Tarot Notes #02 <3

A compilation of tarot notes based on my experience and observations as a tarot reader.

🍃 Want to try tarot but you don't have a tarot deck yet? You can use a website that pick items from a list (eg; randomresult.com). Simply key in all the tarot card names, ask a question, shuffle as many times as you feel needed and bam. You got the cards. Now all you have to do is search up the meaning on google!

🍃 A good way to work on your intuition is to just write down whatever comes to mind, no matter how much you think it doesn't resonate or how insignificant you think it is.

🍃 Adding onto the above, there's been so many times where I hesitated on writing something down in a reading but I did anyway and that something that I thought was insignificant or didn't resonate ended up resonating so well with the client.

🍃 Tarot decks can't lie to you, they're objects, how they gonna lie?

🍃 The reason readings don't resonate is because:

🍃 (a) the reader cannot connect well with the client's energy which is why it's important to find a good tarot reader for you. Finding a good tarot reader for you is like finding a friend. Naturally, you won't connect with certain people and you connect better with certain others.

🍃 (b) the client's limiting beliefs. Eg; if you don't believe or you're in doubt about the existence of your soulmate and you ask a reader who your soulmate is, then it won't resonate because you don't believe your soulmate exists. And instead of getting a reading that tells you about your soulmate, you get a reading that tells you about yourself instead.

🍃 (c) spirits messing with your reading. Most of the spirits that mess with your reading are overprotective spirit guides. They come visit you uninvited when you're trying to get cards out and if they don't like what you're doing, they'll mess with your reading.

🍃 or simply (d) the reader made mistakes like misinterpreting the cards, asking multiple different questions at the same time, using cards that aren't related to the reading (remember the too much jumper cards comment I said in my previous notes?), etc.

🍃 A tip for reading court cards; assign them to a specific theme (people, situations or the client's inner self) so that when it comes out in a reading, you won't get confused on what it represents.

🍃 If you didn't know yet; your spirit guides can get very attached to a deck that they really like. One way to find out is to connect with your spirit guides and ask if any of them are attached to this deck (treat it as a yes/no question). Some people don't read for other people with a deck that their spirit guide is attached to but ultimately, it's up to you and your spirit guide.

🍃 Also, tarot decks can have an existential crisis where they would feel very lifeless and quiet. However, they'd still be able to do readings well.

🍃 The pentacle symbol represents the 5 elements coming together; earth, air, fire, water and spirit. It's also a symbol of protection.

🍃 Did I mention that the Six of Wands is the ultimate card for success?

🍃 When the Kings/Queens + the Magician comes out during a reading, it can mean someone has a lot of power and influence over others. This can both be a good and bad thing.

🍃 When the Moon + the Magician or the Devil comes out, it can represent someone who wants or is trying to deceive you.

🍃 Eight of Swords can represent victim mentality because in most illustrations, the person is able to escape the situation if they just put a bit of effort into it but instead, they do nothing.

🍃 Don't forget that the Sun can also relate to youth, children and inner child.

🍃 The Lovers, 2 of Cups and 4 of Wands are the best cards to get for a love reading.

🍃 To me, the 2 of Cups represents soulmates.

🍃 And the 4 of Wands represents marriages (long lasting relationships), twin flames and even a past life connection.

🍃 Six of Cups can be negative in a financial or career reading, representing that you're being too childish and carefree.

🍃 Wheel of Fortune can represent someone who believes in fate and that everything happens for a reason.

🍃 Since the High Priestess represents someone full of wisdom, they could also be someone who pursues higher education or someone who had already done so.

🍃 Knight of Cups can represent a hopeless romantic.

🍃 Different publishers have different deck designs.

🍃 Tarot decks published by Llewellyn Publications have huge casings, guidebooks that have more than 250+ pages and their cards are smooth, standard size and thickness.

🍃 Liminal11 have unique casings for their decks; a magnetic box with semi-circle holes at the bottom sides and another box inside it. Some of their guidebooks are hardcover but small.

🍃 Some Lo Scarabeo tarot decks also have unique casings; their casings have a cover on the top that you can open like a jar. Their guidebooks are multilanguage and because there's limited space in the book, there's little information in them. Oh, they also give two useless extra cards.

