Canadian artist David Burdeny is the first photographer to document the beautiful Russian underground train station network after hours.. Burdeny has travelled into the pristine bowels of Moscow and St Petersburg to capture the exotic and grandeur architecture in his photography series called Russia: A Bright Future.
Each of the images in the series take center stage, they are symmetrical ornaments. The architecture of these stations are extravagant; it feature elements found in churches and palaces. The stations had been built in the 30s and remain a lasting monument to the elegant union of modern and classical design.
Burdeny has explored the concept of “svet” (light) and “sveltloe budushchee” (a bright future) as a source of inspiration for this series. Known as an “artificial metro sun”, these luxurious floors, opulent ceilings and gilded walls pay tribute to the history of Russia in the glory of the Stalin era.
