JOYRYDE’s Album Sees Another Delay as Tomorrow’s “SELECTA” Release is Cancelled
JOYRYDE’s debut album BRAVE has already seen its fair share of pushbacks, with the project’s original release date slated to drop last November. Now, the HARD Records LP is seeing yet another delay, this time in the form of the record’s next single, “Selecta.” Originally set to drop tomorrow on Friday, according to JOYRYDE himself it’s being pushed back indefinitely because he “didn’t like the sound of a few parts in it.” See his entire message below.

Miami Music Week 2019 Was Everything You’d Dream Of It Being [REVIEW]
Miami Music Week was a grand success. Offering a variety of hectic pool parties, afterparties, and exclusive label showcases. It’s a giant culmination of everything that will transpire the coming year in electronic music. Kicking off the festival season in big fashion, we wanted to highlight some of the best parties you may or may not have missed out on in Miami Music Week this year.
Drumcode took over Club Space for an extensive party that lasted till 6pm the next day. Bringing in heavy hitters from their lucrative roster like ANNA, Dubfire, and Adam Beyer; techno enthusiasts were treated to a night they wouldn’t forget.
Brownies & Lemonade held their annual Miami Music Week party and this time they truly outdid themselves. Hosting the legendary return of Dog Blood, this stacked lineup brought a sold out crowd to Mana Wynwood for a night full of surprises.
SHAQ’s Fun House was the exclusive soiree that guests had hoped for. With only limited high-priced tickets being sold, the buck definitely proved itself worthy. The surprise lineup brought out DJs like Kaskade, Diplo, Armin Van Buuren, Oliver Heldens, and more.. surrounded by celebrities, open bars, carnival games, and food.. not sure what else you can expect from the Diesel himself. It was one of the most insane nights and those who were there to witness it unfold would say the same.
Dirtybird Players remained a highlight of the week. Partying till the morning to the sounds of groovy house music was well worth the energy spent. Attracting one of the best crowds, house enthusiasts gathered around Club Space in hopes of catching sets from Claude VonStroke, Justin Marin, Weiss, Shiba San, Walker & Royce, and more!
Virtual Self held his notorious 3-hour extended clubsystem show down in the Wynwood Area. What started off as a euphoric trip down the realms of trance and melodic house, turned ugly in an instant. It was good though, maybe not for the faint of heart but losing your mind to rigid drum and bass and hardstyle at 2-4am was probably the most intense sequence of Miami Music Week you could’ve experienced.
Elrow as a brand has been labeled as one of the best parties on the planet. After making the trek to their ‘El Bowsque Encantado’ spectacle, it’s really hard to combat that statement. Bringing legends like Patrick Topping, Claptone, Nathan Barato, and more, the festivities held inside were unforgettable. Elrow showed Miami a great time and that’s all that mattered.

Ultra Music Festival Finds The Perfect Home For Its 21st Edition [REVIEW]
What a year it was for Ultra Music Festival. After being hit with the heavy news that the Bayfront Park was no more, organizers scrambled to find a perfect new home for the spectacle. Familiarizing themselves with the stunning Virginia Key Beach, the venue was massive, overlooking the sea, and provided a generous facelift to the positive atmosphere all weekend. It was the perfect place to kick off a new era for Ultra. Celebrating its 21st edition, so much took place and we’re here to highlight some of the best moments of Ultra 2019.
youtube
The Chainsmokers surprised many with their performance to close out the festival. Contrary to the uplifting and catchy melodies you’ll hear on the radio, the duo went all out to premiere new collaborations with ILLENIUM, Crankdat, and more. The surprisingly aggressive set blew us away and really shined some light into what the future holds for one of electronic music’s biggest acts.
youtube
Arguably one of the most anticipated sets of the weekend. The reunion of Skrillex and Boys Noize truly lived up to the hype. Aside from bringing Ty Dolla $ign up to premiere new music, they flashed the crowd with a spur of unreleased bangers that only confirm Dog Blood is BACK. In an era where house music is at its best, the duo will certainly thrive in EDM’s current climate. We’re also just really happy to have Skrillex back.
youtube
So many expectations headed into the night for Alesso. What does the Swedish prodigy have left to prove? Finding himself once again in the headliner slot, the artist took fans on a trip down memory lane. Creating a perfect balance of new and old, the euphoria was at an all-time as many sung their hearts out to the classics put on display. Creating such a buzz on social media, it seemed as if those watching the livestream also found themselves in awe at the perfect set we all just witnessed thanks to Alesso.
youtube
Oliver Heldens got a major push from organizers as he rightfully earned his slot as a headliner on the main stage this year. Moving past his earlier set times, the producer took us into the afternoon and really put on a show. The array of grooves, basslines, and energy he left on that stage left more than just an impression. As he continues to climb the ladder, Oliver Heldens showed his worth this year.
youtube
With so much to take away from the weekend, we had Armin Van Buuren close out the ASOT stage with a whopping 4 hour set, Deadmau5 debut his Cube 3.0, Shaquille O’Neal joining the mosh pit during SLANDER & NGHTMRE‘s set, Adam Beyer stealing the show at Carl Cox‘s megastructure, and Cash Cash throwing a broken mixer off stage. It was an eventful 3 days to say the very least. With a giant crowd of 170k+ constantly in high spirits, the liveliness was contagious and further confirms Ultra 2019 a success.
Taking some hiccups here and there with energy outages, production failures, transportation issues, and a painful walk from the resistance island to the main festival grounds, there is a lot to take back and improve for next year. It is expected for a new festival grounds to experience issues in its first run but with just 4 months of planning, Ultra did an exceptional job at making sure its attendees remained safe and content.