🍃 Speaking of guidebooks, reversal meanings are not much talked about in guidebooks and I don't like that.

🍃 Anyway, Rockpool Publishing has published the most amount of gorgeous decks. You can't fight me on this.

🍃 Sasha Graham is a really good tarot deck author, her tarot decks have an interesting story/plot to them.

🍃 By far, the decks that give out the most amazing energy are Tarot of the Divine and White Numen.

🍃 When I use the White Numen tarot deck, it feels like I'm conversing with an actual person. I think it's the deck itself.

🍃 The Linestrider tarot deck is pretty passive and quiet (but it does readings well!). Maybe it's resting or doing some self-reflection? I don't know.

🍃 Goetia: Tarot in Darkness (aka my demon deck) is surprisingly very feminine — it introduced itself with the Empress. Also, it does amazing 18+ readings.

🍃 So far, the easiest deck for me to do intuitive tarot readings with is the Ethereal Visions Illuminated tarot deck. The imagery of the cards is just amazing and easy to work with.

To start off, I feel you’re in this new ambitious mindset that’s moving you guys forward, it’s like some of you are starting your life in a new direction or finally stepping up to own the things that go on in your life, there’s this breaking free from something energy in this pile. I’m seeing this image of two beautiful wings spreading and the words “ my self concept would eventually make me the God of my reality” beautiful pile 1. I feel this change could be a new relationship, career, school etc whatever it is I see you being in a state of joy. Like you’re saying no to your former pessimistic self and stepping into this self worth energy/ literally this god/goddess energy. I heard “no one’s going to make the life I desire for me unless I get up and do so!” There’s this assertive energy, this fresh perspective and honestly I’m living for that. Congratulations to you, go get that bag , degree or person of interest.

I just heard this loud pop right now, like damn! Y’all’s energy is regal like it demands a presence! Who are you guys? It’s like you don’t actually see that you’re good enough to achieve this goddess energy and that’s what’s holding you back. Spirits want me to say this loud and clear to you, “ YOU’RE ENOUGH”. You don’t see just how easily you can get that financial freedom or goal that you’re heading for. I’m hearing some of you have braved really dark storms and overcame them. Even with your battle scars you still command a presence, you still shine as bright as the sun and if that isn’t the definition of regal then I don’t know what is. I’m hearing you bring up really intellectual conversations that leave people amazed at how smart you actually are. “Damn they’ve probably got to have the sexiest brain I’ve ever seen” Hnnnm. I heard you get your facts checked and your t’s crossed. I also get that people who’ve seen you brave these storms view you as this determined almost like will of fire. Your assertiveness is so attractive to them and like whenever you take charge of a situation and leave everyone in the room gobsmacked, they just can’t help but feel proud of you. ( these sound like persons of interest)

I heard to get closer to your sexy side is to maintain that balanced being assertive and charming. I just heard ‘blow them away with your intellect and then end them with a smile’ it’s like keep reminding yourself you’re that b*tch, kick anxiety aside, tell that depression it has no place in your life, keep MANIFESTING and AFFIRMING the life you want. Spirits be literally yelling at me to tell you, it’s like you’ve been used to downplaying yourself and hiding in the shadows of anxiety for so long and spirits are like, ‘no not this year, you’re transforming like a butterfly in its cocoon. Now beliefs that’s have got to go is that lack of faith, stop saying ‘I just can’t, I fear failure too much’ or ‘I’m not up for the task’ child please. You know when you do something that you thought you weren’t actually able to do and then wing it at the same time? That’s exactly what’s happening here. You are perfect and I need you to ask yourself why you feel so comfortable with accepting failure? You experienced those to develop a thick skin and now it’s time to let that guard down and reap the fruit of your labor. No more darkness for you, step into that light and assert yourself. Say no to limiting thoughts or people, watch them fall back too. You are a queen! Never allow anyone to tell you otherwise, raise that chin up high! No more crying yourself to sleep okay?

