utilitarians have failed to consider replacing all stairways with dirt slopes dotted with trees to grab onto and dry rocks to get a footing on. yes inside the house
Oh hey, do you know what time it is? It is highly specific resource time!
Today we have the Royal School of Needlework Stitch Bank! There are HUNDREDS of stitch types in the RSN Stitch Bank.
And more added regularly, let’s look at a recent addition
I picked the first one in the 25 recently added Elizabethan stitches, the Elizabethan French Stitch
The stitch bank provides written and photo tutorials as well as a video option to learn to do it yourself. There are examples of the stitch in use, resources, references, everything but a needle and thread!
Thought to be extinct since the 18th century, 5 Gray Whales have been discovered alive and well
also this cool funny bird is doing alright too
2 million pounds of plastics and trash removed from the ocean by one nonprofit
Tidal power being used to power 1 million homes, largest tidal power project yet
and as a bonus thousands of 3D scans of animals have been published, which is very cool for anatomy artists and will increase the number of skeleton drawings in the world which is nice
Good news, fellow artists! Nightshade has finally been released by the UChicago team! If you aren't aware of what Nightshade is, it's a tool that helps poison AI datasets so that the model "sees" something different from what an image actually depicts. It's the same team that released Glaze, which helps protect art against style mimicry (aka those finetuned models that try to rip off a specific artist).
As they show in their paper, even a hundred poisoned concepts make a huge difference.
(Reminder that glazing your art is more important than nighshading it, as they mention in their tweets above, so when you're uploading your art, try to glaze it at the very least.)
HUGE quaker oats recall in the US, affecting dozens of different products
quaker oats is recalling dozens of types of quaker bars and cereals due to salmonella contamination with various best before dates in 2024 and all earlier dates. <- YIKES!!! this was not just one or two batches! this has been going on for a while!
check the FDA link to look for the whole list of products but it is long. this is a colossal recall.
this recall is so big that quaker oats has a website dedicated to it. check out the website to get reimbursed.
today my wisdom is: the ecological crisis of our planet is not a thing that will Suddenly destroy us sometime in the next century—it has taken decades of continuous work for our biosphere to be preserved thus far, and it will take decades more of continuous work to continue preserving it.
The apocalypse is not a single event hovering in the future bearing down on us while we sit helplessly. We are at least 150 years into an ongoing "apocalypse."
Things will continue to steadily get worse without steady action, but "augh! it's already too late to stop climate change and mass extinctions!" is specifically the worst response