Prolific rapper Logic has taken to Twitter to announce the third single from his upcoming project Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Sleeveless Records Releases Killer “Flexx” Remix Album
Last year Sleeveless Recordings unleashed one of Stylust’s biggest hits to date, “Flexx”, from his Tidal Wave EP. Now “Flexx” has its own remix album and is somehow even better than ever before. The 7-track compilation features remixes from West Coast bass up-and-comers like ColtCuts, AHEE,  Kowta, in addition to Stylust’s own heavy VIP rework.
This album began with a remix contest for Bamboo Bass Festival where the prize involved an official Sleeveless release. Sleeveless couldn’t release just one, so this killer remix album was born. The results couldn’t have been better. This album absolutely rips, and breathes new life into an already epic single.

ReauBeau, Loris Cimino and Twan Ray deliver powerful track ‘Louder’
ReauBeau & Loris Cimino – Louder (ft. Twan Ray)
It’s not often that you come across with a track that makes you feel truly empowered and regardless of your current mood, grabs you out of the chair and gets you going. This is exactly what ReauBeau, Loris Cimino and Twan Ray managed to accomplish with their upcoming collaboration ‘Louder’, which is released on Future Generation 12 March.
“Louder is a feel-good motivational track which is about finding the inner hero in yourself. Regardless of all the adversities and chaos in life, you need to battle and overcome the problems and get back on your feet, even when being put to the ground. As how it tends to be, all the good things happen after some harder times.”
ReauBeau, Loris Cimino and Twan Ray about ‘Louder’.
ReauBeau is a highly interesting name in the electronic music scene; besides his multiple releases on Spinnin’ Records among other top labels, he has found some success in producing music for commercials. On top of everything, his single ‘Dreams’ has even been remixed by the one of the biggest DJ/producers Tiesto, which is a truly special achievement. Despite of the artists have 12 years in between, music once again proves being a universal language, without knowing the term of ‘age’.
Loris Cimino, the 21-year-old Swiss artist, represents the young uprising scene of next generation music producers in this collaboration and has started his 2019 in an highly convincing way, by releasing on labels such as Warner Music Denmark, Revealed Recordings and Protocol Recordings.
As a track, Louder is living up and beyond to its title. After pressing play you immediately enter a fully fleshed out world created by the artists. Twan Ray’s expertly crafted vocals are underscored by muted percussion and an electric guitar which all bring the best out of the rebel rock atmosphere with a modern production spin. The drops incorporate the incredible vocals and ramp things up a notch by infusing future bass elements in a fresh and creative way. As you continue listening, you’ll appreciate the added orchestral layers and switch ups which gives the track a true feeling of progression and dynamism. Louder is everything, and even more what you’re looking after from a motivational track, to get you over and beyond your adversities in life.

