scducers:
balancing precariously on the edge of the sink, legs swinging in time with the faint hum of music, danielle inhaled deeply, drawing the toxins into her lungs and remarking how disturbing it was that they made her feel clean. perhaps it wasn’t the habit so much as the place then, a corner tucked away from the rest of the world, self-imposed isolation where she had a moment to sort through her thoughts and find some sense of meaning.
harder, it must be noted, with half a dozen champagnes in your system.
primed to be irritated by this interruption, all her anger dissipated when she caught sight of jude’s face, covered - as it was - in fake blood. suppressing a wicked smile, danielle inhaled deeper. this was fucking dangerous. she is dangerous. you are dangerous together.  dangerous because it made her want to live up to every rumour that had been fastened to her name, to knowingly break a perfectly good man’s heart.
still, danielle was made for love - and so her feeble attempt at an icy heart melted immediately. “thanks. you don’t clean up too badly yourself.” jude’s was far from the only compliment she’d received that night, but it meant the most. with a characteristic glint in her eye, dani laughed. “you tell me - is sitting in the ladies smoking a cigarette all alone a sign of a lacklustre, or fucking incredible night?”
Tumblr media
jude let out a small puff of laughter, peering curiously at danielle as she finished washing her hands, drying them on the non-bloody sides of her dress. “well, if you’re asking, i’d say that depends,” she replied, turning to lean back against the sink. “maybe it’d be lackluster if you were, in fact, smoking alone, but you’re in good company now.” jude grinned and reached a hand down the front of her dress, pulling out a slightly wrinkled and blood-spotted but still intact cigarette. she wasn’t much of a smoker in general, but liked to indulge occasionally when energy and champagne levels were high, such as tonight.
it hadn’t occurred to her when she first saw danielle by the sinks, but looking at her now, jude’s mind wandered back to the little piece of paper she’d found earlier in the evening-- a vague command dictating that she seek out a touch. well, that was easy enough, but the next part -- find it dead and floating in a pool -- had mystified her. until now.
she hadn’t paid much attention when the great gatsby was covered in high school, but jude still knew how it ended.
“hey, can i borrow your lighter?” she asked. and when she took it from the girl’s hand, her fingers brushed danielle’s so slightly, so innocuously, that she should’ve barely felt it at all. jude did feel it, though, felt the touch linger there and cause a little flipping sensation in the pit of her stomach. why was this vague fucking card trying to get her into trouble?

“Unfortunately, I’m a literature student, so I have to consume a lot of old-timey books. That means plenty of research, so I can in fact tell all these period costumes apart. I’ve been forced to spend too much time memorizing which shades of red pigment historically came from which type of crushed insect,” replied Devin. She pointed at the scarlet liquid cleaving to Jude’s form. “See that? You would have had to crush, like, hundreds of beetles to achieve that shade of red in such quantities.”
Her eyes remained on the blood. “You’re going as Carrie, right? Please don’t be alarmed, Ate, but looking at all that fake blood makes me hungry.” She laughed. “Because it reminds me of all those bottles of Hershey’s Strawberry Syrup I’d keep on begging you for!” Jude never failed to light up her Christmases and birthdays with all the Australian sweets she shipped off to Maasin. “What did you use for that fake blood?”
Tumblr media
“Oh Dev, you know how much I love it when you talk to me about crushed beetles and period-era dyeing practices,” Jude teased her, before moving a fake blood-covered arm toward Devin’s face to playfully threaten her with the sticky substance. But she didn’t make contact, of course, just laughed before looking back at Devin with a raised eyebrow.
“Ha, of course I remember, I never got why you liked that stuff so much. You know what, maybe I actually could’ve used strawberry syrup instead-- would’ve been less work for me, even though everyone here would be smelling that sickly sweet fruity smell when they came within six feet of me.” She grinned. “It’s actually corn syrup and red food dye. I tried using liquid soap at first, like you know the kind they put in public bathroom soap dispensers? But then it got in my eye, which was a whole disaster since, as you know, I’m a big baby. So... corn syrup stickiness instead. Although, now that I’m thinking about it, it’d probably suck just as much if this got in my eye too.”

