the simplicity of their home is what kazuha enjoyed a lot, birds chirping, the koi fish swimming around in their pound and the wind was always calm. it was kazuha's sanctuary where he could enjoy a moment of peace without having to worry or think about being disturbed. plus this was a place where the both of them could be alone together, just them nobody else. it was their home.
kazuha was always amazed by the amount of detail ren put into their home, little things that represent the both of them. the maple leaves that would fall from the trees were making kazuha feel a little bit homesick from time to time, as they reminded him of his old home in inazuma. in the gardens of his old home where there would be plenty of maple trees.
as they are eating their homemade meal (simple but tasteful, just the way kazuha liked it) with their feline friends surrounding them kazuha listens to the words his fiance speaks to him.
❝ you deserve to be happy ren~ ❞ kazuha knew of ren's internal struggles with deserving the things he got. and even if he would never be able to fully understand how ren would feel, he would do his best to make him happy. if ren was happy then so was kazuha. ren's happiness was his own happiness.
❝ i would love to go to the lantern rite festival with you, but if you want we can watch it from outside of lique harbor, i know a hill from where we can watch the lanterns and fireworks from where nobody can disturb us. ❞
kazuha put down his now empty bowl and umi made his way over licking the bowl clean of some leftover fish. he turns his body towards ren and stares at him.
❝ i was thinking that we could add nilotpala lotuses to the pond, they are your favourite flora, right? ❞
he thought it would only be fair to have some of ren's favourite plants in the teapot as they have maple trees.
his first instinct is to say that he'll do it himself — wracked by that familiar COMPULSION to make himself useful. it isn't a chore; ren genuinely enjoys cooking. ( even if he personally has no need to eat. ) there is something comforting about the repetitive actions, in the simplicity of following a set of directions, measurements, timings. the thought of making food for kazuha feels strangely DOMESTIC — a simple way of expressing care for his fiancé without struggling against his too-blunt words. perhaps it says something about the wanderer that he's able to find joy in what most would consider MUNDANE. he only had a fleeting taste of what an ordinary life might look like before it was torn so cruelly from his grasp, after all ... and though he's resigned himself to such an abnormal existence, the brief opportunities he has to experience normalcy are so alluringly bittersweet.
❝ ... do you want to cook with me? ❞ he asks aloud. though ren may not be particularly ENTHUSIASTIC about his birthday, he supposes there's no crime in using it to his advantage. even if he can handle preparing the meal entirely by himself, there's a part of him that wants to make it with kazuha — simply for the sake of it. to pretend, if only for a little while, that their lives can be something gentle and ordinary.
it comes as no surprise that their home within the teapot was built with a kitchen. designing everything was a tricky affair; he couldn't simply ask kazuha what he liked — and while the nature of the realm made everything incredibly malleable, ren wanted to make a favorable FIRST IMPRESSION before they began tearing things apart. beyond simply the kitchen, he took care to sprinkle a number of locations about perfect for simply enjoying the scenery. a small clearing amid the maple trees. a seating area in the garden. one of his personal favorites comes in the form of a simple deck ( crafted of dark, stained wood ) running alongside the koi pond. it sits just high enough above the surface for one to dangle their legs comfortably — and affords a perfect view of the crystal clear water. fish naturally flock to their location, and haruki in particular seems utterly ENAMORED with the sight.
his meal sits by his side — a simple fish and rice dish. it feels a bit like a combination of their personal culinary styles.
❝ ... ❞ the wanderer hasn't touched his food, though it isn't out of a lack of INTEREST. ❝ you make me wonder if it's okay to be this happy. ❞ ren admits — and it's intended to be a COMPLIMENT more than anything else, albeit delivered in his unconventional way. ❝ i don't suppose you would be interested in accompanying me to the lantern rite this year? ❞ he only asks out of formality; an echo of the LAST BIRTHDAY they spent together. ❝ those festivities still aren't exactly to my liking ... but you make them strangely bearable. ❞

kazuha almost forgot that ren never had met umi before, or at least he hadn't properly introduced him to ren. but he had a feeling that umi would like ren, all kinds of animals seem to like ren and seek him out for comfort. including himself.
kazuha can't help but feel warm and fuzzy inside when ren offers him the little orange tabby cat called haruki. even if umi has made himself comfortable in his scarf and laying half over his shoulder where he would share kazuha's body heat. feeling the vibrations of umi's purring.
watching the black cat called michio getting all comfortable in ren's arms warms him even more.
❝ it would be an honour to join you for dinner on this day ❞
with warm and a loving look kazuha watches everything right in front of him. it's funny how about a year ago he was nervously handing ren an invitation to go to the lantern rite with him. their first date. and how nervous he was about asking him out as his feelings were becoming more clear to him. and it was scary. he never thought he would be in a relationship let alone get married and that the clan would die with him. but somewhere along this journey, ren changes his view, even if he doesn't know it. no matter what the future holds kazuha knows that he isn't alone in this endless journey anymore and he now can share the beauty that's teyvat with his to-be-husband.
❝ do you want help with cooking, or do you want to cook yourself? ❞
he wouldn't mind either as kazuha would be able to watch ren cook and prepare a delicious meal with hands that even if they are delicate looking could cause serious damage at the same time.
but something about cooking together made kazuha have a strong feeling of love and affection for ren, it was them being domestic with each other as if they where already been married for years. they would do this even before kazuha proposed which back then had him thinking he was overstepping a boundary.
❝ ... so that is your cat. ❞ the wanderer hums, watching the reunion with undisguised AMUSEMENT. kazuha is an individual with a staggering number of redeeming qualities — albeit in his ( rightfully ) biased opinion. that his gentle heart reserves a particular place of utmost fondness for FELINES is one of them. ❝ i had a feeling he looked familiar. ❞ he spares the carving one final glance before pressing it to his chest — wherein it disappears in a flash of electro-hued light. idly, the wanderer wonders if there might be a place in THE TEAPOT for it. such a work of art surely deserves to be put on display, both because he finds the look of it appealing ... but also ( unsurprisingly ) because it has been carefully crafted by the hands of his most beloved person, and ren is PAINFULLY TRANSPARENT in his bias.
a chorus of mews suddenly catch his attention, and the wanderer tips his head back, blinking quizzically at the sight that greets him. ❝ ... ❞ he reaches up, gently plucking the tiny orange feline from the branch. he's the most rambunctious of the cats that have decided to keep him COMPANY today, curious eyes and paws ready to bat at anything that catches his attention. he wiggles around in the wanderer's grip for a moment, making himself comfortable. after giving enough scratches beneath the chin to quiet his fidgeting, ren carefully hands the orange tabby over to kazuha. ❝ this is haruki. ❞ he says — in the same casual tone of one introducing an acquaintance or a coworker.
picking up the black cat, the second feline is considerably less fussy. admittedly, his aloof personality reminds ren a bit of HIMSELF. ( which certainly doesn't help stem the flow of cat comparisons. ) ❝ ... and this one is michio. ❞ who appears to be falling fast asleep. what strange creatures.
❝ ... i don't suppose you'd be interested in joining us for DINNER? unless you and umi had other plans. ❞
