An in-motion typographic narration of a piece of dialogue from Samuel Becketts one-act play »Endgame«. The title is taken from the last part of a chess game, when there are very few pieces left. An attempt at visualising absurdity in the dialogue between two characters with contradictory and ambivalent relationships with each other; using typography, color and dramatic pauses.

Eine typographische Narration von Samuel Becketts »Endgame«. Der englische Titel kommt aus dem letzten Teil eines Schachspiels, wo es nur noch wenige Figuren gibt. Dieses Video ist mein Versuch Absurdit‰t im Dialog zwischen zwei Charakteren mit einer widerspr¸chlichen und schizophrenen Beziehung zueinander mithilfe von Typografie, Farbe und dramatischer Pausen zu visualisieren.

DATENSÄTZE / DATA SETS

The spot titled ‚Datensätze' is dealing with the topic of data storage and data collection of individual digital footprints in a humorous way. The shortstory is generated out of words found in the ‚Duden' which are related by the primary word ‚Daten'. The story takes up the ease users feel about the issue. The visualization is based on the aesthetics of a collection, moreover of the idea that many bits of data combined can tell an interrelated story.

Unter dem Titel ‚Datensätze' befasst sich der Spot humorvoll mit dem Thema Datenspeicherung und Datensammlung individueller digitaler Fußabdrücke im Internet. Die hier erzählte Kurzgeschichte, gebildet aus einer Sammlung im Duden zu findender Wörter mit dem Grundwort ‚Daten', greift die Leichtigkeit vieler User auf, mit der das Thema der Datensammlung empfunden wird. Die Art der Visualisierung soll hierbei vor allem Bezug auf die Ästhetik einer Sammlung nehmen, die aus vielen Datenhäppchen besteht, zusammengesetzt jedoch eine zusammenhängende Geschichte erzählt.

C11H17NO3

The Video ‚Pop the Cactus‘ is one part of the intermedial project ‚C11H17NO3‘. It is named after the chemical compound Mescalin, which is known for its psychodelic effects and occurs in the peyote cactus.

Book and Video are an audiovisual translation using the cactus as a symbol for defense and sculpturing an abstract process of quitting mental defensemechanisms in order to break through limiting borders.

Das Video ‚Pop the cactus‘ ist Teil von dem intermedialen Projekt ‚C11H17NO3‘. Die chemische Formel steht für den Stoff Mescalin, den man in dem Peyote Kaktus findet. Das Video ist eine audiovisuelle Übersetzung die den Prozess des Ausbrechens aus Abwehrmechanismen abstrakt darstellt. Der Kaktus wird dabei als Symbol für mentale Schutzmauern eingesetzt.

The cryptic symbols of this typographic composition communicate to the passengers at the Berlin Friedrichstrasse underground station an important and relevant message: they wish them a good journey. To decode this message, one should follow the movement of the characters.

Die kryptischen Symbole dieser typografischen Komposition vermitteln den Fahrgästen auf den Berliner U-Bahnhof Friedrichstraße eine wichtige und aktuelle Botschaft: Sie wünschen eine »Gute Fahrt«. Um diese Botschaft zu entziffern, soll man der Bewegung der Buchstaben folgen.

EXIT / AUSGANG

One year after the referendum on the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union (Brexit), this work offers a playful and provocative commentary on such referendum, by displaying an emergency exit directly above the railway tracks – an image evoking the dangers arising from the idea of leaving the Union in a simple yet bold style. These ideas – a product of the right-wing political factions of the member States – are here illustrated by means of word formations (e.g. Frexit, Grexit, Öxit) recalling the word “Brexit”.

Ein Jahr nach dem Referendum zum Austritt des Vereinigten Königreichs aus der Europäischen Union (Brexit), kommentiert diese Arbeit das Referendum in einer vollkommenen überspitzten Art und Weise. Der Notausgang »Exit« wird dabei über den Bahngleisen montiert. Das soll plakativ die Gefahren aufzeigen, die von den Gedanken

ausgehen, die Union zu verlassen. Diese Gedanken, welche von den rechten Fraktionen der Mitgliedstaaten ausgehen, werden mittels Wortbildungen gezeigt (Frexit, Grexit, Öxit), welche dem Begriff »Brexit« nachempfunden sind.

