer Umbridge's question and she is in a position to demand an answer for her own benefit because she is sure that Harry knows about where Dumbledore is and he is trying to communicate with him. So she asked Snape for a Potion, which will make Harry tell the truth even if he doesn´t want to.

Example from "The Sex Lives of College Girls"
youtube
First a little context about this scene:
Kimberly and Leighton are roommates at the University of Essex. Leighton has a secret about her sexuality that no one knows, not even her family or friends. She was dating a girl for a couple of months, but their relationship ended because Leighton was too scared to come out in public.
I’ve chosen the following tone units:
/ p go AWAY please/
Leighton uses a proclaiming in this part to show separateness. Because she wants to sound distant and doesn´t want to talk about what happened with no one. The meaning would be: "leave me alone, I don't want to talk".
/ r Are you CRYNG/
Kimberly uses the referring tone in this part because she has an assumption about what Leighton is doing but she wants to make sure of that. Also, this tone has a social meaning: the sense of togetherness to try to come closer to Leighton and help her with whatever she is going through.
/ p I'm GAY/
Leighton uses a Proclaiming tone this time because this information is freshly introduced to the conversation. As I've mentioned before, no one knows about this. So the area of convergence has been enlarged in this interaction.
/ r I'm really PROUD of you/
Kimberly uses the referring tone in this part to show togetherness with Leighton. It is a really big step for Leighton because no one knows about it, so Kimberly is really supportive, and encourages her to be herself.

Reflection Eje 4:
In this eje, I think the material was too complex, but I think I got the most significant parts in my summary. I realize that this is a crucial topic for improving our understanding of how language works when we talk. However, I had trouble applying the theory in my example. Regarding the audios, I still believe I need to improve my pronunciation and work on that.

Example from "Brooklyn 99"

First a little context about this scene:
Jake and Amy are the principal characters of this series. Jake finally wins the bet he had with Amy to catch more criminals. Amy has to accept the invitation because she lost the bet.
I've chosen the following tone units:
1.
/I SPENT one whole dollar on this RING/
SPENT: It is prominent because it is selective from the existential paradigm as opposed to getting the ring from someone else. ( I mean it's not borrowed).
RING: It is prominent because it is selective from the existential paradigm as opposed to another thing he would buy for her. (flowers, chocolates, etc).
and:
2.
/you HAVE to say YES/
HAVE: It is prominent because it is selective from an existential paradigm as opposed to not having any obligation to do it.
YES: It is prominent but it is non-selective, so the idea or concept is already in play, that is to say, we know that she has to accept because she lost the bet. Amy has no option but to say yes to him. Jake is exploiting the system to make fun of her and annoy her even more.
