Is there a skill you’ve always wanted to master someday, but kept procrastinating on? A language you started learning – then abandoned? A topic in class you’ve never quite grasped? Or maybe you just want to expand your horizon and try something new? Distract yourself from your usual studies?
This challenge is the perfect opportunity to achieve that! Pick a skill and see how much you can improve and grow in 30 days – or really start working on your to-read list (I know those books have been piling up), your portfolio for that dream job in Illustration you want, or your blog you’ve been meaning to post more original content on.
Self-growth and development are so, so important, which is the main reason why I created this challenge.
The idea of this challenge is that people from all communities come together to gain knowledge, add skills and just have fun with the amazing amount of resources out there. This way, we can all support and motivate each other, whatever field you might be interested in.
Post an introduction with the hashtag #30dol with your goals and expectations for the month (starting June 1st), and what your current level is. (Of course, you can join in later as well, but it’s fun to start a the same time!) In the end, you’ll be able to compare and see how much has changed!
Rules:
choose a topic or field you want to concentrate on
post an introduction to #30dol
define your goals or aspirations
update daily or weekly, we want to hear from you! ♥
post a picture, a sketch, or audio, whatever you deem fitting to show us all your progress for the day/week
Here are some ideas for you:
bullet journaling (read about it here on @emmastudies, here’s an amazing online course on it)
books/reading (if you don’t have a personal to-read list, here is one with the best books of the 20th century, best series with a gay plot/subplot, and books everyone should have read at least once)
coding (here are some sites to learn html, css, data science, python 3, java, etc.: x x x x)
design/illustration ( stickers and illustration, character illustration, Ink Illustration, 45 best adobe illustrator tutorials,
business/freelance/open your own shop (tips on how to open your own sticker shop, digital skills: web analytics and marketing)
languages (apps like lingodeer, duolingo, lingvist, busuu, blogs like @lovelybluepanda. there are also so many pdfs and amazing websites out there depending on your target language!)
online mass education courses (edx, coursera, skillshare, futurelearn where universities and professionals teach you about their subject - be that astronomy, engineering, ancient greek history, artificial intelligence or medicine!)
social media (learn to take iphone photos for your tumblr or instagram, and here’s a great post by @studyquill on how to start and maintain a studyblr!)
photography (travel street photography, find photographers you admire like annie leibovitz or henri cartier bresson and read about their path, or browse youtube channels like negative feedback which specialize on photography)
creative writing (there are tons of workshops online - you could also try to set yourself a piece or word limit similar to nanowrimo)
culinary (check recipe websites, or challenge yourself to try one new recipe a day, or dedicate the month to a specific cuisine)
music (learn music production, andrew huang has also made a video on how to start making music here)
film and filmmaking (karsten runquist’s channel is wonderful for film analysis,  learn about cinematography basics here and film history here)
painting (acrylic painting, sketchbook illustration. you could challenge yourself to fill an entire sketchbook/create a piece every day or week, or to improve a specific technique)
Every resource linked is free (if you click on the links you can get Skillshare for free for two months and cancel anytime), so all you need is some free time and lots of motivation!!
I’m very happy to be announcing this to you all, and will be working on my Japanese for this challenge – so excited to see what you all and I will do and how far we can come!
Use #30dol as the general tag, and add your field (your specific subject, or writing, painting, lang(uages), pho(tography), film, book, design) to find people doing something similar! Though honestly one of the things I’m most excited about is the multidisciplinary aspect - we are such a brilliant and colorful community :)
Have fun guys!!

A guide to be at the top of your class in law school (Pt. 1 : what to do during the semester)
I’ve had so many question about how to prepare for law school and how to study law and get great grades so here you go!
Disclaimer : I go to law school in Paris, France so my advice may not be appropriate to law school in all countries! Feel free to try what seems useful for you and to leave out the rest.
I really do believe that if you follow these advice you’ll be in the top of your class. These are all things I wish I knew earlier because figuring out law school AND trying to ace law school at the same time is so tiring. All these tips really worked for me and this is what I do everyday to try and get the best grades possible so hopefully they will be useful to you.
