Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:
"It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.
"There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.
"If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the 'medicine closet' and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That's why you should always have a nutrition choice!
"Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity."

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix Series) -- Season 1
Began watching: April 5, 2024
Finished watching: April 6, 2024
My rating: 5 stars
Tumblr media
I'm gonna be honest. I was skeptical of watching this at first. I wasn't an avid fan of ATLA the animated series growing up. I'd watch and enjoy it, but it wasn't my go-to show.
However, I was hooked from the beginning in this series, and it has left me wanting even more. I'm seriously impatiently waiting for the next season (so you know I'm gonna be watching the OG ATLA series now!).
I loved the costuming and sets. It reminds me of what I saw in the show and was just aesthetically pleasing as well. The casting fit the idea of the show and the original series.
You couldn't push me into picking a favorite episode. I really enjoyed the beginning and seeing the relationships Aang had with his fellow airbenders, especially Gyatso. Katara's growth as a water bender was fun to watch, especially when she confronted Master Pakku about the Northern Water Tribe's traditions. Omashu was an interesting place for the group to visit; Bumi in particular was an interesting character here. In every episode, I really enjoy seeing Sokka, Aang, and Katara develop as characters individually and collectively. They have already come to really rely on each other and work together well, while also developing their own "fighting style" more and more.
Iroh has to be my favorite character so far. Compared to Ozai, he's emotional and very clearly attached to his nephew, sticking up for Zuko to others. It's so evident how much he cares about Zuko and tries to get him to see that there's a better way of doing things. I'm hopeful that Zuko realizes that Iroh is more of a father/dad to him than his own father is and has been; I want to just reach through the screen and shake some sense into him because from everything Iroh does, I can see him more of a father-figure to Zuko than Ozai.
I really enjoyed the storyline, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it compares to the original animated series. I'll likely do a comparison once I've finished the series! Be on the look out for upcoming posts about the animated ATLA series!

I liked the idea of Bumi beng exhausted because of all of the decisions he's had to made as king, especially because of the war. Like the whole "who gets the food, the orphans or the soldiers" thing. I think it was a really interesting struggle to give him.
But that doesn't take away the fact that he's taking all of this resentment out on a fucking child that spent the last 100 years on a block of ice and that just found out his entire people have been murdered and that he needs to save the world.
Dude, you're literally beefing with a 12 year old who has done nothing.

Barbarian's Prize
Started reading: March 21, 2024
Finished reading: March 21, 2024
My rating: 5 stars
TLDR: I loved this book immensely for the MMC's treatment and care of the MFC.
Tumblr media
I'm going to start this out by saying this book, fifth in the series, has been my favorite of the Ice Planet Barbarian books by Ruby Dixon. I've enjoyed reading the entire series, but this one takes the cake for me.
Before I continue, there are mentions and discussions of Tiffany's trauma. Dixon includes multiple nightmares of Tiffany, which detail what happened to her on the ship after being abducted. Some of the guard aliens sexually assault her, and it's discussed throughout most of the book.
The main male character, Salukh, is one of the big blue alien hunters on this planet the human girls refer to as "Not-Hoth." He's immensely interested in Tiffany, the human focus of this particular book. But so are several other single male hunters.
If you haven't read any of the other books in this series, the girls are abducted and left on this planet by these aliens. They manage to escape with the help of the natives to the planet (big blue aliens with horns). The natives have a symbiote, a "khui," which keeps them alive in the harsh cold conditions. To survive on this planet (and avoid the aliens who abducted them when they return), the group of girls must also have a khui. This khui acts like a soulmate matchmaker, essentially.
Up to this point, nearly all the girls are "matched up," but Josie and Tiffany are the only ones left single. A few of the hunters continuously express interest in Tiffany and leave her gifts (like a hunted animal for her to eat). This all makes her feel uncomfortable, but she doesn't feel like she can say something and still feel safe.
Salukh watches from afar and interacts with her differently. He announces himself each time he approaches. He actively helps her out (ie, with her farming) with the things she's interested in, and he creates a relationship with her that she feels is friendship, a place of trust.
As she asks for his help, he (after much consideration) decides to help. The trust and closeness grow between them.
This is the bulk of the story, and I can't say enough about Salukh's treatment of Tiffany. Like I was swooning so much. He's protective of her and looks out for her even when he doesn't necessarily have permission to. He helps her with her crops and gifts her with an unnecessary gift, uncommon in their culture. He thinks about her when he's hunting.
This is what made me really love the story. It didn't feel repetitive, and there weren't many parts (until the end) that felt unnecessary to the story. These were some issues I had with some of the previous books in the series, and I'm glad this one was one I loved.
10 out of 10, would recommend.

