read my full review of welcome home, caroline kline by courtney preiss here.
A debut novel sparkling with wit and insight about a young woman whose reluctant return to her Jersey Shore hometown gives her the second chance she didnā€™t know she needed.
Caroline Kline isnā€™t ready to strike out.
In New York City, newly single Caroline is stumbling her way through the recent implosion of her life. After a surprise breakup leaves her with no job, no apartment, and no backup plan, sheā€™s unsure of what to do next. That is, until Carolineā€™s father Leo injures himself in a bad fall and asks her to move home to the Jersey Shore suburb sheā€™d always been desperate to escape. But Leo doesnā€™t want his daughter to be his caretaker; he needs her to replace him as third baseman in his local menā€™s softball league. This isnā€™t just any season, Leo claims. This is the year they have a real shot at the World Series, the pride and joy of Glen Brook, New Jersey.
Caroline agrees to move home, concerned that Leo is hiding a more serious health condition than heā€™s willing to admit. As the first female player in a league full of old-school men, sheā€™s up against more than a few challenges. And when a night gone wrong lands her in the path of her hometown crushā€”and first loveā€”Caroline struggles to reconcile the life she thought sheā€™d have with the life she might actually want.
Sharply observed and full of humor and heart,Ā Welcome Home, Caroline KlineĀ is a touching tribute to the many unconventional paths that victory, and recovery, can take.
my review:
Considering I have no real interest in most sports, Iā€™m not sure why the summary of this book called to me. Yet, Iā€™m so glad I picked it up because I ended up really enjoying it, sports scenes and all.Ā Welcome Home, Caroline KlineĀ details a womanā€™s journey to get her life together as she returns home after a bad break-up to play on her dadā€™s softball team.
After a surprise break-up from the boyfriend whom she was meant to move cross-country with,Ā Caroline KlineĀ doesnā€™t really know what to do with her life. When her dadĀ LeoĀ calls after suffering from a serious injury, she begrudgingly returns home to visit him. However, he has ulterior motives even then: he needs her to fill in for him in their suburbā€™s softball league. Heā€™s convinced that this is the year his team will win, and after a lot of thinking (and remembering how few prospects she has in the city), Caroline agrees. As she plays and is shut out by the leagueā€™s men, she rediscovers what it means to be a part of a community, especially after running into her former crush and first love,Ā Crispin.
The writing definitely pulled me in from the very beginning.Ā Carolineā€™s voice shines off the page; I couldnā€™t put this book down!Ā This is Courtney Preissā€™s debut and Iā€™m definitely very excited to read more from her in the future.

read my full review of sound the gong by joan he here.
FromĀ New York TimesĀ and Indie bestselling author Joan He, comes the dazzling and sweeping conclusion to The Kingdom of Three duology,Ā Sound the Gong, the breathtaking sequel to the critically-acclaimedĀ Strike the Zither.
All her life, Zephyr has tried to rise above her humble origins as a no-name orphan. Now she is a god in a warriorā€™s body, and never has she felt more powerless. Her lordess Xin Ren holds the Westlands, but her position is tenuous. In the north, the empress remains under Miasmaā€™s thumb. In the south, the alliance with Cicada is in pieces.
Fate also seems to have a different winner in mind for the three kingdoms, but Zephyr has no intentions of respecting it. She will pay any price to see Ren succeedā€”and she will make her enemies pay, especially one dark-haired, dark-eyed Crow. What sheā€™ll do when she finds out the truthā€”that he worked for the South all alongā€¦
my review:
After adoringĀ Strike the Zither, Iā€™ve been eagerly anticipating the sequel. I was so nervous to start it though; I got an ARC months and months ago, but I knew Joan was going to break my heart like she always does.Ā Sound the GongĀ certainly pulls no punches and leaves you stunned by the ending.
This review contains spoilers for book one,Ā Strike the Zither.
Still in Lotusā€™s body,Ā ZephyrĀ continues to scheme in secret from her place alongsideĀ Ren. Sheā€™s still facingĀ MiasmaĀ as a threat and reeling from the betrayal ofĀ CicadaĀ andĀ Crow. But for all her plots, can she really go against destiny and the will of the gods?
I knew that the original idea was to just have one, long standalone book, and I think you can certainly tell that it was split in half here. This book picks up pretty immediately after the first bookā€™s ending, but thankfully the author has writtenĀ a recap, if youā€™re like me and donā€™t have time to reread the first book.Ā This was extremely helpful although I do kinda wish I had rereadĀ Strike the ZitherĀ anyways just because it wouldā€™ve immersed me in the world more.