Facing Historically Low Prices, Brazilian Farmers Aren’t Selling Their Crop
The current price of coffee futures on the commodities market has, as of writing this, dipped just below the $.91 mark, bottoming out thus far today at 90.88 cents. It is sadly no longer news when the C price hits a new low; the only number that seems to be increasing is just exactly how long it is has been since the price of coffee was this low. Currently, that number sits at 13 years.
In response to this, some Brazilian farmers are refusing to sell their harvest until there is what Bloomberg calls a “price miracle.”
As the article notes, a record crop from the past season has helped usher in the historically low prices, and with a similar yield expected this year, hedge funds—the people who obviously should be in charge of making coffee valuations—are “wagering on further declines.” With the threat of even lower prices looming, Nelson Salvaterra of Rio de Janeiro’s Coffee New Selection tells Bloomberg that many farmers are “hoarding their beans” in hopes of a “miraculous” recovery in the C price.
The numbers back up Salvaterra’s claim. In March, green coffee exports dropped by 20%, to 2.6 million bags—roughly 156 million kilos or 343.2 million pounds—where it is expected to remain in April. The amount that was shipped, according to Salvaterra was only to “[cover] previously agreed upon contracts.”
In the short term, withholding coffee is “doing more harm than good.” Though the prices have increased due to the artificial shortage, it is setting the price higher for Brazilian coffee than that of other countries, further slowing the export rate. But for the farmers, the hope is that they can hold off on selling their crop until the price rebounds. But for this gambit to pay off, the C price of coffee will have to do something it hasn’t reliably done in a long time: it will have to increase.
Let’s hope their gamble pays off.