Lilo & Stitch is a great example of a story that has no villains. It has antagonists, sure, but most of them are well-meaning. The worst person in the film is that little shit Myrtle, but she’s not in the film that much anyway.

Resting Scrooge Face

(Spoilers below the cut, so proceed with caution!)
This story was a little slow to start, and I was a little confused how the story would go with the description. It became clearer in the first chapter, as opposed to the introduction.
I picked this up because I wanted to read a Christmas romance, and it definitely delivered. Two people who seemingly hate Christmas are in the same small town, surrounded by people who love the season and want them to be a part of the holiday cheer festivities. These two are adamant in their hatred of Christmas, however, and it’s only exacerbated by the other’s presence in town. Honestly, this screams Hallmark movie.
The pair send each other anonymous letters signed “Resting Scrooge Face” and “Ho Ho No.” The mailman delivers their letters, and he’s the only one (seemingly!) who knows the real identities of the two parties involved.
The chapters are brief and have some concentrated action and dialogue. However, the places where we can read the letters the pair are actually sending each other tend to be slower. It got to the point in one particular chapter that I had to set it aside and stop reading for a bit. It never got to the point where I got turned off by either of these, so it felt like I could keep reading.
By the end, I was absolutely in love with the story. It was worth having to trudge through a sort of slow introduction and long string of letters.
Honestly, what sealed the deal for me was when she asked to meet “Resting Scrooge Face.” AND HE AGREES!!! But she doesn’t find out until after she (Nola/Ho Ho No) runs into him (Caleb/Resting Scrooge Face) where he works at his dad’s hardware store. He shows up at her doorstep with the paint she wanted (after dropping it and spilling it all over himself AND the floor), offers to help her paint, and refuses to take no for an answer. He’s kind and cordial throughout the time, even making her reminisce about the past. They just open up to each other and joke around. It’s really sweet. When Caleb leaves, Nola is torn because she realizes she’s really catching feelings for Caleb again while already having feelings for Resting Scrooge Face.
It was at the hardware store that Caleb realized that Nola was Ho Ho No, when she handed the distinct gold envelop to Arden, the town’s mailman. Hence why he drops the can of paint he struggled to open to mix for Nola. Arden waits for Caleb to clean up, mix a new paint can for Nola, and write a response. The response comes to Nola while she and Caleb are painting in her house she’s renovating.
This story was similar to You’ve Got Mail, one of my absolute favorite movies, and I think that’s why I enjoyed this story so much. Like, I loved that Caleb found out who she was first, not unlike Joe Fox, and I love that both Joe and Caleb work to get the woman they want to fall for them by essentially not taking no for an answer. Joe keeps popping up around Kathleen and keeps the interactions lighthearted and fun (more or less). Caleb spends the time painting with Nola talking and joking with her, leading to some vulnerability. And both Nola and Kathleen are torn between who they want more and are relieved when it’s Caleb/Joe.
Not to mention the little twist at the end ;)

One of my favorite parts of the Hunger Games was how, in the beginning, Katniss was jealous amd resentful of the townies for not having to work in the coal mines. Then, over time, she realizes they aren't the true enemy. Then she sees the other district kids as so much better off than she is, because at least they don't come from district 12. But then she realizes they aren't the enemy either. And then she hates the other victors, before realizing they have all been exploited just as much as she has. So the enemy must be the Capitol citizens, who benefit from the exploitation of the districts, right? Wrong again. They are just uninformed and pampered people who have been kept in the dark about the true horrors faced by the rest of the country. Most of them, when push comes to shove, are perfectly willing to help the war efforts.
And slowly, over the three books, all theses separate factions of downtrodden people start to see each other as allies instead of enemies, and that is what propells them to eventual victory over the true enemy, the government that tried to pit them against each other. Just fun, totally fictional things to think about that have nothing whatsoever to do with our current life.

Not to be that person but I feel like sometimes Shrek being so memeable prevents people from seeing how truly revolutionary and radical the first two films really were. A children’s fairy tale that argues that no, ugliness does not mean bad and beautiful does not mean good. A fairy tale that argues that everyone deserves love, even those cast out of the margins of society. A fairy tale that dares to have a female protagonist not be conventionally attractive or helpless. A fairy tale that argues that love does not happen at first sight, but is grown through mutual respect and interest. That’s pretty fucking sick if you ask me
