But he was only looking at the boy standing alone on the edge of the porch, tear stains on his face, and clutching a small piece of fabric like it was a lifeline. Upon closer examination, Hermie saw that it was a jaggedly-cut piece of a vibrantly green sweater. Hermie’s sweater. The last one he’d ever worn.

It was enough, he told himself. It was enough to see Normal, to know he was safe and okay, to lay eyes on his best friend even if Normal didn't see him in return. Hermie would go back to hell, and try not to want to die, and spend the rest of his life picturing his friend's face in the dark. It was enough. It had to be enough.