DIGITAL LOVE / DIGITALE LIEBE

Die U-Bahn und U-Bahnstationen sind Orte des Ausweichens. Die meisten Leute versuchen den Blicken anderer Fahrgäste zu entfliehen und keine Aufmerksamkeit von anderen geschenkt zu bekommen. Smartphones bieten die perfekte Möglichkeit vom realen Kontakt mit Fremden zu vermeiden. Neben Personen, die durch soziale Netzwerke scrollen, gibt es immer wieder Menschen, die fast erstarrt minutenlang auf ihre Chats schauen. Sowohl bei jungen als auch alten Leuten füllen Herzchen und Emojis den Bildschirm. Unsere Projektionen sind eine Auseinandersetzung an zum Teil virtuelle Romanzen und die Flucht ins Internet. Wir stellen die Frage, wie frei wir mit dem Smartphone in der Hand oder Hosentasche tatsächlich noch sind.

Subways and subway stations are places of evasion. People try to avoid glances and the attention from other passengers. Smartphones are the perfect solution to sidestep real contact with strangers. Beside passengers scrolling through social networks, a lot of people stare for minutes freezed on their screen. Young people as well as old people observe their chats filled with hearts and other corny emoticons. Our projections are an hommage to virtual romances and the escape to the internet. Finally, how free are we really with our smartphones in our hand or in our pocket?

YES OR NO / JA ODER NEIN

Women should shave their armpits, organic is just a lifestyle and the EU is the best idea of the 20th century! „Yes or no?“ faces you with statements: provocative, odd, ridiculous and irrelevant ones. It’s up to you wether you agree or oppose.The work consists of 12 displays and one book. Each display shows one statement, as well as each page of the book. The rules are simple: Stay in front of the display and hold the opinion or go to another one. Let the page in the book or oppose and rip the page out of the book.„Yes or no?“ is consciously black-and-white painting and divisive, because it wants tickle the attitude out of the viewer – in a time in which nobody has the courage to speak out because of political correctness. 

Frauen sollten sich unter den Achseln rasieren, Bio ist nur ein Lifestyle und die EU ist die beste Idee des 20. Jahrhunderts! „Yes or no?“ konfrontiert dich mit Aussagen: Provokante, komische, irre, unrelevante. Es ist an dir, welchen du zustimmst und welche du ablehnst. Die Arbeit besteht aus 12 Displays und einem Buch. Auf jedem Display steht eine Aussage, ebenso auf jeder Seite des Buchs. Die Regeln sind einfach: Stehen bleiben und die Meinung vertreten oder weitergehen und die Beine vertreten. Seite im Buch lassen oder die Aussage ablehnen und herausreißen. „Yes or no?" ist bewusst schwarz-weiß-malerisch und polarisierend, denn es will die Haltung der Betrachter herauskitzeln – in einer Zeit in der man sich vor lauter political correctness nichts mehr zu sagen traut.

Using public transportation. An ordinary act that brings us from a to b under society’s constant surveillance. Here we are helplessly confronted with odors, sounds and various visuals. We aim at behaving in accordance to societal norms and deliver the expected performance of a functioning human being.

Greta fights the expectations by the society in her daydreams and sees herself in a dichotomy. She tries to bear the conformity and moves from a calm introspection to a intense conflict in her own space. Finally she breaks loose of her daydream and finds herself at the beginning again.

U-Bahn fahren. Ein alltäglicher Akt transferiert uns von A nach B unter den strengen Augen der Gesellschaft. Hier sind wir Gerüchen, Geräuschen und visuellen Eindrücken hilflos ausgeliefert. Gesellschaftlichen Konventionen passen wir uns an und liefern die erwartete Performance eines funktionierenden Mensch-Sein. 

Greta kämpft in ihrem Tagtraum mit der sozialen Erwartungshaltung und sieht sich selbst im Zwiespalt. Sie versucht mit der Konformität zu brechen, springt von einer ruhigen Selbstwahrnehmung zur intensiven Auseinandersetzung im eigenen Raum. Letztendlich befreit sie sich von ihrem Tagtraum und findet sich am Anfang wieder.

BERLIN BRENNT / BERLIN BURNS

When it comes to Graffiti, Berlin is one of the worldwide hotspots. In this aspect  the train station Friedrichstraße played a huge role in the past. For years the entire graffiti scene was taking place at the S1 train tracks at Friedrichstraße. In the late 1980’s it was still part of the GDR and kind of a lawless area. In the early 1990s freshly painted trains entered while the scene gathered on a bench on the track.