There was an air about Jude that made Daniel feel warm in. They hadn’t really talked before, and it came as a surprise that she even knew his name. Their club was small albeit, but even so he was touched.
“I don’t think they do, at least, I hope not anyway.” the thought mortified him. “As for my costume? I probably should have thought better of it honestly, I wanted to be a clown originally. But feel free to try and guess.”
He took in her appearance, and for as much as he confused her with his costume choice, she too was an enigma. She wore what seemed to be a prom dress, or something similar to it, along with a corsage on her wrist. However, a red stain seeped in almost every fiber of her attire. What character commits murder at prom? He tried to think and could only come up with one answer:
“As for you someone from Twilight?”
Tumblr media
Jude laughed at that, a loud and unladylike sort of laugh that probably would’ve turned heads if they weren’t the only two people who had showed up to this stupid party on-time. She had to give Daniel credit, his guess was pretty fair despite the fact that he barely knew her-- coming to a literary ball dressed as a character from Twilight would’ve actually been quite on-brand for Jude.
“No, come on-- it’s Carrie, you know, Stephen King? But I’ll have to do Twilight for next year’s ball, I wonder if I could make myself sparkle like the vampires do in that, or maybe go as someone from the Volturi.”
She examined Daniel’s costume next, taking in the corduroy jacket and black t-shirt. Really, she had no idea, but Jude couldn’t say whether that was because of the plainness of the costume or her lack of familiarity with classic literary works.
“I’m guessing the guy from Animal Farm, maybe? This jacket’s giving me some farmer energy. But it looks like we’ve both stumped each other.”

where: observatory, ladies’ bathroom
when: closer to the end of the night
who: @scducers
the halloween ball had been going for quite some time now, and jude was properly buzzed. enough so that going to the bathroom was quite the ordeal, between her un-sober gracelessness and elaborate costume. sighing and sweaty beneath all the fake blood, jude flushed the toilet and exited the stall only to give a bit of a start at the sight of danielle by the sinks.
she’s got a boyfriend, she’s got a boyfriend, she’s got a boyfriend, you dumb slut. these were the thoughts often racing through jude’s mind whenever she and danielle spent time together, along with less helpful things like her smile could fucking kill me and oh god, please stand closer. there was this weird electricity with them, an electricity that shouldn’t be there but was getting harder and harder to ignore.
or maybe jude was just being silly.
“hey,” she greeted danielle, looking over while washing her hands. “how’s your night going? love the costume, by the way. you look... i mean, wow.”

farrowea:
where: the stairs of the observatory
when: a little bit after the event has started
who: open to all @harcourtstart
farrow leans over the railing of the spiral staircase, looking down at the ground with a frown on his face. squint as he may, he can’t even see the envelope that had flown out of his hand and down the stairs. he supposes it doesn’t matter now and truly, there was probably no need to even bring the invitation. he just hopes no one not in the society picks it up tomorrow and starts wondering about it. not that he cares, of course, but he just doesn’t want to be held accountable for anything later on.
“is it even worth it to go down there and pick it up?” he wonders, mostly to himself as he still hangs half over the edge of the railing, using one hand to push the hair from this horrendous wig he’s sporting out of his face.
Tumblr media
jude is just passing by when she sees the envelope fall from farrow’s hand, followed by the muttered remark said mostly to himself. she should definitely just learn to ignore him, but what the hell, it’s halloween. isn’t she allowed to have a little fun riling him up?
“nah, why bother making a janitor’s life a little easier when you can just litter instead?” she replies, leaning over the railing next to him. her tone is casually sarcastic, not exactly biting but still less-than-friendly. it definitely speaks to how much farrow annoys her that she didn’t just keep walking. “you know, as long as you’re having fun. what are you even dressed as, anyway? a founding father?”

“you know, i’ve never been to an actual party,” says devin. “just small celebrations arranged by my family or my classmates back then.” she purses her lips, restraining herself from specifying what she meant by back then, before her eyes water at the memories of the way her promising childhood waned into largely wasted, uneventful, miserable adolescence. this is not the time and place for that, though it’s the nature of trauma, often creeping up on her at the most inappropriate moments. happy ones. but focus on that, devin, she says to herself. this is a happy moment.
“this is nothing like i imagined my first party to be.” the sumptuous visuals surrounding the attendees are undoubtedly a far cry from the trashy suburban party she always pictured, but never personally experienced; despite this, if there are drinks, she remains too young to legally drink by rhode island law. it’s quite astonishing. she feels as if she’s already burned through a long, exhausting lifetime, but here she finds herself: still burdened with youth. and she’s sure that even when she grows past twenty-one, her youth won’t leave her yet. it feels so transitional. when, she wonders, will she become a real, fully fledged person? these, however, are not questions to be answered at a halloween party, no matter how sophisticated her company was.
“perhaps i’m underdressed.” she’s come as katniss everdeen, a dystopian ensemble that could hardly be more dissimilar from the other partygoers’, which matched the old-fashioned and gothic atmosphere. but she supposes that’s what makes her herself. in a land of monsters and magic, devin stays unrelentingly human. + @harcourtstart
Tumblr media
Jude knew this mood of Devin’s, had seen it in plenty of Skype calls and tinging the words of her texts and letters. And now that the two of them were at the same school and spending much more in-person face-to-face time together, it felt even more pronounced. Maybe later, once the party ended, they’d sit on Jude’s couch and unpack those sad and wistful feelings. While they were here, however, Jude’s self-appointed role was that of cheering Devin up.
“Are you kidding? I don’t even get half of these costumes, like, am I the only one who thinks all these period-type characters look exactly the same? How am I supposed to tell what sort of cultured references they’re making?” Jude laughed. “Besides, you look amazing. The Katniss who should’ve been. I’m starting to think I should’ve gone more simple too, the fake blood is actually really fucking sticky.”

