Not many people have a chance to do the things that Mike Kuza has done. Bypassing the struggle that is the local band circuit, he emerged early this year as the first artist to be signed to Dark Kingdom Records. And with an album that is only a week old, fans are already flocking to his music as well as his unique style. Even after some distribution troubles, “From Hell and Hate” still came in the Top Ten of iTunes metal charts. And although he’s not yet touring, we sat down with Kuza to talk all about it.
You just released your first EP on March 6th. How do you feel that it’s been received so far?
I think it’s going pretty well since it’s dropped. It’s been going pretty good right now.
Who were your major influences while writing the album?
There’s a lot of influence from Rob Zombie and Slipknot. A little bit of Manson, too. I listen to a lot of death metal bands.
Who’s your favorite death metal band?
I really like Through the Eyes of the Dead, and I just listened to them a couple of minutes ago. They’re one of my favorites.
What are your goals for the next year as far as music goes?
Just trying to get my EP out, further and more known. I also want to try and gather band members and try and get that going.
  Is the EP available internationally?
Yeah, it’s available on iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify.
We know you’re at least a year out from touring, but when it happens what would be your ideal first tour?
Oh jeez. I mean, I’ve made a lot of friends on the road. It’d be a lot of fun to tour with Vampires Everywhere!, or maybe even Davey Suicide or Motionless In White. Or all of them together, that’d be cool.
Are you planning on making a music video for “I Am The Devil”?
There’s going to be a lyric video first. Hopefully there will be a video for it later down the road.
Do you have another single planned from the EP yet?
I personally have no idea. I like No Escape, that’s one of my favorites on the EP. So if there’s going to be one, I would hope it’d be that one.
Which song on the EP were you most excited for people to hear?
Probably I Am The Devil, since it’s the single. I think crowds can react to it a lot easier than some other songs on the EP, and it’s really catchy.
You have one t-shirt up for preorder. Do you have any more merch planned for the future?
Yeah. I’ve had some ideas going through my mind. I made the last one, so I definitely got more ideas.
If you had to pick a favorite tattoo on your body, what would it be and why?
It’d have to be my hand. It’s the heartagram from HIM. That one, and I have a memorial tattoo for my sister on the back of my leg that takes up a majority of the back of my leg. So those two mean the most to me.
  Who does your tattoos?
His name is Jason Porter, he’s up in Pennsylvania. He’s a friend of mine, but he works at a shop.
Do you consider tattoos art or investment?
Definitely art. There is so much you can do with them, creativity wise.
Do your tattoos have a theme?
Not really, not right now. My throat’s gonna be scary, like, satanic-ish. One arm is going to be horror stuff.
Are you trying to do your whole body?
Oh yeah. I’m trying to be decked out in tattoos. Slowly but surely.
What made you want to get into body modification?
I don’t know. I like ‘em. I like crazy, weird stuff. I wanna go one size bigger than this in my nostrils. My septum and my nostrils are both at 2g, and I’d like to go a size bigger. My ears are at two inches.
How long have you had your ears stretched that big?
Oh, it’s been a while, probably about a year or two.
  Which hurt worse to stretch?
Oh, definitely the nose. It’s just all cartilage.
Did you ever blow anything out while you were stretching?
Well, I ripped one of my ears, a long time ago. It sucked. I was a little bit bigger than 5/8ths and I was taping it wrong. So the tape cut into my ear and I woke up and it was falling out and my ear was bleeding during the night I didn’t know.
What’s one message you want kids to take away from your music?
Basically, the whole theme of it is hatred. But it’s not the wrong kind of message. That someone who looks different and acts different can do something, they can do what they want to in life. To never stop, and to be themselves.
Were you ever worried that fans just wouldn’t like your album?
Oh, I’m still worried about that now. It’s out and I’m terrified. There will be some hate, but whatever. I’m not too worried about it. But I’m going to stay away from the youtube comments. There’s so many people that are getting the wrong information and just ragging on me.

Rapid Fire with Mike Kuza
What’s one musician you listen to that people wouldn’t expect?
I listen to Mumford and Sons, Bright Eyes. I listen to a lot of indie stuff.
What’s one thing you’re obsessed with that people wouldn’t expect?
Oh jeez, I don’t know. I mean, I’m obsessed with makeup? As weird as that sounds I am. I draw a lot and stuff, and so I like art a lot. And I like to incorporate that. And it can become obsessive. I mean, I’ve had to fix my eyebrows, like, 40,000 times.
What’s your favorite city to travel to? And it can’t be your hometown.
Oh, trust me, that is not my favorite city. I like Las Vegas a lot. Seattle’s pretty cool. Basically the major cities. I’ve toured Warped Tour, so I see mostly the parking lots.
  Chocolate or Vanilla?
Vanilla, in some stuff. In ice cream? Chocolate. But if you were talking about Reece’s or Kit Kats, the white chocolate ones.
  Smoke or drink?
  Drink.
  Coffee or Redbull?
  Redbull.
  Boybands or rappers?
  I’d have to say rappers.
  Nsync or Backstreet Boys?
  Oh definitely Nsync. For sure.
  Mac or PC?
I have never had a Mac before, but I’d still have to say Mac because my computer is a piece of crap.
What’s your favorite kind of car?
I used to be obsessed with Golf GTI’s as long as they’re decked out, like body kit and everything.
Aside from your own, what album are you most excited for this year?
  HIM.
  Katy Perry or Lady Gaga?
Can I pick to kill both of them? I’ll kill both of them.
  Harry Potter or Hunger Games?
Harry Potter. I never really got into Hunger Games. But I’d rather have Lord of the Rings.
If you had to cover one song, what would it be?
Oh jeez, I don’t know. That’s a hard one. Definitely nothing from HIM. That’s too much. I’d be afraid I wouldn’t do it justice. If we had to do HIM, I’d do Heartache Every Moment. If it wasn’t HIM, I don’t know. It really depends. I don’t wanna do any of the poppy stuff. It’s over done.
  Pepsi or Coke?
  Coke.
