Out today: Once & Future #1
Tumblr media
My third and final new book of the year is released.
Once & Future is the story of a retired Monster Hunter who drags her entirely unknowing grandchild into her line of work when a bunch of British Ultra nationalists try and awake an ancient Arthurian Evil.
I like to mix up what I do, as I get bored easily. I like the work I do to be i) born of my obsessions while ii) feeding from a completely different part of me. If I do two books that scratch the same itch, I get bored. I suspect you would too.
DIE is the weird, hyper-detailed, painful, messy work. Peter Cannon was the formalist, experimental fuck-me-I-love-comics art-for-art’s sake work. Once & Future is the smart pop thrill work.
It wouldn’t work without Dan Mora, who is an fantastic action/horror artist who never loses track of the characters’ charms. I often think of comic artists in terms of who they are as actors, and everyone Dan draws is the equivalent of a box office draw. I just want to hang around with these people. Tamra Bonvillain is a colourist with huge taste and imagination, choosing her palettes to either sell the normality or the weirdness.
Orders have been fantastic, so hopefully you should have no trouble finding a copy. I think you’ll enjoy this a lot. Writing Bridgette and Duncan is just a joy.
You can buy from your local shop or, Comixology. There’s some preview pages here and a trailer here.
Oh - and I’m signing at Forbidden Planet London today at 6pm. See some folks there.

Hi Neil! Yet another “yes thank you this is good” Good Omens comment that comes with a question. GO is one of the most faithful book adaptations I’ve ever seen (and I love it for that), so I’m kind of curious: where did the body swap right at the end come from? I LOVE it, and it feels like a very natural conclusion thematically, but unless there was a book rewrite I missed, it’s all new material. Is this a posthumous gift to us from Sir Terry? (GNU.)
No, that was all me. We needed a plot that would keep people watching to the very end, after all.

Relating to crowley and aziraphale being written as a love story in the tv show - does it necessarily have to be interpreted as a romantic one? Because I too noticed their relationship being much more in the focus of the show than the book and LOVED IT but - probably since I'm asexual myself - perceived it to be a fascinating and deep friendship/platonic love. How do you feel about that?
Absolutely fine.
I wrote the relationship in the TV show, as David and Michael and Douglas and I have been cheerfully explaining to people for a long time now, as a love story, between an angel (mostly male-presenting but at one point sharing a female body) and a demon (mostly male-presenting except when he’s a nanny).
I have, for the last thirty years, believed firmly that anything anybody wants to bring to their Aziraphale and Crowley (and Anathema and Newt and Beelzebub etc) headcanon is good with me (dating back to the days before Ineffable Husbands and Air Conditioning, to the distant past when people told me they were writing Crowley and Aziraphale Slash). That’s the joy of fanfiction, the joy of fandom, the joy of headcanons. It makes me disappointed when people feel that I’m being mean by not endorsing their particular headcanon as the Only Truth, but as far as I’m concerned, what’s on the page or on the screen is the Only Truth, and anything imagined beyond that is headcanon, so at best I’d just be telling you what I (half a book author, whole TV series author) happen to think.
Does that help?

I loved seeing all of the attention to detail in good omens and I was curious about something. In demonic infestations its common for flies to swarm around the house/room/item thats infested, and I remember there being a demon in the show (not sure if they were named or not) that was constantly swarmed by flies. Was this intentional?
Well, that’s Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies. (Not to be confused with Dagon, Lord of the Files.)

‘The Chicago school era many scholars and social reformers studied immigrant or ethnic youth ‘gangs’ with the intent of solving urban social problems.’ (Haenfler, 2014: 140); Hanelore Dumitrache on the pages of UAL magazine in collaboration with Knight Frank asks a question: ‘How can meanwhile use spaces in regeneration become a tool to avoid migrant destitution?’ The article is talking about ‘integrating migrant workers from Romania into the local community and give them the opportunity to gain a more permanent status, especially in the light of Brexit.’ (UAL, March 2018)