YES it does take a lot of work to do very well in law school and there is no shortcut. You need to be willing to put in the work if you want to succeed. These tips are no miracle solutions to work less, just tips to work better and more efficiently than everyone else in your class, thus making you one of the top students.
1. Prepare your tutorials classes thoroughly
Tutorial classes must be your number 1 priority. I mean it. There is nothing more important than your tutorial classes (« TD » in French). This means that you must spend as much time as necessary to prepare them. Do the assigned reading, make summaries, write the assigned essays, etc.
I can’t stress this enough. Tutorials are the only classes where you’ll be in smaller groups, able to ask questions to a tutor. You will also be training for the exams so being able to participate actively will make a huge difference in your grade. Tutorial classes are the most difficult part of law school in France and a lot of other students will try to make themselves invisible in the back of the classroom. This is soooo tempting when you haven’t prepared enough because you are just so afraid to be asked questions by your tutor. Been there, done that. Biggest mistake ever.
Oh and did I mention that the grades you will get during those classes will be a significant part of your final grade ? So working very hard for you tutorials means 2 things : you are way more prepared for the exam + you already have good grades that count towards your final grade.
2. How to behave during your tutorial classes
Tutorial classes will often be something like 4:30 hours a week. There are the 4:30 hours a week when you can’t make any excuses. Even if you are very shy, or if you really lack self-confidence, or if you are very lazy, these are the 4:30 hours a week when you can’t show it.
NEVER miss a tutorial. Again, there are the most helpful class you will have + you tutor gets to grade you. There are so few grades in law school that any good grade you get will make a huge difference.
if you absolutely cannot go to a tutorial, make sure to email your tutor. Apologize and ask him if he’s giving another tutorial to another group at another time in the week. If not, ask if any other tutor do. If he doesn’t know, ask around to try and find another tutorial to go to.
sit upfront. No excuses. Have all your material ready in front of you.
try to make it your goal to answer every single one questions your tutor ask. You must get your tutor to notice you. Believe me, you’ll get a better grade for it. Also chances are that you will never be picked randomly to answer a question that you don’t know the answer of. Do not be scared to look pretentious or to look like a know it all. Don’t be afraid to look smart, because you are smart. You’re here to succeed, so act like it.
ask your tutor every single one questions you’ve asked yourself about what the professor said during the lectures or about the assigned reading / exercices. Also, if your question if a bit of topic or needs a very long and detailed answer, just wait the end of the class to ask it. It’s just super annoying when someone goes of topic during a tutorial because once again tutorials are the perfect place to understand everything about the subject and ace your exams. Remember you need to act smart, prepared and efficient. Not cocky or selfish.
take as many notes as you can. Don’t be afraid to ask you tutor to slow down or repeat something.
be nice and friendly to everyone in your class.
3. How to prepare for your tutorials
You can apply these tips to any class you have to prepare really. I know in some countries you have to prepare for your lectures but again I go to law school in France and tutorial classes are the one which you need to spend the most time preparing for.
So you’ll probably have 3 tutorial classes a week. The time you need to spend to prepare them will of course depend on the professor, the tutor, the subject, the exercices given each week, etc. I’d say that spending 3 hours on each tutorial is the minimum amount of time. Of course, if you have essays to hand in that will be graded by the tutor, 6-7 hours are a minimum. It can go up to 10-15 hours of preparation for more complex subjects or if a lot of reading is required.
You need to aim at the perfect grade, the A*, the 20/20. You have all the time you want, all the books you need, the internet, friends, a tutor that you can email, etc. You’re just so much more likely to get good grades in tutorial classes than at the final exam. So get those good grades.
Use the online database (Lexis, Dalloz, etc). Work in the library to use all the books on the subject. I guarantee that the other students will be to lazy to do so or won’t even know that these sources exist during their first year. If you’re lost, ask someone at your library to explain it all to you.
