azula-antis are so quick to bring up "turtleduck abuse" as a reason to hate her just bc zuko "copied" azula & chucked bread at them when the REAL turtleduck abuser has been under our noses this whole time
Tumblr media
toph is the real monster here
This is not a real Turtleduck, it has no legs and is stiff. It's just a toy.

Zuko teaching Aang abt patience & maturity??
Tumblr media
also... culture? what culture?? Fire Nation culture??? he teaches Aang how to commit war crimes & colonize????
A while ago I read about a headcanon about the Air Nomads don't actually have a problem killing people but that Aang was a kid who doesn't know all about his people and that Zuko having traveled to the temples (ignoring of course that his ass wouldn't have the patience to read about Air Nation culture nor would the genocide army would leave much behind mind you) so he would teach and preach to Aang telling him all about his culture
I hate this fandom fanatism on Zuko reaching into practically Xenophobia for the other characters

13 year old Zuko: it's my duty as crown prince to join war meetings and learn war strategy to contribute to the war effort
fandom: aw such an adorable turtleduck
14 year old Azula: it's my duty as princess to contribute to the war effort by fighting on the front lines
fondom: she is the literal embodiment of hitler
You know, it never ceases to amaze me how some people believe that Azula was coordinating the campaign in the Earth Kingdom when Zuko being invited in during a war meeting at the age of 13 was considered to be abnormal in universe.

iroh was kinda crazy for letting his 17-yr old nephew run an entire country fresh out of a war that he and his little kid friends had to end because the adults were so nonplussed about the big bad's incoming world domination. just protected his peace and ran his tea shop as if his banished nephew was at all equipped to be in the world's most critical political position after the previous guy almost razed every man woman and child to the ground. mind you iroh STAYED bitching about his 14-yr old niece like it was out of his hands to have beef with a literal child

"azula is an angry wet cat" is an apt description for her
Azula's Play Fighting With Ty Lee
In Azula in the Spirit Temple, Azula thinks this is the real Ty Lee:
Tumblr media
As expected, Azula's first instinct is to incinerate her non-bending enemy with the full force and fury of her flames, right?
Tumblr media
No, she just stands there in a halfhearted fighting stance, asking simple questions. Then she gives Ty Lee advice for Ty Lee's own good, and warns Ty Lee about the creepy monk, for Ty Lee's own safety:
Tumblr media
Then Azula demands Ty Lee pay attention to her so they can fight, rather than Azula just starting the fight herself:
Tumblr media
Azula makes halfhearted kicks and punches instead of her signature ranged firebending attacks, still not incinerating Ty Lee, and making catty remarks while doing so:
Tumblr media
She goes hand-to-hand with Ty Lee, still not incinerating her, and makes yet more catty remarks:
Tumblr media
She even stops fighting for a moment to go on a monologue, not afraid of Ty Lee, the chi blocker, Ty Lee, the martial artist, Ty Lee, the traitor who is known to attack Azula while she is not paying attention:
Tumblr media
And when Ty Lee really pisses her off, she finally incinerates her with a fiery blast to the chest that burns through Ty Lee's armor and chars her to the bone. Right?
Lol, no. She just kicks her hard:
Tumblr media
And she ties up Ty Lee while she is unconscious rather than plunge a fire dagger into her chest, then sits on the floor next to her unconscious friend, feeling bad:
Tumblr media
And when Ty Lee awakes, Azula cares an awful lot about what a "loser" and "fan dancer" thinks about her:
Tumblr media
She even folds her arms across her chest, turns away, and pouts. No more fists, no more flames, no more fighting. The fighting didn't even help. She's still mad and she wants Ty Lee to be mad too.
No wonder Azula gives off angry wet cat vibes in this comic. She's acting like one.
But she'll be back later for her tuna, once she feels she has adequately punished her owners by denying them her presence for most of the day.