To end this reading for you pile 1 is to advice you to let go of these past influences, could be from your childhood or teenage years, or even a homesick feeling. Regardless my advice is embrace that transitional growth. It’s all over now and the person responsible for you now is You!. Compared to the previous pile this piles energy feels slower and a bit confused, it’s like being stuck in planning mode for weeks, this is the pile that doesn’t rush it’s like you want the best possible results and you’d take your time to get the best possible results. You guys aren’t mostly like that, it’s cause you don’t believe in yourself. You’re the type to have a dream or a wish and keep it at that cause mentally you’ve already told yourself it’s impossible to achieve it or that you aren’t ready. So you wait till it eventually passes you by, it’s like why do you tell yourself that?. I’m hearing “oh it’s because I’m being realistic, and I see that this/that isn’t going to work out” Shut up pile 2. Look you’re not going to be a quitter or a person who folds on their dreams do you get that ? You’re a god/goddess, you don’t sit around and wait for life to just play it’s part, you’ve got to get up and assert yourself. How ? You may ask, by creating a positive self concept. You’re so used to hearing yourself say, ‘ I’m not good enough or smart enough.. even pretty enough to do that’ kindly don’t tell yourself these cause whether or not you believe it your mind and body actually end up believing so. Start by actually trying. Make a move first before deciding whether or not you want to give up

What you don’t see in yourself is just how abundant you are, you’ve got a whole plethora of skills within you, I’m hearing you’re just enough to make your dreams come true. The doubts aside you’re actually really capable! I’m hearing “the boss b*tch that gets things done”. It’s like if you were an onlooker you’d probably say “wow he/she is really skilled” it’s like you’ve got that star quality. You could literally command a presence pile 2! Stop being in your head so much

What people find sexy about you is just how in touch you are with your emotions. I’m hearing you can easily read a room and you’ve got a really beautiful way in which you express or show your emotions. People admire how you could literally express or explain how they or you are feeling, maybe the way you decide things or show sympathy is so beautiful. You’re artistic, sensitive and beautiful. Im hearing you’ve got such a warm energy that makes people safe, like the ‘empress’ you guys are soft and welcoming.

To get closer with your sexy side, I heard right away “take charge”, could be of your life or a situation, I understand some of you have probably experienced let downs and disappointments, left you feeling like everything is so one way and that you’re just not lucky, no honey. You’re completely capable, I feel a sense of doubt, like you’re saying “you know all this and that you’re trying to get better but—‘, but nothing. You need to be firm with your life, your decisions and your mind, no more excuses!. I get that you’re a soft person whether openly or deep down inside, regardless you need to balance that. I’m hearing contentment comes from when you’re sure of something. Start by telling yourself “I believe in you” and start anticipating the best instead of the worst okay :)

To end this reading I want you to let go of the feeling that you’ve got no control over things, stop believing in this feeling that hope is just a thing for idealistic dreamers. No. Where you once shamed or let down for believing wholeheartedly in something? If so I’m deeply sorry. But you’ve got to bury the hatchet hun, you’re the inspiration of your life, the needed hope, let go of past influences (failed relationships/jobs/dreams etc). I heard they took a toll on some of you and I’m here to tell you you’ve got to release those, a star as bright as you can’t be dulled down by these outside influences anymore. Embrace your creativity and kindness. Don’t stifle it anymore. I heard kindness goes a long way for you. It’s time to release all those spilled cups and pain. Tell yourself it’s time for me to be happy :)

To start off this reading pile 3 I’m pleased to say that some of you are really getting your A game on this year. It’s like you’ve looked at the past and decided to bring to attention what is no longer serving you, I get the feeling of shining a light on your past shadows , understanding it and taking charge, it’s like “I’ve been beat down before and I’m not ready to remain in such energy” a feeling of knowing your worth, maybe some of you are recovering from doubting yourself, being confused or simply not letting go of the past, I get this energy of braving the storm, “I’ve been through the worst but I’m ready for more cause I know I can defeat it”, that’s where this hopeful energy comes from. I feel light and joyful like some of you are embarking on something new after braving a storm. “There’s no room for you anymore”

