Yesterday marked 12 years since senior killer whale trainer Dawn Brancheau was tragically killed in an accident involving the orca Tilikum. In the time since, Dawn’s death has been continually exploited to perpetuate a cause she never would have supported. Working with SeaWorld’s killer whales was her childhood dream, and she spent over a decade as an orca trainer, playing a large role in creating SeaWorld’s famous Believe Shamu show and inspiring others to care for the whales as much as she did. Dawn’s family has stated: “Dawn Brancheau believed in the ethical treatment of animals. Dawn followed her dreams and became a marine animal trainer. She loved the whales and was proud of her work as a trainer. Dawn thrived on introducing the whales to the audience and educating them about the animals in her care. Dawn would not have remained a trainer at SeaWorld for 15 years if she felt that the whales were not well cared for… Our family always supported Dawn and we continue to support Dawn’s friends and co-workers who currently care for the animals she so loved.
Whether or not you “stand with SeaWorld,” using Dawn’s passing to frame orcas in human care as crazed killers or tortured victims is extremely disrepectful to her memory. The upcoming drama series Death at SeaWorld intends to recreate Dawn’s death on screen, supposedly in her “honor,” to further an agenda she would be firmly in opposition to. Instead, I think a better way to remember her would be to visit the Dawn Brancheau Foundation and considering donating to a cause she cared about.

Makaracetus, the "trunked whale", a basal cetacean that had a bizarre skull indicating some kind of weird nose. My interpretation took inspiration from desmans, aquatic moles.
