FLAG DESIGN
i made this to represent third culture kids - how we struggle to identify home, or being torn between two or three places at once. i used some of the yin and yang symbolism to show how though there are two forces at play, they balance each other out. color-wise, i chose brown and orange because they were earth tones and i wanted this flag to feel grounded. orange also represents youth and brown represents warmth, which i think are both very important pillars of identifying the feeling of home.

reflection / my theme song
One of the best podcasts I've listened to is Song Exploder, by Hrishikesh Hirway. Song Exploder is a podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made. Hirway interviews a music artist about the process of composing/producing/mixing a song. You can hear each layer and stem of the song on its own, and as the podcast goes on, they layer on top of each other until you hear the full song in its entirety. In between this, we have snippets of audio of the music artist talking about the meaning of each layer and stem. I think it's great and effective sound design because every singular piece of audio is informed - the artist informs the stem, the stem informs the song, the song informs the podcast, etc. The fun thing is that is has been adapted into a Netflix show, so now there are visuals that accompany it!
I listen to music very regularly, and I tend to play the same few songs on repeat. Apart from music, I don't really listen to much audio. A lot of the sound compositions that interest me are very bass-heavy, with a lot of natural sounding textures or synth textures (think Mura Masa songs). I couldn't choose one theme song - but if I had a theme song, I think that it would be "smiling when i die" by Sasha Sloan and The Moments I'm Missing" by Nina Nesbitt. Both are very "sad girl anthems", which is my self-identified taste in music.
I was going to perform to "smiling when i die" for my senior solo in college but never got the chance to because of COVID-19. The song is optimistic with a tinge of self-deprecation as humor (as you can see from the title), which I find resembles the way I carry myself.
On the other hand, I did get to perform and choreograph to "The Moments I'm Missing" with all of my closest friends in college, and I find that the nostalgia in the song and the reality check of needing to live in the moment also resonates with me deeply. This may be the reason why I have difficulty deciding between the two, as I feel like I connect more deeply with "smiling when i die", but I feel like I have "lived" and "participated" more with "The Moments I'm Missing".

Audio Remix: Conceptualization
I am thinking of creating an audio remix that immerses you in the landscape of all the places I've lived in (Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, and NYC). As a third culture kid, it's been hard defining what a sense of home is to me and I think getting to hear the transitions from one soundscape to another and then mixing them altogether at the end. It would follow a linear timeline in terms of which place comes first - it would end with the New York soundscape, but then I would start integrating sounds from HK or Singapore or Thailand with NYC so that it's a full soundscape of every place I've ever lived in. I may use a song in the background (maybe "Emigrate" or "Birthplace" by Novo Amor or "stuck" by mxmtoon) to aid, or I may just use white noise from each place. It may be too many places to tackle in a project, so if I have to narrow it down I think I would choose Hong Kong and NYC - even though I identify Singapore as home, I think HK and NYC have the strongest soundscapes and the most similar parallels.
To me, this could be interesting in exploring immigration and accepting what home means to me, which is a mix of different cultures, sounds, people, etc. I think it could also bring up some other themes, like how NYC is such a metropolis and mixing pot of culture, how Asianness in NYC, how Westernness in Asia, how they are all similar and different in their own way!

Response: True North
My initial thoughts -- I appreciated the detailed soundscape, how calming it was, and how frames looked connected when they actually weren't (or vice-versa). I love the use of perspective, especially when juxtaposed with other frames (and the use of shaky cam) because it created a high intensity -- who's there, what is happening?
One frame that stood out to me was the single stream of water in the middle juxtaposed between two waterfalls - it felt like a comparison between micro vs. macro scale. I also loved the frames where frames were disjointed and then suddenly became jointed/symmetrical. I would love to know the reason as to why the artist decided to use three frames within a frame, as well as to use the 4:3 aspect ratio of each frame.