What you don’t see in yourself pile 3 is just how charming you are. I get the feeling that you ignore it or pretend that it isn’t there but wow, I’m getting that people are literally swept off their feet by you at times because you come across as fun, flirty and light. You’re not too in your face or out of reach, you’ve got an addictive laugh and a charming smile, y’all are like Aphrodite please, it’s like people of interest are easily charmed by you but tend to hide it. I’m hearing you just think you’re friendly, that can’t be it. But no child don’t hide it, you’re seen as this bright person who’s diplomatic, graceful and creative. I’m hearing “wow your minds crazy! How do you do that!”. Don’t think you’re overbearing or just a wallflower. You’re everything.com, go ahead and chant it to yourself till it rolls of your tongue like your favorite song lyrics would.

What other people find sexy about you is how stable and reliable you are, you’re sturdy, balanced and you plan things to a notch. You’re this beautiful social butterfly that’s really nurturing. I get the sense that you’re into something that’ll generate your wealth or in that mind space or literally richer in spirit or creativity. People find you responsible, cautious and well organized queen/king to top it off, you’re a great conversationalist who’s down to earth and soon to be or are successful. Some of you do remind them of a parental figure tho. It’s like you care genuinely about them and living in a world where kindness is quickly fading out you come across as this rare gem to people.

To embrace your sexy side I get that you’ve gotta just be you. Don’t restrain yourself! Keep being that diplomatic, harmonious bright person you are!, keep being kind and welcoming to people . I heard you are even kind to people who don’t deserve it, you’re a mature person and I heard you don’t keep what no longer serves you and honestly that’s a motto we all gotta live by, keep being stable, passionate about your goals and relationships. I really get this warm vibe from y’all and honestly other people do too, persons of interest literally melt at whatever you do yes, you’re just that charming! I heard your laugh is so precious, never lose it or restrain it for anyone. Your kindness and finally that big heart of yours that’s filled with gold. I heard ‘ whoever manages to get your love is an absolute winner in life”

Beliefs you need to let go of is your idea of being imbalanced, I get the feeling that at times you may be in a position of stress where you’ve got so many things to handle at once that eventually you start feeling like you can’t really enjoy other things in your life, could be that you’re juggling financial matters and relationships in your life that could leave you feeling in a haze. That’s where spirits step in , it’s like instead of feeling or thinking that you’re in a constant flux, learn to find a balance for these two things so that one doesn’t overlap the other, maybe you’re a workaholic or a busy student and your partner or family starts feeling neglected due to this. It’s like take some time to plan. Set it straight and things would fall into place.

To end this reading, my advice to you is to keep being in this positive mindset, keep being determined and wishing the best for yourself. Retain that hope, retain that inner hunger to succeed because you will. Keep planning cautiously and wisely, keep being regal and retaining your softness & kindness, I get the feeling that you’re meant to shine and shock the world! So keep doing so, keep believing. I heard your positive mindset attracts abundance, a master manifest or! Your hope & faith is the best thing you’ve got! So keep them alive cause you are someone great even if you don’t feel like it, chant it!. “I’m the best version of myself and the best I could ever be, I attract nothing but abundance to myself”

The Major Arcana: Birth I - VII Part 2

Disclaimer: I will be speaking on the major arcana in terms of he/she pronouns for clarity and cohesiveness. I will occasionally also use they/them pronouns due to this deck containing genderqueer/ gender fluid depictions of the arcana. Please keep in mind that the Major/Minor Arcana are inherently genderless in my eyes and don't strictly follow the typical binary view in society and merely have a more masculine or feminine energy.

II. The High Priestess

Realizing that our consequences have actions we gain a feeling of what is right and wrong. This leads us into The High Priestess.

When I think High Priestess I think intuition. I feel like as we grow up and in our development as people, we start to gain a sense of what is right and what is wrong. We see that our actions have consequences, either to ourselves or to others. We start to realize if we don't think through certain situations and start to take a plan of action, we could end up with results that we weren't expecting or undesirable results.