Kazuhiro Nagasawa: The Sprudge Twenty Interview
Kazuhiro Nagasawa (Photo courtesy Kazuhiro Nagasawa)
Welcome to the Sprudge Twenty interviews presented by Pacific Barista Series! Read more about the Sprudge Twenty and see all of our interviews here.
Nominated by Mami Sakamoto
Kazuhiro Nagasawa is an entrepreneur and coffee professional based in Morioka City, some 300 miles from the city of Tokyo on the northern tip of Honshu. He is the owner/operator of his own eponymous small town coffee brand, Nagasawa Coffee, founded in 2012.
Here’s more on why Nagaswa Coffee is special from Mimi Sakamoto’s nominating essay:
“Let me explain a little bit about my hometown, the city of Morioka and its relationship with coffee. Coffee is loved by all generations here, and many families have their favorite coffee roasters and cafes. But what they call ‘coffee’ has traditionally meant a dark roasted, thick, strong tasting drink. When Nagasawa Coffee opened in 2012, their coffee selection had fruity, lighter, or sometimes unique tastes in addition to ‘traditional’ dark ones.
Mr. Nagasawa was not trying to follow ‘in-fashion’ coffee then. His coffee choices are not swayed by trends. Instead, he is cultivating his own world of coffee, traveling from Africa to Taiwan to keep his knowledge current, and expressing everything he’s learned here for the locals. I think this is how a barista in a small town can contribute to change and influence the world of coffee.”
Sprudge Media Network spoke with Nagasawa digitally from Morioka City.
This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.
What issue in coffee do you care about most?
I care about the future of coffee cultivation, especially how it will be affected by global warming. Secondly, I am concerned about the worldwide rapidly growing demand for coffee, which may lead to an imbalance in supply.
What cause or element in coffee drives you?
In 2011, I encountered the Great East Japan Earthquake, the biggest earthquake that we had ever experienced.
The seacoast areas of Tohoku region, or the North East side of Japan where we live, had massive damage. From day one of the disasters, I couldn’t help thinking that I have to do something.
My desire became stronger day by day and about a month later, there I was, visiting from shelter to shelter of the seaside towns hit by the massive tsunami. Taking a whole day, I served so many people cups of coffee that I couldn’t count how many they were every day. The more I served, the more people became delighted, thankful for me with many smiles. Some of the victims even told me, “thank you very much for coming over to such a terrible disaster area,” and I was unexpectedly encouraged by those words.
During this activity, I strongly felt the magic and miracle power of coffee that made me think deeply about how good it was to be involved in the world of coffee. Unlike water or foods, we can live without coffee. However, at the moment you have a sip of coffee, a joy arises. Feeling healed, a calm space is born, and smiles overflow. That strange feeling that I had under that ultimate and devastating natural circumstance made me mad about coffee more than ever.
What issue in coffee do you think is critically overlooked?
The reality of coffee grower’s poverty.
What is the quality you like best about coffee?
Coffee can take us beyond countries, regions, languages, ethnic background, and religions. It provides us opportunities to share our common values. I believe it is a wonderful drink that connects people to people all over the world.
Did you experience a “god shot” or life-changing moment of coffee revelation early in your career?
A long, long time ago, one day, I hiked up to the top of a mountain for snowboarding. It was a tremendously cold day, and I was almost freezing. Then, somebody poured a cup of hot coffee from a thermos for me. I vividly remember the scene and its unforgettably delicious taste of the coffee still now.
It was not that tasty as we could call “specialty,” it was precisely my life-changing moment that made me realize it all depends on the environment or situation; we could find any coffee to be the best coffee. I could say it was a very precious discovery for my career.
What is your idea of coffee happiness?
My idea of coffee happiness is: Coffee is always a side player, not takes a leading role but it still beside us when we need it. Coffee is always there when important decisions are made or brilliant inventions are found in history. I think what coffee happiness truly means is bringing to us our everyday life itself. No drama needed. Spending our daily lives with a cup of coffee is such a wonderful treat. Also, I would like to always be with coffee as a part of people’s ordinary lives.
If you could have any job in the coffee industry, what would it be and why?
I would be a coffee farmer and cultivate coffee from scratch all by myself. My town, Morioka, is very cold in winter, so it’s impossible to grow coffee here. So I have an aspiration to commit to producing coffee.
Who are your coffee heroes?
All the customers who come to my store, including the past and future visitors, are my heroes. Without any supports by all of them, we, Nagasawa Coffee, don’t exist.
If you could drink coffee with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
No doubt, it would be John Lennon. Although John and I are not the same age, we share the same birthday, and unilaterally I have admired him for many years. If this were to happen, for me to drink coffee with him, it would be amazing. However, to speak honestly, I would like to have a drink of something stronger than coffee if given the chance with John Lennon!
If you didn’t get bit by the coffee bug, what do you think you’d be doing instead?
I would be a professional snowboarder (if my age does not matter). I have quite a long career in snowboarding, and there are a lot of great places to go snowboarding with ideal snow conditions around my city.
Do you have any coffee mentors?
Nope. Nobody. I started my career in coffee by self-study and have kept it that way to the present.
What do you wish someone would’ve told you when you were first starting out in coffee?
When I first started in coffee, I knew nobody who was in the coffee industry then. I had to go very far to find my way. If I could have some advice from somebody, it would be much more comfortable. However, as much tough time as I been through, I now feel I am making good use of my past experiences.
Name three coffee apparatuses you’d take into space with you.
I would choose just one. AeroPress. I want to challenge pressing in weightless space.
Best song to brew coffee to?
Something by the artist French Kiwi Juice.
Look into the crystal ball—where do you see yourself in 20 years?
I can see I am on the southern island of Japan, and enjoying watching coffee cherries.
What’d you eat for breakfast this morning?
I had natto (fermented soybeans), white rice, grilled fish and miso soup. Quite a traditional Japanese breakfast.
When did you last drink coffee? What was it?
I would prefer to tell you when I drank coffee for the very first time, because I feel like my last coffee is always in the future. So, I think I was nine years old or so back then. My father brought coffee beans at a local coffee shop and brewed it in a siphon for me. I do not remember what coffee it was. Despite my father’s solemn and polite conduct, I could not understand the taste of the coffee at all. It has become a good memory of my late father.
Thank you.

