“Moonless Mid-Autumn” (壹剪梅·中秋無月) Translation
(It’s been almost 9 months, and a lot has happened, but I’m finally back!  And just in time for Mid Autumn again.  Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!)
Moonless Mid-Autumn
By Xin Qiji (Song dynasty, 12th century)
Recalling one Mid-Autumn spent opposite osmanthus blooms,
My liquor reflecting the flowers, the moon.
Tonight I sit at the same place expecting the same moon,
Yet the window is damp from clouds, wet with rain.
Wishing I could soar up to confront the gods in heaven,
But alas, the journey is difficult for a message, let alone me.
With only rosy candlelight to ease the gloom,
Let us drink our fill, sing to our heart’s content.

Myths around the world challenge @thewinedarksea & @ibuzoo
Chinese mythology | Chang’e Chang'e or Chang-o, originally known as Heng'e, is the Chinese goddess of the Moon. She is the subject of several legends in Chinese mythology, most of which incorporate several of the following elements: Houyi the archer, a benevolent or malevolent emperor, an elixir of life, and the Moon. She is married to the archer Houyi.

Inspired by @rainbowsky's comment on my previous Mid-Autumn Festival post, I thought I'll do up a post to share a little more about the festival and mooncakes in general, since there are many non-Chinese fans in the fandom.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated by many East and Southeast Asian countries and regions. It's always on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar = usually a date in September. Always a full moon on this date. People usually celebrate it by getting together with family, eating mooncakes, drinking tea. The kids (or young at heart) will play with lanterns and candles.
I used to carry lanterns like these around the neighbourhood. And we'll also make lanterns in school during art lessons (mine was considerably much uglier) Of course there are the plasticky, battery operated ones which I used to think were cool, until I grew up and realised old is gold.

The festival is based on the legend of Chang-e, the moon goddess who is believed to be residing on the moon with the jade rabbit. Her husband was Hou Yi, who once upon a time shot down nine suns (leaving just one, the one we have now). There's a whole story of her eating some pill that gives one longevity (evil husband wants it) and flew to the moon (that's why she lives there now). I won't elaborate but you can google if you're keen. There was also a little red little green rumour some months back that made reference to this legend - it's the one where GG was complaining about the heat. I'll link it if I can find it. GG also drew Chang-e in the bazaar drawing challenge.
Anyway, back to mooncakes. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and fillings. The traditional 'old school' ones usually have baked skin with fillings like lotus paste, red bean paste, sometimes with a salted egg yolk inside, or mixed nuts. Then there's the snow skin (I would liken it to mochi but less chewy and less stretchy) mooncake which comes in many colours. But modern times call for innovation so basically now you can find whatever fillings possible out there - green tea, black sesame, cranberry, durian and other fruity ones, coffee, ice cream, etc. Recent years mooncakes with molten centres have gotten popular - lava chocolate, lava salted egg, custard etc. You can even make them in jelly form (for those who wants something lighter). There's even keto mooncake. I swear there are new flavours coming out every year it's like a KPI for manufacturers, hotels to become fancier with each year.

My favourite is the teochew-style (my dialect) flaky skin yam mooncake, which is super sinful cos it's fried but damn yummy. Then there's also Shanghai mooncake, which looks more like a little ball. Suzhou mooncakes with pork filling, Hainanese mooncake which is nuttier and spicier. And many more that I'm not aware of. There are surely more variations in China, from the various cities and dialect groups.

I'm not sure which type of mooncake GG featured in his weibo post today but it contains bamboo shoots and meat (according to the words printed). So yea, the World of Mooncake is vast and constantly expanding. Even pets eat mooncakes now. I made my own doggie mooncakes (picture in my previous post) because I refuse to pay for overpriced ones from the online sellers.

I hope you enjoyed this post. It certainly made me hungry. Again, why are my mooncakes from Lyfen not here yet?!

fullnest bird’s nest mooncakes.
saw these on an instagram ad and got attracted as i do not eat the traditional mooncakes as they are too sweet for my taste buds, same goes to my family. so these seems a perfect substitute, just for having some dessert/mooncake during the mid autumn festival.
the packaging is really nice, a perfect gift set with four jelly mooncakes inside, i love the art on the boxes very much. there are two flavors, osmanthus goji bird’s nest mooncake 桂花枸杞 and galaxy gold butterfly pea bird’s nest mooncake 金箔蝶豆花. both flavors are nice, they are jelly and there’s bird’s nest in the middle when cut open.
compared to traditional mooncakes or other modern mooncakes, this is actually quite healthy with the ingredients having health benefits based on chinese medicine. and it’s not overly sweet, very refreshing and enjoyable to consume. we actually ate them all in one seating since the size was quite small as well.
happy mid autumn festival!