When I think High Priestess I think of Alice from Alice in Wonderland. She is a young girl with a very dreamy personality. She wishes for a world that understands her, but doesn't quite know what that is. She follows her intuition to chase the white rabbit down the rabbit hole. Even though she doesn't quite understand why she has this need to follow the rabbit she does anyway. I feel throughout the whole movie Alice is really just letting her intuition guide her back home. Along the way she learns there are consequences to her actions (the best example being drinking random growth and shrinking potions). She allows herself to feel her feelings as well (to the point of causing a flood in the forest). She goes off instinct like a young child does before they are fully indoctrinated into society.

Looking at the card of the High Priestess I immediately notice the pomegranate printed cloth hanging on the wall, the laptop she is holding, and the color purple. Pomegranates usually symbolize abundance, the laptop knowledge, and the color purple the third eye, or crown chakra. This is a major arcana similar to the Empress in a way except she focuses more on the spiritual. The moon also symbols intuition and inner guidance as well. With the black and white pillars in the back I get a sense of balance (very much The Chariot energy that we will see in a bit). The balance of the feminine and masculine, the balance of what is right and what is wrong. Learning intuitively when to take action and when to step back and observe. This is what the High Priestess teaches us.

From learning how we affect others we start to gain empathy for the people around us. We start to become The Empress.

III. The Empress

The Empress is a very nurturing and motherly figure in the major arcana. When we go into an Empress energy we have gone through some major life situations already. Maybe we said something we regret to the ones we love. Maybe we broke a promise we meant to keep. We try to do our best in the situations we are given but sometimes they result in us affecting others. Through these experiences we gain a sense of empathy. The typical saying that we teach children is "Treat others the way we want to be treated" after all. We also start to indulge in the pleasures of life through food, media, hobbies, relationships, friendships, and sex. We become more grounded in our society and become more sensual as a result. We can also become a source of healing for others. Because of our previous experiences we can relate to others and support the people around us.

When I think of The Empress I think of Julieta Madrigal. She is a very compassionate and giving person. She is the healer in her family and seems to be able to relate to everyone in the household and to the people in her village. She is a loving and comforting presence to her 3 daughters as well as her husband. She heals others through the food she creates embedded with her healing magic. She abundant in love and well as food, both which are necessary for survival. I would imagine she is very empathetic to those injured as well as those impoverished and lacking food.

Looking at The Empress from the Modern Witch tarot deck this is a woman of magnificent beauty. She is adorned in gold jewelry and headpiece surrounded by pillows and nature. She is the queen of her realm and she knows it. Noting the lemon shaped print on her dress as well, as lemons can be a symbol of love and friendship. The pillow propped next to her throne has the symbol of the female. The Empress embodies her feminine energy, which focus on listening to her intuition and be a giving, loving presence. She is a little more passive compared to her counterpart, The Emperor, but she is just as powerful. I like to this of the Empress as an accumulation of The Magician and the High Priestess. She knows how to manifest what she wants and somewhat waits for things to come to her in divine timing.

There does come a time however where we can no longer be passive in our lives. I like to this of this point being comparable to having to choose the college you want to go to after high school. Up to Sophomore year of high school you have just been following the guidance of your parents/guardians and your teachers. But there comes a point in your life you have to make deliberate action. Basing our decisions on what we have learned about the world around us, here we enter The Emperor.

IV. The Emperor

While The Empress is feminine, The Emperor is her masculine counterpart. He is more aggressive when it comes to achieving his goals and his dreams. While The Empress is the dreamer, The Emperor is the doer. When I see this pairing appear in the same reading involving two people, I consider this a sign that the people involved are possibly diving counterparts (if you believe in that terminology).

We've learned from our experiences, learned to trust our intuition, and have learned empathy. Now we are in a position of combining all we have learned so far in life and now we get to take command of our experiences in a more involved and ground breaking way.

When I think of the Emperor I think of Simba from The Lion King. For most of Simba's teen years he was a leaf in the wind, eating slugs, swimming in clear blue waters, and hanging out with (imo) his adopted parents Timon and Pumba (I love them gay uncles). But it isn't until one day Nala finds him and tells him what has happened to his home at Pride Rock, that Simba is ignited into action. He can no longer stand on the sidelines and let his Uncle Scar rule The Pride Lands as a tyrant. He NEEDS to take action or the family he has grown to love could be tortured, or worse, killed. He has gained the inner strength and wisdom he needs to take proper action and change the course of history.

