i also had a question. can birds not. adopt humans? after her parents die hiyoko is just left to fend for herself and partially be raised by wolves. NO ONE took her in? Could they? she must have had no living relatives and shes the only human we officially meet in the game But we do know. SOME humans live in the city but why wasnt she relocated. did i miss that is part of the evil plot "throw the girl out into the wild hope she comes back alive for the beginning of the plan in 8 years!!!"

Still thinking about Hitori and loss of identity.
I love watching people experience these games for the first time, and it's so interesting how in both BBL and the King's flashback in Holiday Star, it takes most people a while to figure out who Hitori is. There's this gap where they're reading dialogue from a character who they can't quite place. Sometimes that gap lasts a long time. Sometimes they don't figure it out until after the flashbacks end.
He's Nemo, he's nobody, so much of himself was tied up in caring for the other children. And when he lost that, he was just Hitori. And maybe it's better to be nobody, than to be alone.

So glad you like them! I had a lot of fun with the project, those quails are eternally evocative! 😂
(I actually came up with designs for a few more cards too - these were my favorite, but I still might end up painting the others sometime because of how fun these were!)

Ho ho ho! Here's my Secret Santa gift for @notgrs — some lightly angsty quails! These are inspired by the moon and sun cards from the Rider-Waite tarot deck... hope you enjoy!

Forcing my friend to play Hatoful Boyfriend so I can relive the game through them. Brought back a lot of love I still have for the silly bird game. (Also an excuse to try out a different style and brushes lol)

Just thinking about Hitori, and how he was a caretaker with so much responsibility from such a young age. He grew up defining himself by how well he could take care of the other orphans. That's the only thing that mattered. He never learned how to exist just for himself.
So when everything is stripped away from him, not ONLY does he feel tremendous guilt about his failure to save Nageki, but now that guilt is the only thing he has left to define himself by... it might feel like, under that pain and the purpose it gives him, there's nothing else at all.

Gotta love the implication that the Hawk Party is monitoring Hiyoko as she hits on her homeroom teacher and they just go "Yup, that's pretty much what we're looking for. Good intimacy with birds."