The visual work ‘Berlin Burns’ wants to take the viewer on a journey back to the colourful past. Original sprayed trains from the early and mid 90’s by underground legends INKA, REW or WESP are shown in this Rotoscopy animation. The animation is done simply through tracing over the motion picture footage, frame by frame. The product of this type of technique will come out as a unique picture, which creats its very unique dynamic.

Wenn es um Graffiti geht, gilt Berlin als einer der weltweiten Hotspots. Der S – Bahnhof Friedrichstraße spielte hierbei in der Vergangenheit eine zentrale Rolle. Ein großer Teil der Berliner Graffitikultur fand seinen Ursprung am S1 Bahngleis des S-Bahnhofs Friedrichstraße. In den späten 1980ern gehörte er noch zur DDR und war eine Art rechtsfreier Raum. In den frühen 1990ern fuhren dort frisch bemalte Züge ein, während sich die Szene auf einer Bank am Gleis sammelte.

Die visuelle Arbeit ‚Berlin Brennt’ möchte den Zuschauer auf eine Reise in die bunten 90er Jahre mitnehmen. Besprühte Züge aus den frühen und mittleren 90er Jahren von den Berliner Untergrund Legenden INKA, REW und WESP wurden hierbei durch die Technik der Rotoskopie animiert. Dabei werden Aufnahmen im realen Raum gedreht und im Nachhinein pro Frame / Bild digital nachskizziert. Durch diese Animationstechnik erhält das Bild eine sehr einzigartige Dynamik.

PEACEFUL BERLIN / FRIEDLICHES BERLIN

In the last decades Berlin was getting more and more diverse and colourful. This is expressed by people of many nations coming to Berlin, the architecture and urban planning or the establishment of varied subcultures. From this diversity some conflicts could arise, however, against that positive trends originate.

Berlin is said to be the capital city of Street Art and Graffiti. From huge wall pictures to miniatures, at Berlins facades, house entrances and every kind of walls you will find Street Art from artists all over the world. A lot of them want to criticize political and social issues. Indeed, there are many artists who just want to make the city more colourful!

With my contribution I would like to give the people a positive impulse to discover the colourful and peaceful aspects of this unique city!

In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurde Berlin immer vielfältiger und bunter. Ausdruck hiervon sind Menschen aus zahlreichen Nationen, die nach Berlin kommen, die Architektur und Stadtplanung oder die Etablierung vielfältiger Subkulturen. Aus dieser Vielfalt können sich Konflikte ergeben, dem entgegen entstehen aber auch vielfältige positive Trends.

Berlin gilt als Hauptstadt der Street Art und der Graffiti-Kunst. Von riesigen Wandbildern bis hin zu Miniaturen findet man an Berlins Fassaden, Hauseingängen und Mauern findet man Street Art von Künstlern aus der ganzen Welt. Viele von ihnen wollen Kritik an politischen und sozialen Themen üben, es gibt aber auch viele, die mit ihrer Kunst die Stadt einfach bunter machen wollen.

Mit meinem Beitrag möchte ich Menschen einen positiven Impuls geben, die bunten und friedlichen Aspekte dieser einzigartigen Stadt zu entdecken!

CREATIVE WAITING / KREATIVES WARTEN

The daily routine is boring, monotonous and only seems to go round in circles.

People are heading from one appointment to another, most of the times trapped between responsibilities and commitments. The to-do list in your head never ends and fear based thoughts keep spinning in your mind.

Based on the circle movement of a loading icon, we depicted elements from the daily routine and turned waiting into a short creative and hopefully cheerful animation. 

Once in a while you need to blow off some steam and take life as easy as the hamster.

Die Alltagsroutine ist langweilig, monoton und sich scheint sich nur im Kreis zu drehen.

Wir Menschen hetzen von einem Termin zum anderen, meistens gefangen in Verantwortungen und Verpflichtungen. Die To-Do Liste im Kopf scheint endlos und sorgenvolle Gedanken kreisen in unserem Kopf.

Basierend auf der Kreisbewegung eines Ladesymbols haben wir Elemente aus dem Alltag dargestellt und in eine kurze, kreative und hoffentlich fröhliche Animation übersetzt.

Von Zeit zu Zeit müssen wir etwas Druck ablassen und das Leben so leicht nehmen, wie ein Hamster.