To prepare a tutorial I will :
read the notes I took during the lecture and complete them with books. Add the legal definitions, explanations on things you don’t understand, some examples that you like, some diagrams if they help you, etc.
do the assigned reading to prepare for the tutorial and make small summaries. You won’t have time to read through these materials again for the final exam.
do the exercices. At that time I will make lots of research on the only database to make sure I don’t leave out anything.
make sure that I will be able to answer the tutor’s questions quickly. Have all your legal definitions ready as they will likely ask what those terms mean and who looked them up. Be able to talk about the texts you read (but if you wrote small summaries it should be easy).
4. What about lectures ?
Given all the time you need to spend on your tutorials, don’t be too hard on yourself when it comes to lectures. Just showing up, being focused, and taking note that are as detailed as possible is enough.
For your main subjects, you will re-read, correct and complete your notes when preparing for your tutorials. AFTER the tutorial, when you’ve asked all your questions, make summaries of your notes. Usually I use the structure of the lecture and add everything important I learned during my preparation and during the tutorial.
For the other subjects, those with no tutorials and only final exams, just make sure you have good notes at the end of the semester. To be honest, I often don’t have time to go to all those lectures so I usually have a arrangement with friends I trust and who take good notes. We share the lectures and our notes so we don’t have to go all the time. To be honest you will just have to cram before the exam as those subject are often just stuff you have to learn by heart. No need to spend your precious time revising those during the semester.

RE-PROGRAMMING YOUR MINDSET FOR SUCCESS
Tumblr media
I feel like I have to share my pathway towards success with you because I spent all my life considering success as the very end of the journey when in reality you can have it all along the way. And I think that understanding this is fundamental, not only for your studies but also for your everyday life.
I’ll start by showing you a little example. During my long stay in Cartagena I had the occasion to do a few salsa dance lessons with some of my friends (yeah cliché I know) and as I was listening to the salsa teacher I kept telling myself that I was too rigid and not coordinated at all and that I’d look terrible dancing.
When we had to practice the moves I couldn’t keep up with the rhythm and honestly, I was a mess. The teacher even came to me to tell me that I was thinking too much about the moves!!
In that very moment, I thought: “ok Margot, now think you’re a latina goddess, you’re sexy and you’re a born-to-be a dancer”. As soon as I started telling this to myself, my moves completely improved. They got so much better that I was the only one in the group who was able to perform all the moves correctly on the first try.
What I want to tell you with this story is : you won’t go anywhere as long as you keep a negative mindset. The second you switch your mindset and you turn it into something positive, a little miracle happen. Just as me being able to perform good dance moves (and trust me that this one is really a true miracle :)
Now, I know it’s easy to say but I really want you to understand this because it’ll change your life like it changed mine : whatever you think about, you become.
The minute you start filling your brain with useless thoughts like “I’m not enough of this”, “I wish I had this”, “I wish I looked like that”, “I’m too fat to wear that”, “I have no self-control”, “I’m bad at maths”, etc. well guess what : you’ll still be bad at maths, you’ll stay sad and in months from now you’ll be stuck in the same place.
Here are some bits of advice about what you should be doing instead. Notice that this post is inspired by Gabrielle Bernstein’s book “The Universe has your Back” and also by other inspiring video’s I watched in the past few months :)
Focus on your goal and imagine how you’re gonna achieve it, how you’re gonna feel and how proud you will be. Make it as clear as possible. Write it down in your journal if you want. Visualize every single detail. If your goal isn’t clear, it’s ok! You can still think about how you can improve your life or how you can work on just loving yourself more. And don’t be afraid to think big.
Practice positive affirmations. This one will be hard in the beginning because we all are used to focus on the things we don’t have, or the habits we want to get rid of, but we never pay attention to what we already have or why we really want success. Instead of thinking “I want to stop biting my nails so I won’t be ashamed of them” think “I’ll be so proud of myself if I stop biting my nails and I’ll feel more confident!”. Trust me, it makes ALL the difference.
Practice gratitude. You have no idea about the positive impact it has. If you struggle with this, try to make a list of at least 5 things you are grateful for every night before going to bed. Write it in a journal or just think about it for a moment. There’s no “wrong” way to practice gratitude. You can be grateful for the pizza you had today, or your cat. It just has to be positive.
