A while ago, someone asked me for a Jeongin fic where ‘he has a noona kink’.
I didn’t know if I should laugh or puke.
Let me explain.
Because honestly, the person who requested was definitely not from a culture where using honorifics to address people older than you is basic courtesy. They probably don’t realise the significance of these honorifics.
At first, I wanted to explain to this anon that they were the one with the noona kink; people who come from cultures which use honorifics excessively do not EVER find them remotely sexy. No. Really, trust me, I’m from one such culture.
And then, I realised there was a deeper issue.
I can’t help but see noona/oppa kinks as a form of cultural fetishisation.
Like, my friend is dating this cutie a year younger than her, and he calls her didi out of habit, not as a kink. It’s awfully disconcerting when a foreigner - someone who doesn’t realise the significance and meaning of the words they are using - turn an honorific into a kink/fetishise it.
Please don’t. You don’t know what it is like to use honorifics. It is hella creepy. I mean, if a foreigner asked me to call them akka/anna/didi/bhaiya specifically as a turn on during sex, I’d get the fuck away from them because eww.
Yeah, we talk a lot about racial fetishisation, but fixating over titles from a foreign culture is a sort of unhealthy cultural fetishisation, too. It is awfully uncomfortable.
Honorifics aren’t the same as sexualised titles. Please DON’T.
Any writers, if you see this, please share and take heed; please try to incorporate this into your writing. I’m sure kpopie writers on tumblr are as understanding as they seem, and I hope we can stop encouraging unhealthy fixations of this sort.