I received a doctor’s note for an employee that says, ‘…saw the employee today and she can return to work, but the patient needs to be able to work from home until further notice.’  I know reasonable accommodations are required for a qualified disability, but I have no other information than that.  What should I do?
Many of us are familiar with the term reasonable job accommodations as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Several states have their own laws mimicking the ADA which would be impossible for us to address in a single article.
But we haven’t talked about the ADA lately, so I asked Elizabeth Bolduc, an associate attorney with Bugbee & Conkle, LLP to share her expertise. She focuses her work in the areas of labor and employment law. Please remember that Elizabeth’s comments shouldn’t be construed as legal advice or as pertaining to any specific factual situations. If you have detailed questions, they should be addressed with your friendly neighborhood labor and employment attorney.
Elizabeth, welcome to HR Bartender. Obviously, we can’t address all of the state laws that are similar to the ADA. But from a federal standpoint, what are reasonable job accommodations?
[Bolduc] The term ‘reasonable accommodation’ comes from Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (the ‘ADA’).  The ADA requires employers to provide ‘reasonable accommodations’ to qualified employees or applicants with disabilities unless doing so would create an undue hardship or direct threat to others or themselves in the workplace.
A reasonable accommodation is essentially a modification or change in the workplace, including to an individual’s position or a workplace policy, to enable an individual with a disability to enjoy equal employment opportunities.
Are employers required to provide reasonable job accommodations?  And if so, under what circumstances?
Tumblr media
[Bolduc] Yes, under certain circumstances.  The ADA applies to employers who employ 15 or more individuals (although state laws may, and tend to, require fewer employees).
As mentioned above, the ADA requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to qualified disabled individuals unless doing so would create an undue hardship. An individual is ‘qualified’ if they can perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
Following the ADA Amendment Act of 2008 (ADAAA), the definition of ‘disability’ is construed broadly to mean, ‘a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; a record or past history of such impairment; or being regarded as having a disability.’
If these coverage prerequisites are met – meaning the employer is covered by the ADA, the individual is qualified for the position, and the individual is disabled under the ADA – then the employer’s duty to provide a reasonable accommodation is triggered when either:
A disabled employee or applicant requests an accommodation, or
When the employer becomes aware that a disabled employee needs an accommodation to perform their job.
From there the employer and disabled employee must engage in the interactive process, which is simply a dialogue between the two parties to determine what, if any, accommodation should be provided.
Are reasonable accommodations expensive? Why or why not?
[Bolduc] In my experience, there are many reasonable accommodations that are not expensive or even monetary for that matter.  Remember an employer does not have to provide a reasonable accommodation that would cause an‘undue hardship’.  Cost can certainly be a factor in demonstrating undue hardship to the employer.
Can you share some common reasonable job accommodations?  Is working from home one of them?
[Bolduc] There are a number of possible reasonable accommodations that an employer may have to provide.  Some common examples are:
Making existing facilities accessible; acquiring or modifying equipment;
Reassignment to a vacant position; part-time or modified work schedules;
Changing tests, training materials, or policies;
Providing qualified interpreters;
Job restructuring; reallocating or altering marginal job duties that a disabled employee is unable to perform; and
Leaving to obtain medical treatment.
Examples of unreasonable accommodations are creating a new position, eliminating the essential functions of the position, promoting someone, displacing a coworker, or where the individual’s disability imposes a direct threat to others or themselves in the workplace.
Whether working from home is a reasonable accommodation will depend on whether the essential functions of the position can actually be performed at home and/or whether physical presence is an essential function of that position.  An employer may also consider, for example, its ability to effectively communicate with and supervise the employee at home, whether adequate work equipment can be installed at the employees’ home, and whether there are security risks in allowing the employee to work from home.
There are some jobs that by their very nature cannotbe performed at home, such as store clerk.  However, it may be reasonable where an employee may perform the essential functions at home, such as a customer service representative.
When it comes to reasonable accommodations, are terms like “until further notice” the norm?  Are employers able to push back and request more specificity?
[Bolduc] Without more context,it is hard to say. Employers are entitled to know that the individual has a covered disability for which it needs reasonableaccommodation and the individual’s limitations due to the disability.
When an individual’s disability and/or the need for accommodation is not obvious, an employer may require more specificity by requiring the individual to submit documentation about the disability and the functional limitations from the individual’s health care provider.  However, the request for medical documentation must be relevant to the individual’s disability and need for accommodation.  It does not privity the employer to know everything about the individual’s medical history.
In certain circumstances, an employer may require a medical examination by the health care provider of the employer’s choice, so long as the exam is limited to determining the ADA disability and the functional limitations that requiresan accommodation, but the employer must pay for the exam.

Last question. If employers have questions about creating reasonable accommodations, where can they go to learn more?
[Bolduc] There are a lot of FREE online resources that employers can use.
U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL)

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)
https://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/publications/ada17.cfm

A HUGE thanks to Elizabeth for sharing her knowledge with us. If you want to stay in touch with her (and I know you do), be sure to subscribe to Bugbee & Conkle’s publications at www.bugbeelawyers.com and follow her on Twitter @EmploymentLawEB.
While we might not talk about it every day, legislation like the Americans with Disabilities Act is still a big part of our roles. Understanding our obligations under the law is essential.
