Except... that's not what's on tiktok....
Like, most of the news coverage I see there is thoughtful, rational, and expressed by people of varying backgrounds.
The comment regarding news sources is that there's a glaring difference between what information is held back by the algorithm on US owned social media v.s. not US owned social media.
It's well documented that Facebook, f.ex., will limit the reach of posts and information depending on US interests. The assumption being used to justify the tiktok ban is that China is doing Exactly what the US is doing via Facebook, Instagram, etc, etc, etc... except since China's doing it, it won't suppress information that's uncomfortable to the US.
What American teenagers on tiktok are talking about is the cost of living crisis that's been ongoing in the us for literal decades, the corruption in American politics, the minimum wage, housing, etc, etc...
American Teenagers on tiktok are talking about the importance of unions.... it's incredibly Beautiful to witness.
The thing is that that doesn't align with US corporate interests... which is what the ban is about.
And that's not good at all... it's really, really, really bad.
TBH I think that the idea that tiktok is just dances and lipsync is a narrative used to undermine this. To push the idea that tiktok is the wrong place to learn about the world, your own country, and all that jazz, because it's so cringe makes it easier to get away with taking the information away from people.
It's not a good take.
The more I hear "The US government is banning TikTok because 30% of teenagers in the US are getting your news from the tiktok algorithm, this ban is leaving impressionable teenagers without any news sources they can trust", the more I think "good".
I mean, it could be an elaborate troll, maybe. I don't know. But if you really get your news about international from American teenagers lip syncing to a song and pointing at the air where screenshotted headlines are superimposed, then maybe touching grass will be good for you.

... look... I just want to be able to pick up literally every item in a game...
I have gotten my carrying capacity in Nightingale up past a literal metric ton.
I can carry 1.101 kilos of stuff.
That's 2.427 lbs for those who don't use sensible measuring systems.

I had this idea for a silhouetted chicken ages ago and finally found time to finish it.
If you love the fluffy dinosaurs we still have you can find this on Redbubble, Teepublic, and Threadless

It occurs to me that as much as “humans are the scary ones” fits sometimes, if you look at it another way, humans might seem like the absurdly friendly or curious ones.
I mean, who looked at an elephant, gigantic creature thoroughly capable of killing someone if it has to, and thought “I’m gonna ride on that thing!”?
And put a human near any canine predator and there’s a strong chance of said human yelling “PUPPY!” and initiating playful interaction with it.
And what about the people who look at whales, bigger than basically everything else, and decide “I’m gonna swim with our splashy danger friends!”
Heck, for all we know, humans might run into the scariest, toughest aliens out there and say “Heck with it. I’m gonna hug ‘em.”
“Why?!”
“I dunno. I gotta hug ‘em.”
And it’s like the first friendly interaction the species has had in forever so suddenly humanity has a bunch of big scary friends.

My little book club is reading His Dark Materials and daemons came up while my betrothed and I were cuddling in bed.
They said to me, “Do you think anyone’s daemon is a mosquito?”
“What? No way, that’s way too small!”
“No,” they countered, “We see beetles and butterflies, Pan turned into a little lightning bug, and a moth.”
I digested this information in silence, and then my betrothed started shaking with laughter and pitched in two different voices. “‘Where’s your daemon?’ ‘Oh, it’s a tick.’”
I let out such a guttural sound of amusement and horror that I scared the cats. I couldn’t stop laughing and repeating, “It’S a TiCk!!!”
I escalated in hilarity to choking out, “The only blood it can eat is it’s own persons! They JusT gO aRouNd with a TiCk on their face!”
“I don’t think daemons need to eat, do they?” They asked.
“IT’S A tIcK!!” I responded, tears rolling down my face, hyperventilating at the best and worst concept I’d ever imagined.

Like it cannot be overstated how collective change is built by a collection of small, sustained individual actions. You giving what you can to one person, you helping one person when you can, you communicating with one person, sharing with one person, everything, it all adds up. That is how we build community. Its not big and dramatic and all at once. It is mundane but continuous.
