"What we want" by Linda Pastan
What we want
is never simple.
We move among the things
we thought we wanted:
a face, a room, an open book
and these things bear our names—
now they want us.
But what we want appears
in dreams, wearing disguises.
We fall past,
holding out our arms
and in the morning
our arms ache.
We don’t remember the dream,
but the dream remembers us.
It is there all day
as an animal is there
under the table,
as the stars are there
even in full sun.

Hadrian's Deathbed Poem (trans. W.S. Merwin, alt. trans Lord Byron)
Thou little, wandering, witching thing, / My guest, companion, on the wing! / But know’st thou where? once fled from me, / Lone, pallid, naked, cold thou’lt be, / And jest no more with sprightly glee.

do you ever think about how tragic it is that mitch marner's birthday is may 5th so basically every year of his adult life he's had the same chaos and stress surrounding it. when was the last time he had a happy birthday? I just want him to have a happy birthday.
