“I would like to be a guardian angel! I could live forever…imagine what boundless youth I could achieve…!” With that thought, he glances up to the night sky. Phenomenal. Nothing could quite compare to the glittery patterns in a dark blue sky, in stark contrast to the silhouette of the landscape.
Decisively, Gai unwraps the scarf around them, but only to lay his back flat on the ground. With his hands folded across his stomach and the expanse of the night filling his vision, the jounin found himself unusually contemplative.
Killers can’t quite be guardian angels, he thinks. He doesn’t label himself as one, but he still had blood in his hands and in the end that makes him stained enough to fit in that category, despite everything. But the closest he could get to being a guardian angel, perhaps, would be taking care of someone like the younger sibling he never had. And damn did he get close.
“It’s more beautiful here than in Konoha.”
“it’s definitely more beautiful here, than in kiri, too.it’s always so cloudy there...”
the breeze caressing her cheeks and sweeping her hair up into a dance that surrounded her. nights in suna were cold, but they were prettier than anything she’d ever seen. so clear... and the stars were so bright.
maybe she’d pick a favourite one. knowing her, it would be the odd one... the lonely star. it would have unique beauty, but she wouldn’t treat it as any less than the other stars. no matter what the astronomers say.
carried away in her thoughts, they drew back to kisame.
miru had to wonder... had he ever been able to see a sky like this?
had he ever taken the time to stop and think that maybe
he deserved to take what was willingly given to him by the world?
her smile didn’t falter, her deeper emotions masked by the indestructible joy and pride that she felt for getting this far. she just wished that she could’ve shown him this. maybe he’d feel happy. truly happy. if only just a little bit.
“gai-san, what do you think happens to us when we die?”

“It’s fine!” He replies quickly, not wanting to change their position. He had grown too comfortable with the warmth where she leaned on him; now a cool breeze brushes past where she had previously leaned on but now relocated. But it’s all good. No trivial thing could shadow the little victory they achieved that afternoon.
“You did well today. I’m proud!”
proud. he was proud.
scooping her knees up to her chest, miru felt a flood of red touch at every part of her face. she didn’t often get embarrassed or flustered, but hearing somebody say such a kind thing to her was so surreal. he was helping her through the toughest thing she was sure she’d ever experience, and because of that, she’d been able to progress in her rehabilitation faster than she could have thought possible. because of him, she could walk with hardly any assistance; a feat that wasn’t supposed to be for at least another three years. (if at all.)
“thank you, gai-san.”
a big smile, which she tried to hide with her arms.
