I am inspired by the perfect organization, and yet a sense of disorder, I feel when in nature. I credit my mother for teaching me to “observe” by pointing out fleeting moments such as the pinkish tinge of new maple buds, or the reflections left behind by ducks in the water. Visual observations and my own manipulated photographs from walks in wooded areas provide a cumulative idea folder that I draw upon to create either real and imagined landscapes. Working intuitively with colour and shape, I explore relationships between objects; where they touch, overlap, or separate.” -Marti Marti Higgins is a Mixed Media Artist from Chagrin Falls, Ohio. She creates modernistic abstract and impressionistic landscapes by instinctually exploring the emotional and evocative power of colour. Growing up near New York City in the 60’s and 70’s, abstract expressionism was the art of Marti’s’ youth. Exposure to the art of Alexander Calder, Romare Bearden, and Willem De Kooning rooted her aesthetic. The bold colour, rhythm, and subject matter she attempts to express in her artwork are due to these early influences.