Looking at The Emperor they look to be a very serious character. With the horns sprouting from his head this gives a feeling of a ram, as symbolized by Aries, or mars energy. His red suit suggests passion, power, and bringing manifestations to life. Remember the red cape worn on The Magician? The Ankh symbol he holds can represent life in Egyptian hieroglyphics. This makes sense since The Emperor is the one that brings his ideas and his goals/dreams to life. What I love about this depiction of The Emperor is the genderqueerness they depict. They adorn green eyeliner, eyeshadow but yet they sit on their throne in a red suit and brown dress shoes. I will also not how the Emperor isn't surrounded by nature like The Empress was. He is more focused on his world and building up his wealth. He is the hardworking business person trying to provide for their family.

As we navigate the world and gain world, we reach a certain level of comfortability in our knowledge and wisdom. No longer are we purely students of life, but we can also become teachers as well. As as teachers we start to question the world around us. Why is the sky blue? Why do we abide by traditional gender roles? What is our purpose?

Major Arcana I - VII: Birth Part 1

These are my lovely and beautiful Modern Witch Tarot cards by Lisa Sterle! I could gush about these all day. Being a queer person and a person of color I love the depiction of sapphic, non-binary, and POC people in this deck. This is the first tarot deck I ever bought and bonded with. I am using this deck for educational purposes because it is very traditional in the sense that it follows the traditional depictions of the arcana, but with a modern twist. So if you were ever to pick up the Rider-Waite deck you'll be able to understand the meanings pretty well already. I recommend this deck too if you want something that is a little bit more modern! Posted above are my cards as placed on my tarot cloth. You don't need a cloth to practice but I like using it to protect the energy of my cards when I am doing readings outside the comfort of my room in an area that might not be as clean. I used to just do readings on my bed.

These are the first 7 arcana in the deck (including the fool). Lots of decks have roman numerals for the arcana, with the fool list at 0. These are numbers I - VII (1 -7). This is the depiction of birth in the arcana, starting from when you're a baby to adulthood (I would say your development from ages 0 - 18 years old). How you ask? Well I'll show you starting with The Fool.

0. The Fool

In the movie, Moana, little Moana leaves the comfort of her parents to go out and explore the world on her own! She fearlessly followed a crab to the edge of the ocean where she found a sea shell. From there she is led into the ocean where she discovers a whole new world. In terms of the tarot this is the perfect depictions of The Fool. The Fool is fearless, following their heart's desire, and doesn't really giving a damn about the consequences. of their actions. They are viewing the world through the lense of a child: curious and ready to explore the world! We all start off like baby Moana, wanting to explore our surroundings, not quite understanding them, but curious about them all the same. We just want to have fun and enjoy life! The Fool is very much a light hearted energy and I love it!

Every time you look at a card I want you to intuitively guess what the card might mean. Disregarding the actual meaning of the card, lets look at the card itself.

Looking at The Fool she is precariously about to fall off a cliff. She is unaware of her surroundings (with her headphones in her ears). She is so absorbed in her own world she can't even hear the dog next to her trying to warn her. I immediately get a feeling of foreboding as if it's a warning. I want to tell her "Watch out for that cliff!" but I know she won't hear me. Despite the consequence she might face, in the moment she is happy and content. She is surrounded and is being given energy from the sun that is energizing her. Surrounded by the color yellow I get a feeling of happiness. "What a fool" I think.

There are times where it helps to be The Fool however. When we are afraid to take a risk out of fear, it might be best to have the attitude of The Fool. To be like baby Moana and just take a risk despite the consequences. As children we often start off with this mindset of following our bliss. It isn't until we start to integrate ourselves into the world that we start to realize there are consequences to our actions.

Which leads us to The Magician.

