decided to watch 1st born (2019) as it’s advertised as a comedy (and some lighthearted, mindless script is what i need rn because being sick isn’t fun and i don’t want anything super serious) and i’m definitely disappointed that val only appears for a couple minutes over the whole film, but my mind is also full of question marks because like. that is 100% his voice but it seems production took place after his cancer treatment and before sonantic’s recreation so i’m like. how??? only things i can think of are 1) some sort of archive recordings that happened to fit, 2) jack stepped in to provide his voice, or 3) sonantic was already working on their recreation of val’s voice and it just wasn’t known publicly yet? i suppose if jack stepped in at all it’ll show that in the credits, but then i would think that would also be reflected on imdb and the imdb page for the movie doesn’t mention him. so. brain = big question mark about that

watching real genius again and absolutely dying at the difference between chris and ice and the fact that the movies were released less than a year and a half apart, and when you think about the process of movie production, that could easily mean val was on set for each less than a year apart and that’s just amazing

ugh the fact that cyclone was just WAITING for ice to be gone so he could ground mav

as fun as it is to joke around about ice doing the exact opposite of what others thought or expected to happen, in seriousness he’s the only one there who Knows. he knows a lot more than he lets on; he knows a lot more than mav’s other superiors. yes, maverick has broken rules and gone against orders. we’ve seen that (breaking the hard deck? the flybys, anyone? which of course ice participated in the second at the end of the movie, but i digress). but ice is the only one there who’s actually flown with him, who understands his flying and fighting styles. while the other superior officers look down on mav for his reputation and perhaps his name, and they don’t understand why ice would want him to train the pilots for the tgm mission, ice is the only one there who knows that maverick is the only person who is capable of teaching the pilots how to complete a mission of that caliber because of the way he is, the way he flies. maverick is the only person ice trusts to be able to teach the pilots how to successfully complete the mission and how to successfully come home
