Songs of the Summer, Part 1
Memorial day weekend has come and gone and while it's not officially not summer it sure does feel like it (it's about 85 degrees over here). So what follows is just a few songs that will likely dominate my summer listening. Enjoy
Icona Pop - I Love It

This classically trained musician does an amazing cover of one of my favorite (and really one of the best) songs from last year.

6 Years Ago Today (May 2, 2012, Part 1)
Really 6 years ago last week, so I'll be putting up a double dose of musical nostalgia for dat ass
The week of April 17-23, 2006
My top artist: X-Ray Spex
My top album: Orange Juice - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever
My top track: Voxtrot - The Start Of Something
R.I.P. Poly Styrene
Pretty sure I was writing some shitty paper about feminism in punk rock (not for lack of effort, just not a very good writer), inspired in large part by the X-Ray Spex and specifically "Oh Bondage Up Yours!"
The first time I heard it I was completely blown away. At the time, I thought THIS is what punk music should be. There was a palpable sense of rage from Poly Styrene's voice, and her screechy voice was the icing on the cake.
Although my reaction to their album Germ Free Adolescents wasn't as enthusiastic, I'll still always have "Oh Bondage Up Yours!"
Now for something a quite bit different. The jangly guitar pop of Orange Juice was exactly what I was looking for at the time when exploring the foundations of twee and indie pop music. While The Smiths, and to a lesser extent, the Television Personalities became my go to in this regard. I can't really deny that You Can't Hide Your Love Forever is an excellent album. I think I may go listen to it after I finish writing this.
Voxtrot is one of my favorite bands of all time. Period. If this song doesn't do it for you, just move on there's nothing to see here. The first time I listened to this song, thanks to an internet friend of mine who recommended it, I knew I was in love.
Sadly, they broke up in 2011. They just seemed like another in a long line of 00s bands that excelled in the EP format, and rushed out a debut LP.
Their lead singer, as well as the rest of the band members, have new projects out I believe, but I don't think I'll ever feel about them the way I do about Voxtrot though.

If you’re out tonight, I’m formatting my hard drive into FAAT-32, but baby we could maybe play with the cables.