I. The Magician

I think back this moment in Frozen. This is the moment where Elsa starts to really play around with her powers and interact with her environment in a collaborative way. She stops restricting powers and recreates the snowman she made as a child. She is exploring and changing the environment around her. She creates her own ice castle! She is no longer just observing but recreating her life. In this part of the story she is playing an active role in the events of her story. She is in a Magician energy.

Looking at the card, The magician is clad in a red robe, that to me signifies passion (red is often associated with that feeling) and is surrounded by all the elements of the tarot: water, earth, fire, and air. All the elements that encompass our world. With her wand she makes flowers bloom. She looks very triumphant and proud of her creations, but does not yet know how powerful she really is.

Once we have learned the rules of our world we long to start affecting it and interacting with it in a major way. Be it knocking something down, joining a little league team, building a tree house, or making friends in school. We are creating and inventing the world we live in. It is still from a childish point of view however. We still don't really understand the consequences of our actions. I think back to the moment Elsa accidentally hurt Anna in a pit of rage. She lashed out at her when Anna was trying to bring her back home. She couldn't control her emotions in the moment and hurt someone she loved in the process, unaware of the consequences. Realizing that our consequences have actions we gain a feeling of what is right and wrong. This leads us into The High Priestess.

As I've been writing this I have come to realize that this might need to be broken down into parts for the sake of time and my posts being digestible. Man do we have a long way to go. But I'm having fun no less!

Major Arcana - Brief Description

Hello all! I am back to talk about the major arcana and how I see it as the journey of a new born babe growing and discovering the world around them. It is the story of innocence and the ups and downs we go through in this journey called life. I have come to think of the tarot deck as a way to tell a story in pictorial form. If we were to sit down and write a story ourselves, we use sentence structure to convey what we are trying to describe, right? To me the major arcana are the nouns and verbs in a sentence while the minor arcana are the adjectives.

When a major arcana comes up in a reading the outcome of the event in question is pretty set in stone (or in other words not likely to change anytime soon). The energies are pretty set (for example if The Lovers appears in a relationship reading this can be seen as a very good sign! The person's feelings in question is pretty much set on the other!)

Below is a layout of the major arcana as seen in the Rider-Waite deck as taken from the blog La Audacia de Aquiles. This is one of the oldest tarot decks in existence. Having been created 1909 in collaboration with publisher, William Rider, and tarot reader, A.E. Waite, this was one of the first major updates to the tarot and is still used today. The tarot cards were originally playing cards dated as far back as the 15th century and were mainly used in Italy by members of the nobility. It wasn't until 1791 when French occultist, Jean-Baptiste Alliette, released the first tarot deck with a guide book that it started to become a tool for divination (source: Learnreligions.com)

Most decks are based off the depictions drawn in the Rider-Waite deck and these are considered the standard names for each card. As you go along on your tarot journey there will be decks that deviate from the names of the major and minor arcana but the concept is the same.

I will be breaking up the Major Arcana into three parts: Life, Death, and Rebirth. This way of thinking about the arcana at first really helped me to see the arcana as a whole and not just a bunch of random cards in a deck. I feel like as humans we are able to remember facts and details through the stories we tell and thinking about the major arcana in this way has greatly helped me!

From this point on the photos will be a bit lower in quality because we will be using my own tarot deck to look at the arcana! The deck I will be using is my handy-dandy and forever loyal and honest Modern Witch Tarot deck.

Let's Begin! A beginner tarot guide/advice

Hello you beautiful people! Here is my first entry into a series of posts where I will delve into talking about tarot to help the beginner tarot reader. Welcome! I want to make this as fun and interactive as possible for all of you so don't be afraid to ask questions! I'm here to help in anyway I can.

But first off, my name is MelloBlue. I have been a reader for almost 2 years now (1.5 years specifically) and there is a couple of things I'm learned in that time in regards to tarot:

1. Treat tarot like a new language

Like Japanese or Spanish, tarot is its own language. It is a world of its own with its own history, culture, and stories. Each deck has its own personality and its own story to tell which can make it even harder for a baby tarot reader. There's so many symbolic images, motifs, roman numerals, colors, pattens, designs, so many things that it can be easily overwhelming at first. What is the Chariot? Why are there naked people standing under the Moon? Is the Tower card bad (and am I doomed)? There are all things I was worried about when I first started reading.

