"Magnificent, Malign, Misunderstood."
Tumblr media
Sharks have been on Earth for approximately 400 million years, evolving to become the apex predator in our oceans - until man came along.
For centuries, sharks have been widely feared because of the occasional attacks on humans who enter their aquatic world. Media sensationalism has also portrayed these amazing aquatic beings as vicious and ravenous man-eaters.
Not many people are aware that sharks play a crucial role in keeping our oceans healthy and abundant. Most sharks serve as top predators at the peak of the marine food pyramid, thus playing a critical role in regulating the natural balance of ocean ecosystems.
Sharks are responsible for 8 to 10 human deaths worldwide per year.
But humans are responsible for approximately 70 million shark deaths every year.
Sharks grow slowly and produce few young, much like marine mammals - and are therefore more susceptible to overexploitation.
Overfishing is driving sharks to the brink, with many populations down to 80%. Tens of millions are killed each year for their meat, fins, liver, and other products.
By-catch (catching sharks incidentally while fishing for other commercial species) poses a significant threat to sharks. In addition, new markets for shark products are blurring the line between targeted and accidental catches.
Finning involves removing shark fins and discarding the often still alive shark at sea. Shark fins usually fetch a much higher price than shark meat, providing an economic incentive for this wasteful and indefensible practice. Finning is often associated with shark overfishing, especially as keeping only the fins allow fishermen to kill many more sharks in a trip than if they were required to bring back the entire animal.
A change in public perception, from one that we need to protect humans from sharks to one where we must protect sharks from humans, is a significant starting point in ensuring that the future of our oceans is not void of these vital and magnificent beings.
This is only the beginning. Raising awareness and conservation efforts are not only limited to protecting sharks.
Together, our intelligence and awareness can enable us to lead a global change and be responsible for the stewardship of our Ocean Planet.

If I have one hope, it is that we will come to appreciate and protect these wonderful animals before we manage, through ignorance, stupidity, and greed, to wipe them out altogether.

My journey begins
Tumblr media
I feel it in the icy gusts of the southerly wind; I sense it in the days of sunshine and blue skies gradually trimmed by the approaching winter. These early signs seem as if they are the harbinger of another cold winter. But, this winter will be different.
Almost exactly a year ago, not only did I overcome one of my biggest fears, I also discovered my passion for something so fascinatingly beautiful that seems so untouchable and resilient - but is in fact something so delicate and fragile.
Being a new and enthusiastic diver, it is impossible for me not to fall in love with, and be completely enchanted by the breathtaking underwater world. Within the brief time since discovering the underwater realm, I have been overwhelmingly inspired with the desire to protect our oceans and the amazing marine life that exists within.
This winter, I will be joining a Shark Conservation project in Fiji.
One of the many reasons I am participating in this project is to learn, support, and contribute to shark conservation and research efforts. Another profound reason is to raise local and global awareness on the significance of ocean conservation and how the health of our oceans is linked to our daily lives.
To be part of the solution to this problem, is where my passion in ocean conservation and research stems from.
