SO, I graduated this past weekend with my BFA in Theatre. I've got some feelings about it.
I am blessed beyond comprehension to have had the support and resources to realize this dream, and I owe a debt of gratitude to the amazing people in my life who made it possible. It’s not a privilege everyone has. When the road has been bumpy, I’ve been comforted by the memory of a five-year-old in a pumpkin costume asking when she could be in a play again, or a twelve-year-old at summer camp realizing that she was willing to put in the work, or a fourteen year old marching into a board meeting with blind confidence. She would think I’m the absolute coolest, and I am proud to have made her dreams come true.
The training at UIUC has prepared me well for the work of a theatre artist, but it’s also been more than just job training. I am leaving college with a more holistic and balanced approach to my work than I’ve ever had. In high school I saw myself as a theatre artist first, teenager second. Thank god I ended up at Illinois Theatre, where my dear professors taught me I am enough, my humanity is enough, my experiences are enough, and my unique and somewhat-skewed viewpoint is actually what the work NEEDS, perfection be damned!!! I’ve come to believe an actor who spends all his time acting is kind of a jackass, and probably a bad actor. Now, instead of prioritizing being a theatre artist first, I am trying to learn how to be a better person/friend/student/neighbor... which in turn makes me a better theatre artist.
Theatre is an opportunity for us to practice life; being present, active citizens of the world. We get to practice “being” in the theatre: being kinder, being brasher, being bolder, or being vulnerable. Anything you can imagine and everything beyond your wildest dreams. I believe artists hold the universe’s best-kept secret: when we listen and engage with each other, we create magic. Artists have the courage to create moments of play, absurdity, discovery, and truth that push the boundaries of what we previously thought possible. If an artist can create a turning point, a new energy, in a single evening, who’s to say we can’t create a new world altogether? I feel so especially lucky to be a student of the theatre now, when there’s a million distractions available at all times and it’s so so easy to shut down and shut the world out. I’m guilty of it - and theatre makes me put it all down and focus on what’s in front of me.
Being a working artist isn’t easy and the road ahead is bumpy. Who knows, maybe I’ll never book again. The point is that whatever I do, I bring this training with me, onstage and off. Theatre has taught me to engage with empathy and curiosity, and my world is bigger because of it.

"Alex George grew up on the local stage. We first saw her as an idealistic young girl when she was only a kid performing in "And the Tide Shall Cover the Earth." Flash forward five years, and George is now in college and has grown both more mature as a person and as a performer, to the point where playing a mom struggling to raise two kids after suffering through some horrific life events is not only not beyond her range, but seems so effortless to her. Ruth is tough and tender, vulnerable and — when the right buttons are pushed — venomous. It is a marvel watching George work. " - Chris Harris, Commonwealth Journal.

Nice to meet you, I’m Alex George!
I’m a determined theatre artist proudly hailing from the bluegrass hills of Kentucky, ready to take the world by storm. My passions include learning, dirt, loud music, and above all else, the theatre. I firmly believe the theatre is a space to experience a life less ordinary; where artists push the bounds of reality to create the magic that reshapes our world. My work is that of an explorer, and I attack every project with voracious curiosity, attention to detail, eccentric humor, and whole-hearted hope.