It wasn't until I listened to the podcast Awakened Tarot by Jaclyn Kitzman (@awakenedtarot) that it was explained to me that tarot is the story of life, death, and rebirth. Specifically the Major Arcana tell this story. Which makes sense when you think about spiritual awakenings and us just growing and changing as people: the old version of us dies and we are reborn anew.

I will be making a run down of the Major Arcana (and Minor Arcana) in a future series of posts to illustrate this concept. But just remember to be patient with yourself while learning. Everything will make sense in time. Don't worry if you don't understand something initially or if your guide book's explanation doesn't make sense either. Just remember you are learning a new language (and doing a damn good job at doing it)!

2. Tarot is Intuition

In Encanto Mirabel is shown to have a great sense of intuition. She feels that there is something underneath the surface in her family's history that is causing their house to fall apart. She only gets glimpses and pieces of the true story of what is happening to the house. Even though she doesn't quite understand what is happening, she lets her intuition guide her to the truth. This is exactly what we're doing in tarot.

When you do you first 3 card spread it will probably not make any sense to you (I know mine didn't for about a month)! But the more you study and look at the card you can start to put the pieces together. It's like you're a detective and the cards are the clues to what you are asking.

When I start reading I say out loud whatever immediately comes to mind, no matter if it's the "traditional" interpretation or not. Your readings are there to help and guide you and whatever your interpretation is is the right one FOR YOU! As longer as the reading makes you feel seen, heard, and is helping to guide you in your journey that's all that matters. There is no right or wrong: It's all about you my dear!

It gets a bit harder when you start reading for other people but I recommend just reading for yourself for a couple of months to fully feel comfortable in trusting your gut instinct.

3. Tarot should be FUN!

Be like Stitch...enjoy your deck and have fun!

Over the time I've been (somewhat) involved in the tarot community I've seen a common type of attitude among new (and older) readers alike: tarot is taken VERY seriously. Which I understand, tarot is a form of divination and should be treated with respect. I recommend only picking up tarot if you have a natural, energetic calling to it for your own spiritual protection. Someone who has a natural calling and interest in tarot might not have the same protection as someone who is only doing it from a place of ego. Don't do it because it's the latest trend, or it looks cool. Do it because you are genuinely interested in it. I believe the serious aspect of it comes from reading for other people. I do take my role as a tarot reader very seriously because I am starting to affect the energy and mental state of other people. But if you're just doing it for yourself just enjoy it!

Don't worry about getting your reading right, or understanding something on the first pass. That will come with time. Get lost in the world of tarot and all the beautiful artwork that is created! Buy that silly looking cat deck (I really want the Cat tarot deck) or the cutesy unicorn deck (which I have and love). Tarot should be therapeutic and cleansing. After most readings you should feel lighter, more healed, and left with a greater understand of yourself and the world around you.

It can become addicting so I would watch out for that but if you treat it with moderation it can be a great addition to your life.

Oh! And always pick the deck that calls to you. Cause she will become your best friend. I always feel rejuvenated after getting a deck that calls to me. Your deck does not have to be gifted to you like tradition insists. You can get your own deck!

4. Clear you mind before a reading and start taking baths more often

Go to the calmest, quietest place in your house to get into a calm energetic state before a reading. When I am super stressed and tense from the day, or if I'm exhausted, I tend to not be able to receive the message as clearly. I try to think of it as you turning yourself into a tuning fork to become in synch with your intuition, your spirit guides, and the universe. I try to put on some meditative music, dance, sing, or will just do a quick guided meditation. Anything to get myself into a clear headspace. This place for me is my room where I have a mister emitting grapefruit essence into the air while I read (It helps me greatly to ease my anxiety and calm my ADHD brain). I recommend to not do tarot when you are tired. I did that once and got the worst migraine of my life.

I also recommend getting into the habit of taking energy baths when it becomes harder to clear your mind. I try to take a bath every month or every other month (I'll also dive deep into energy cleansing baths but this youtube video by stayforevertrue will help you to get started)!
