Writ240 Twitter Essay - Bluehost: What Is SEO? And How Does It Work?
Link to Twitter Account: https://twitter.com/MovementsMedia?lang=en
1. Have you ever wondered how to attract more people to your website? Well my friend Paul from @Bluehost can teach you how in his excellent introductory lesson on search engine optimization (SEO). #SEO #Bluehost https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqg3F-8jBec
2. Paul states that there are over 130 million registered websites on the internet. I had no idea so many sites had been created! To sort through these sites 90% of people use search engines such as Google. I use Google every day but have never known how it truly works.
3. After watching this video I have joined its 427,777 viewers in understanding how search engines operate. You can learn too, it’s easy! Let’s say you type “swimsuit” into Google. What comes up is a search page with a list of relevant websites.
4. 94% of people, myself included, never look past the first search page. Thousands of search pages can exist which is why SEO is so important! As Paul describes, the position of a results page is determined by page rank and what determines a page rank is keywords and backlinks.
5. Keywords such as “swim” let Google view your site. Backlinks are when other sites reference your website. Google determines the trustworthiness of a site by the number of legitimate backlinks it has, like referrals on a resume. Thus #backlinks help to improve your page rank.
6. There are two aspects to SEO: on-site and off-site. On-site means having relevant words on your site. For a swimsuit site “beach” and “bikini” would be relevant words. A word like “Pizza” would not be relevant. Unless of course your site sold both swimsuits and pizza. #onsite
7. When @Vogue posted an articleabout @Tombolo’s new shirt line, they linked the blog post to the Tombolo webpage. This is an example of off-site SEO. You can generate more traffic to your site by creating backlinks to it through other media channels such as articles or blogs.
8. A tip from Paul: “the more legitimate and influential the site is that links back to you, the more effect it will have on your search results ranking!” Imagine if @Buzzfeed with its 17.2 million subscribers linked back to your site! Your site would surely be buzzing quickly.
9. Overall, this video teaches that in order for your site to generate traffic and appear at the top of the search results page, you absolutely need SEO. A key tip I learned from this video is to consistently update my site content so that sites can link back frequently! #SEO
10. Paul concludes with a final call to action: “Good SEO takes time so the sooner you start the sooner you move up the results ladder.” Do I agree with Paul? Absolutely! SEO is a key tool in determining the success of your website.

Introduction
With the right strategy and determination, social media can be utilized as an incredibly influential tool. Think of Times Up, Fearless Girl, or Spotify’s “2018 Goals” campaign. Each of these global movements existed because social media created a crowd culture and provided them with a platform in which their voice would be heard. Media Movements is a blog dedicated to analyzing some of the most impactful campaigns to have taken place in history due to the influence and platform that social media created. Media Movement will take you through an in-depth analysis of various campaigns, explaining how social media was able to transform what started as a thought into a global movement.

How It All Came To Be
My name is Heather Brownlee, and I am a fourth year Commerce student at Queen’s University specializing in Marketing Communications. I created Media Movements to enlighten readers of the impact that social media has on our everyday lives and inspire thoughts on how one can utilize a social platform to start their own campaign. Through the utilization of digital marketing knowledge and skills learned in Writ 240: Writing for Social Media, Media Movements will act as a resource to learn more about, and share, the influence that social media has had on global campaigns. As a marketing student nearing graduation, Media Movements will act as an important learning opportunity as I pursue a career in marketing by developing my knowledge in the strategic uses of social media and how to tailor media content in order to capture the right audience.
Tumblr media
Why Media Movements?
I have always found the rapid speed at which some campaigns, or movements, are able to make a substantial impact to be quite remarkable. The source that is able to so quickly turn a spark into a flame is often without a doubt, social media. Bell Let’s Talk is amongst my favourite campaigns to date. Bell utilizes social media by enabling anyone to simply tweet or retweet #BellLetsTalk and the company donates to mental health initiatives, which is pretty amazing. I wanted to research and study some of the best campaigns to date from a marketer perspective to distinguish how social media was able to make them so successful, and so Media Movements was born. I see social media as having a massive role within the success of campaign globally. Whether political, educational, humorous, etc. every campaign or movement over the past decade has strongly relied on social media to be the platform in which they communicate.