where: at the bottom of the observatory outside.
when: right on time of the event starting
who: open to all @harcourtstart
Daniel had never celebrate halloween, never had been one to spend his money on a costume he would wear once in his lifetime. Such was the reason for his depressing garb. An overused black t-shirt and black corduroy jacket made his attire. How he had come into acquaintance with such dark fabric was beyond his comprehension, but still it suited the occasion.
The stranger. He was a stranger in many people’s eyes, just as much as he was strange. Perhaps he really should have come as the clown, McDonalds must have created a children’s book by now.
He stands at the bottom of the observatory, right on time for the event to start and silently berates himself for coming so early. Why hadn’t he learned? His hands idly wring the invitation until it becomes nothing more than a poor man’s attempt to create origami. Uneasiness makes a home on his face as he battles with the idea of going in. He wished someone would make the decision for him.
Tumblr media
Naturally, Jude had gotten the event time wrong, thinking it started at 7 instead of 8-- so when she showed up at 8pm to find herself one of the first people there, she was immediately confused. A quick check of the invitation solved her questions, and now Jude was faced with two options: go inside and experience what it’s like to be someone who shows up to parties on-time, or find something else to do for an hour. Well, the latter just felt silly.
“Waiting for a herald to announce your arrival?” Jude teased the guy standing by the entrance. “Hang on, that isn’t something that actually happens here, is it? I’m still new.” He looked nervous, probably the socially anxious type. Jude didn’t have much experience with that herself, but she was good enough at lightening the mood and making people feel a bit more comfortable.
“You’re... Daniel, right? I’m sorry to say I don’t get the costume reference. How about I get one guess before you enlighten me?”

looklikelightning:
open: @harcourtstart // the observatory // midway through the party
tw: alcohol
she felt warm, and maybe almost content, in a way, as she dropped her empty glass on a table, adjusting her violet baudelaire costume as she was walking through the room. it felt off putting, to be a little intoxicated and at a party after all this time. maybe she should leave? the loudness and the crowd of mostly strangers, the ornate decorations, it felt like too much, and she wasn’t sure how to feel about it. edi paused, eyes fixated on the exit as she debating her options.
this wasn’t her ideal situation, but she had come here, had made it this far into the night and she had promised herself she’d stay at least another hour still. so she set her sights at the bar, another drink at least helping pass the time. she walked with purpose, eyes locked on the bar as she moved, paying little attention to her surroundings. halfway to her destination, she bumped into someone, frustration coating her voice as she quietly snapped, “watch your step,” at them. “it’s too crowded here,” she muttered under her breath.
Tumblr media
Okay, maybe Jude had made a mistake with this costume. It was warm in the observatory, and the fake blood was super sticky against her skin-- but the unpleasantness was slightly muted by the fact that she was now nicely (but still appropriately) tipsy. Her strategy at this party, as it was at every party she attended, was to flit sociably around the room, not lingering too long in any one conversation or group of people. Jude always considered it a victory if she gained some kind of party anecdote with every person who attended, even something as simple as a funny conversation or a costume selfie.
She was on her way to check in with Julian on the other side of the room when someone bumped into her, making Jude stumble slightly in her heels (another downfall of the Carrie costume). “Whoops, sorry, you okay?” She’d seen the girl before in society events and around the engineering building, but Jude wasn’t sure they’d had the chance to be acquainted. “Did I get any blood on you? Don’t worry, it’s just corn syrup and food dye.”

