Rewatching ep4 and we need to talk about that moment when michonne pushed him. We can see how emotionally numb Rick is. He was there, physically but mentally he was long gone and you can see it in his face and in his eyes. It was terrifying.

yes let's talk about it! i have no idea how andrew lincoln did it but i swear his eyes look BLACK in that scene. just completely emotionless and cold. and when she shoves him with all of her (considerable!) strength and he DOES NOT BUDGE. just takes it and looks completely dead inside because he needs to be both literally and figuratively immovable in order to not react to her at all. rick was really really trying to "get ahead of it" as he put it in that moment, suppressing every bit of emotion and the love he has for her to try to make her leave. i think this is the moment where michonne was truly terrified as well, because she could see no trace of rick in him when he looked at her like that and said those things. it's also why she said "I just needed to hear you say it" when he says he's never gonna leave her to die in the next scene because for a minute there he was truly gone. it was honestly horrible to watch but really effective in terms of showing just how broken and scared rick had become. i'm sure rick hated himself in that moment and hates himself for it still.