Zuko and Mai at the Boiling Rock
I had the luxury of seeing a post that said that the eye contact between Mai and Zuko when he locks her up in the cell that he was in was a form of abuse on Mai's end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That scene. Now, I don't know how in the ever loving fuck do you see this scene and the take away that you gain from it is "Mai was abusing Zuko with her eyes. It's the gaze I tell you" and I honestly don't want to know. I mean really, what are you supposed to even call this, eye abuse??? There was nothing abusive about the way she was looking at him, or how she spoke to him in this scene. Do you know what I see in Mai's eyes? Anger. Hurt. Confusion. Anger that Zuko is betraying their nation, that he broke up with her via letter. Hurt that instead of confiding in her like couples do, he chose to keep her in the dark, even though it was for her own safety, as we hear from Zuko himself when he says to Sokka "I couldn't drag her into it". Finally, confusion because she doesn't understand why Zuko is doing this. For as long as Mai could remember, Zuko's only goal was to capture the avatar so that he could return home and regain his honor. And he finally got his wish, only to throw it all away in the end. Now of course to Mai this wouldn't make sense, because she hasn't had the same experiences that Zuko had during his 3 years of being banished.
Some people also say that Zuko couldn't take Mai with him because she would have made things more difficult, would have tried to stop him, called the guards or Azula, etc. I think that this is a misunderstanding of her character, because going by how quick she was to join Azula in Omashu, before she even knew what the mission was? She more than likely would have left with Zuko. She loved him, after all. Not to mention that from what we saw, Mai really didn't care all that much about the war, if at all. All she really cared about was Zuko. So if he told her that he was planning on leaving? Mai would have abandoned ship with him.

zuko breaking up with mai via a letter is our modern-day version of breaking up with someone via text message. zuzu should be glad mai didn't chuck a cell phone at his head
(even if she did, it would still be justified & hilarious)
Idk how anyone can see this scene as abusive, it will never not be funny to me 🤣

what are your thoughts of Iroh becoming the fire lord instead of Zuko ??
On the surface, it definitely makes more sense than Zuko becoming Firelord. However, just about everything we know about Iroh's character suggests he would be terrible Firelord: irresponsible, hedonistic, full of unrecognized imperialist ideas, lazy, and self righteous. It might end very poorly.

...well, I haven't talked about the comics for a hot minute so...here's my thoughts on the central theme of Smoke and Shadow: fear.
Disregarding the sheer amount of how badly the characters are butchered, about how Yang seems to disregard canon just so he can make his own fanfic, the basic theme of the comic is fear. He's talked about it in interviews. It's a running theme for characters to talk about how they're afraid. You could even argue that Azula's main motivation in the comic is a flanderization of her quote on fear.
I will be the first to admit that I'm no stranger to fear. I have high levels of anxiety and I have a tendency to get worried or scared very easily. So being afraid is nothing new to me.
With that said...Smoke and Shadow's message about fear is asinine.
The basic message seems to be is that the thing you fear isn't worth getting afraid over. That it's not worth the hassle. We see this with Zuko declaring he's not gonna be like Azula or Ozai at the very end. Or how Ozai pathetically screams at Ursa to fear him. And yes. There are some things that aren't exactly worth getting worked up over or dwell on for the rest of your life.
But that's not what's going on here. If that were the case, why does Zuko insist on Azula being some kind of hellspawn and being "put in her place"? What exactly does Ursa's speech to Ozai accomplish? Really? Especially since we go from someone who is scared of his photo to standing up for herself with almost no development in between?
Which makes me wonder...does Yang not understand what fear is?
Fear and anxiety come from nowhere. More often than not, they're the result of something that really shaped someone as a person. Or perhaps as some primal instinct passed down from generation to generation.
Yet Ursa is never shown gradually coming to grips with what Ozai did to her. We also never see Zuko struggle with his fears about becoming his father, just more about Azula and what she's up to. And neither really grow at the end of the story aside from saying they're gonna do better.
I'm sorry, but coping with fear isn't that easy. It's a gradual process, understanding what makes you afraid and coming to grips with it. Knowing where the anxiety comes from and how to properly address it. It's complex and differs from person to person. And it's never. Simple.
With how pathetic Ozai is portrayed in his final scene and how minute the development for Zuko and Ursa were...I kind of think the real message was "Fear is a choice". Which is NEVER the answer. Fear is real, and you don't choose to be afraid. It's a natural response to when you feel threatened. And often, there is something concrete at the root of it like I mentioned before.
Instead, Ursa just chooses not to be afraid of Ozai anymore, ignoring that A. she's talking from a position of power and B. it doesn't address the pain she went through. And while Zuko chooses to be a more benevolent Fire Lord...he has a habit in the comics of saying things he doesn't mean nor does it actually ACT on his words. And it's STILL not addressing his real issues of growing up under Ozai and he's STILL blaming Azula for everything.
You can't choose to be afraid. But you can choose to address it, lest you become somebody you're not.

there's a weird chunk of post war azula fics where she's chained like an animal and have to pay for the war acts of fire nation by herself and i guess being a fire lord and stopping the war washed all sins on zuko's hands and iroh gets to roam the earth kingdom freely and basically putting all those responsibilities on a sixteen year old boy who doesn't know how to run a country

azula turns into a werewolf
Less modern au's where Zuko and Azula are the popular kids and more modern au's where the both of them are socially awkward nerds who only have 3 friends and one of them is each other.
