The entire root of the misconception that Menhera romanticizes self harm lies in a lack of context for the images outsiders are seeing in glances and an unwillingness to listen to people within the community telling them constantly what that context is. We are not trying to say that self harm and depression are cute. We’re saying that we’re depressed, that we self harm, and that WE are cute. That doing our makeup and wearing perfectly outlined pastel coordinates doesn’t mean we aren’t suffering. This is a movement to achieve self acceptance and to create visibility for mental health issues (specifically in Japan- but westerners want this too, our struggles are just different.)

What makes this misconception that much harder to disprove is the fact that, with an increase in popularity, more and more of these outsiders are introduced into the community and, rather than brand us all problematic and block our tag on sight, they start misappropriating our words and filling menhera spaces with legitimate glorification of self harm. Menhera is not a word for “EDGY.”

Please for the love of god. We’re just trying to share information, style, art, music. If you don’t actually know what you’re talking about, stop talking. Leave us alone!
