I actually started this piece a while ago, when the news that Ubisoft were pushing NFT’s into their games, onto their player base and into the hands of their unwilling employees was actually current news. But when it was finished a lot of other things took over the news and it felt wrong to address something as petty as NFT nonsense when bigger, more pressing matters were taking centre stage.
But I worked so hard on this piece I still wanted to share it, and Ubisoft are still desperately trying to make Non Fungible Tokens a part of their major game series’ so the message remains current.
Personally I cannot think of anything as antithetical to the Rayman universe as NFT’s. Rife with unoriginality and theft, fuelled completely by greed AND damaging to the environment? It hurts my heart to think that a series which inspired so much of my creative growth could be associated in any way with NFT culture. I can’t dictate how Ubisoft will choose to proceed with implementing NFT’s into their games but know that if they try and make it happen with Rayman it will be a sign that the company has forgotten what made their character special…and that will be a sad day.
But whatever happens I will not give up on the character that has brought joy to my life for this long, and introduced me to so many wonderful people. And I hope we fans can all agree that NFT’s would not be welcome in the Glade of Dreams!
Imagine if you had a neighbour who keeps performing songs from Phantom of the Opera in his apartment every night, by himself but accompanied by a parrot, which he has taught to sing Christine's part. Admittedly it's kind of obnoxious but you are far too baffled to even be properly annoyed. And also you don't want to confront someone with that kind of power and determination. So every once in a while you just hear this guy dramatically bellow