Get some inspiration. Read a new book or look for some videos that inspire you. Get closer to people you admire. Inspiration is so important because it allows you to get a better view of what you want to become. I really started changing my mindset the first time I read “You Are a Badass” by Jen Sincero. It has been so eye-opening to me that I started practicing more and more positive actions ! I also found TED Talks to be really helpful for me!!
Judge less. I know, we’re all humans. We all judge and it’s totally normal to do so. However, we can modify our judgment towards a lot of situations : whenever you notice yourself judging something or someone, take a step back and think why you are doing so, it’ll help you to see clearer and you’ll let more space for love. You don’t know what’s behind the people you’re judging and it doesn’t help you to reach your goal. Use this energy to work on yourself instead.
Stop comparing yourself. Don’t stop because you think you’ll never be enough. You don’t know what the others are going through, you don’t even know what they are thinking. I remember in my first med school year that I was constantly focusing on what the others were doing and comparing it to what I was working on instead. I spent so much energy doing so instead of studying that it made me fail my exams. And you know what the funniest part is? That the people I valued better than me failed their exams too. This definitely changed my vision! The next year I only focused on myself and on my own study methods and I passed all my exams :)
Start where you are and celebrate small victories : you’ve been feeling like crap and all you did was taking a shower? It’s fine. You took care of yourself. Be happy about it. Be grateful to be able to do so. Don’t wait for the right moment to start something because the truth is that there’s no right moment and that you’ll never really be ready. Success is more about the journey than the destination. Always remember that.
Stay true to yourself. Don’t seek perfection but start loving every part of yourself instead. Don’t apologize for being authentic because it will allow you to understand what truly matters to you in every situation. Being your own self will also help you focus on your goal and not letting distractions around. You’ll gain confidence as you’ll know what works best for you and you’ll be able to let go of negative things in your life.
Also, don’t apologize for your success and your abundance. You are worth it. You’ve always been.
I hope these tips will help you to reach your goals! You deserve to be happy and successful!

let’s face it: sometimes, there are a ton of things we’d rather do instead of studying. and sometimes, it’s so so easy to succumb to these distractions because… !?!?!? for this next addition to the #studyingwithacdemic masterpost series, here are my personal tips for distraction-free studying.
i’ve always had this super bad habit of leaving things last minute because i… have zero self control. i end up being distracted by tumblr, youtube, online shopping, searching up random things, who even knows?! but recently, i’ve been teaching myself to get better at studying with nO dISTrACTioNS.
i know, it sounds like a distant, far-off dream.
but here we go!
clean up your space. it’s super important to make sure your study space is clutter-free. you don’t have to be super neat, and it doesn’t have to be spotless, but you need to be able to find your stuff and think clearly. whenever i’m feeling super off, i’ll organize my desk a little bit and it’s honestly so refreshing to study at a clean desk!!
kILL YOUR DISTRACTIONS. this is what i do when i realize i am so far down the procrastination pit. do whatever it takes to get rid of whatever has been distracting you. literally leave no options for yourself but to study. here are some ways you can do this: - turn off yo wifi. unless your assignment requires wifi, the best way to get rid of your online distractions is to simply turn off your wifi! i swear, this one saves the day when i’m “writing” essays. - get an app. self control is my savior. if you don’t have a mac, cold turkey seems to be the popular one for windows users. - move. sometimes, if you’re working in your room, it’s just too easy to take a nap or procrastinate. move to a place where someone else can see you and keep tabs on you. “mom, can you please nag me??” - if your distraction is a person.. yeah, don’t kill them. just politely ask them to stop-doing-the-distracting-thing and if they don’t stop, you may have to move. or get them to move.
time yourself. look at the time. tell yourself: “5 minutes from now i will have finished at least two of these math problems.” and in 5 minutes, if you’re still procrastinating, do pushups or something as punishment. use short spurts like this to keep an eye on yourself!!