gaia-gl:
Where: inside the observatory by the drinks table/bar. When: ~an hour into festivities. Who: open @harcourtstart
Gaia strode to the bar and helped herself to a drink, pouring a generous helping of whisky into a crystal tumbler. She remembered vague references to Holmes’ preferred beverages, whisky being one of the few. She might as well embody the part she was playing. The bar pressed into the small of her back as she leaned against it, watching the other partygoers with detached interest, observations fluttering into her mind like pigeons coming home to roost without much effort on her part. She noted an argument brewing, unseen doe eyes, and the beginnings of deep intoxication.
She felt rather than saw another person come to occupy the space at her side and glanced sidelong at them. “Find any ghouls in corners yet?” she asked. “Halloween balls are always more entertaining when monsters drop by.”
Tumblr media
After about two months as a member of the society, Jude wanted to think she was getting her bearings a bit, but a large part of that was thanks to Gaia. Jude drifted over to her now, taking a glass and helping herself to some champagne. There was definitely a part of her that wanted to get sloppy tonight, while another part wanted to prove that her admission into the society hadn’t been some weird fluke, that this was a space she deserve to occupy. So, Jude figured she’d settle instead for a solidly buzzed sort of champagne-happy vibe. A happy middle, if you will.
“And is that something you know from experience?” Jude raised an eyebrow at the mention of ghouls, grinning at the girl next to her. “It totally wouldn’t surprise me if there were spirits and stuff appearing at past Halloween balls. Maybe the ghosts of the authors coming to haunt us for our portrayals of their beloved characters.”

𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅𝒘𝒊𝒅𝒆 ;; 𝒋𝒖𝒅𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒏 !
aka page 24, the explorer. feel free to read her app here, and if not, see below for some key points!
Tumblr media
BASICS.
full name: jude alira sutton.
age / date of birth: 23 / december 1st, 1996.
gender / pronouns: cis woman / she&her.
year: first year graduate student.
program: m.s. in environmental engineering.
birth place: sydney, nsw, australia.
ethnicity: indigenous australian (cadigal, arrernte, kalkadoon), white.
zodiac: sagittarius sun, leo moon, libra rising.
orientation: bisexual.
BACKGROUND.
she was born & raised in sydney, the only child of michael & regina sutton. her mother worked as an international business consultant and traveled a lot, which caused a lot of tension in her parents’ marriage and eventually led to their divorce when jude was 10.
jude idolized her mother & loved going on travel adventures with her, even when her mom was working jude was so happy to roam around in a new, exciting place.
after the divorce, her mom moved to southern california and remarried, while jude remained based in sydney (but still went to visit her mom as often as possible).
jude made the decision to move in with her mom when she was 14 and do high school in the us. that was when she developed an interest in science and the environment, in addition to her passions for photography/art and travel.
then once it was time for college, she landed on imperial college in london, where she studied ecology and environmental biology.
during her undergrad years, she had a situationship with this girl that ended up kind of messing her up, and making her realize the way she just wanders through life and won’t stay rooted to one spot actually has a negative side and makes it hard for her to keep relationships.
(moment on the page alert!) so after she graduated, she decided to go home to australia and her dad-- but he had remarried and started a whole new family, and it didn’t feel like home to jude anymore. her mom, meanwhile, was getting a second divorce and partying around the caribbean so she wouldn’t have to face it. jude started to think she made a mistake in glamorizing her mom’s lifestyle, but at that point she’d sorta made her bed and she sure as hell didn’t want to stay in sydney anymore.
so she applied for grad schools just so she’d have a place to run next, and voila, here she is at harcourt!
her plan after getting her masters is to become an engineering consultant and continue traveling the world. and in the meantime, she’s working as a freelance photographer to help pay those grad school bills
jude’s a new recruit to the society, having only joined a couple months ago. on one hand she’s super fascinated and excited by it, but on the other she’s afraid bc this feels so much bigger than anything she’s ever been part of before. harcourt was just supposed to be a stop along the road before she moved on to something else, but the society already feels like it’s interrupting that plan.
PERSONALITY.
the ultimate true neutral-- how she’ll act depends entirely on the situation at hand and how she’s feeling at that time.
always down to try new things, though, which is how she ends up in chaotic scenarios a lot even tho she’s not inherently a chaotic person.
she’s not the most ~literary~ in the traditional sense, but she loves stories: collecting her own, and learning other peoples’. she also uses photography to tell stories.
chill, goofy, outgoing kind of personality. hates getting tangled up in drama of any kind. big fan of anything casual.
a collector of many things: polaroids, shells, cool rocks, maps, postcards. her space is just an absolute mess of crap she’s collected over the years, and she likes it that way.
she’s genuinely very friendly and a good listener, but not necessarily the most loyal or reliable (but she tries, especially with the people who are most important to her).
mbti: estp (the promoter). energetic, thrill-seeking, social, practical, playful, non-emotional.
enneagram: type 7 (the enthusiast). pleasure-seeking, future-oriented, restless, quick-thinking, multi-talented, creative, open-minded.
