I miss my mom

she's not dead, and she didn't leave

but she doesn't listen when I call for her, lucky I am to see her even out of bed

I miss when she would take me for a drive just because we can, and we'd stop in the sunflower fields to collect the seeds and toss them like confetti. I miss when she would throw extravagant birthday parties, even if no one came. I miss waking up in the middle of the night to watch Ramona and Beezus with her, and she would always let me. And she would bring me to the garden of butterflies and tell me I was the prettiest girl in the world, even if I were crying so hard you couldn't see my face.

I miss when she would play videos my dad sent from Afghanistan, and she would let me dress up in glittery fairy wings to perform for him, even though I never knew he couldn't see me through the TV screen. All I had was her, and all she had was me. Even when he did come back eventually.

And if I broke down in kindergarten, she never stopped to question it, and she would come get me for lunch, and we would get ice cream and watch the clouds until I felt better enough to go back. And if it rained in warm weather we would lay outside in it, clothes and all. Because I thought we knew each other, and we felt the same.

I miss when she would read to me, and surprise me with new casettes for my mother goose casette player. I miss when I wasn't responsible for all her children, and when I wasn't forgotten until I were useful. I wish I had been a better role model for them, even if I couldn't have known any better. Even if it was never my job to be their second mother, I'll always regret being so angry with them for something that wasn't their fault.

I miss when I could be loved without payment. Now it's too late to go back to those summers where I was cared for and remembered. How much I miss being taken care of, even just a little.

People underestimate how much it fucks you up to be subtly excluded as a kid. I would try to talk to my classmates and be met with disinterest or annoyance. The one friend I had, who I clung to and nodded along to his every word, had other friends he liked just as much or more. And his other friends didn’t care for me at all.

I look back at pictures from the time and see how separated I was from them. I remember knowing I was different. I remember posing questions about the world to the girls playing next to me and realizing that they had never asked the same ones to themselves. That the ways we thought couldn’t be more different.

I kept myself amused with my own fanatical stories and musings in my head. I would wander the playground on a circular path, imagining a friend and being sorely disappointed when it didn’t feel as real as I’d hoped.

There was a bubble separating me from everyone else, thin, and nearly invisible, but with a pearly sheen you could catch under the right conditions. I knew it was there, they knew it was there, and it changed me