take breaks. you’ll burn out easily if you just sit down for eight hours and study. take frequent (every half hour, or every hour) breaks to stretch, drink water, take a breather, and if you didn’t get enough sleep you can even take power naps. this keeps you focused on your task because you know that there’s a break coming up aS LONG AS YOU JUST. DO. IT! - i know it’s been said before but.. during your break i definitely recommend exercising. exercise is so, so good for you and totally clears up your head. there’s no need to do a super intense crossfit/hiit workout or anything, but i like to do jumping jacks, high knees, wallsit, burpees, pushups, plank, stretching, tuck jumps, and/or yoga.
ask for help. this seems out of place, i know, but i think one of the main reasons i end up distracted is because i’m just confused about what i’m learning - and i don’t want to try and figure it out. if you find yourself getting stuck, instead of chilling out on youtube (“i’ll watch one video. just one. seriously.”), ask for help!!! you can search it up, of course, but i think asking a real person will make sure you actually get the job done.
lighting is important. especially in the night. if you’re studying and it’s dark, and it’s nighttime, and you’re tired and bored, you’re going to think a nap time is in order. not only will lighting affect your sleepiness, it’s also bad for your eyes to study for a longgg time in dim lighting. try to keep your study space bright, cheery, and encouraging!!
set up a plan. setting up a strict (you can make it as strict as you want. if you want to be super specific and have things scheduled to the minute, go for it!!) study schedule will definitely keep you in check. if you’re just doing whatever, whenever, there’s a huge chance you’ll end up doing nothing.
say no to tech. if you can, just try to close your computer and phone and go without them. i can’t avoid tech when i’m studying since i do online school, but a lot of you can totally just use your handy textbook and notes.
don’t give yourself other stuff to do. aka: no multitasking. focus. on. one. thing. at. a. time. i’m sometimes super scrambled up and i’ll try and do my math homework, english essay, and history flashcards simultaneously. if you’ve done this before you’ll know it’s nOT productive, and even more time-consuming than just tackling them all separately.  - this doesn’t just mean “don’t study a ton of topics all at once”, i mean, dOn’T MulTitASk at all. if you’ve got a study snack, or a good book, or anything like that nearby.. just avoid it for now. you can enjoy it later, when everything you need to do is done.
priorities are your friend!! set up a chart with your priorities. (i have one in my printable collection) do the tasks according to your priorities. that way, even if you do end up distracted, you’ll have gotten the important things done before the less important things. (my non-eloquence here is cringeworthy. let’s play a game called “how many times can hannah say thing or things or thingy in one masterpost?”)
sometimes you’re better off alone. i know this sounds like a breakup tip. whoops. what i mean is, although studying with friends or classmates is often suggested (and it’s great, it really is!!) sometimes that’s not the way to go. esPECIALLY if you’re studying with a friend. that snowball can roll down the distraction hill veeery quickly.
enjoy it!! studying is fun! if you actually enjoy what you’re doing, you won’t even be distracted in the first place. love school, love learning, love what you’re doing! ♡
allllrighty, that is it for my distraction-free studying tips!!
i hope that was helpful and if you have any questions, want to talk, want to yell at me for a bad masterpost, want to chat about your day, have any suggestions for future #studyingwithacdemic masterposts, want to request a future masterpost etc. etc. just drop me an ask and i’ll answer asap to the best of my abilities! <3
thanks for reading and have a lovely day, xoxo hannah

hey guys, here are some pictures of today’s morning study session. this year (for my degree in chinese studies) we haven’t done much written chinese, we focused ourselves more on chinese history, literature, oral and classic chinese, that’s why I’ve decided to study it on my own during my holidays! I’m planning to study 2 lessons every day (text, vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing and listening). so far, I’m doing an amazing job, I learnt 85 words today! I’m now going to read a chinese contemporary mini-story using my book “graded chinese reader 500 words” ☕ have a nice productive day!

ode to a “B” student
You are worthy
You are smart
You are just as valuable of a student
You have the capacity to grow
Your worth is not encapsulated in a grade
You are allowed to love something and not be perfect at it
You have time
Take care to not compare yourself with those above and below you
Your future is not indicative of the place you’re in right now
You will end up at a college that is just right for you
YOU HAVE THE CAPACITY TO FACILTATE A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE WITHIN YOU
