An interesting article from The Guardian earlier this year. “Making is part of being human, yet as a society we are suffering from the effect of increased screen time and the lack of real fulfilment that often accompanies that. Most needlecrafts are fairly accessible and require only basic skills and minimal outlay to achieve very rewarding results.“The rhythmic, repetitive moments necessary to knit, sew or crochet are proven to have therapeutic benefits and improve mental health and emotional wellbeing, increasing serotonin production and inducing a natural state of mindfuness.”
If you’d like to learn how to sew or would like to join one of our Knitting/Stitching Socials, please go to our website to sign up!

Studio Holder Nicola Dale: An Era of Abbreviation: A Residency with Standpoint Futures at Chisenhale Studios May-June 2017
At the completion of her six-week residency, Nicola Dale presentsed new work arising from her research into art historian Aby Warburg’s photographic collection at The Warburg Institute. Nicolaselected and abbreviated 89 images and translated them into an eight-metre mural, in turn to be used as a choreographic score by contemporary dancer Chloe Aliyanni.
Expanding ideas developed during past projects (at Manchester Central Library, Shanghai Library, the National Arts and Education Archive and the University of Manchester) Nicola has been using her Standpoint Futures residency to explore processes of accumulating and communicating knowledge.
Nicola Dale has a studio at Marketplace Studios and is a Manchester based artist who makes sculptures and performances. Her works chart human interaction with knowledge, from archaic notions of illumination’ and Modernist belief in progress, towards the narcotic lure of contemporary ‘click-drift’; and back again. Her work concerns the impact of ideology on reading, writing and learning, through the vulnerable, transient forms she makes using diverse materials such as x-rays, ice cubes, waxed thread, cocoons and breath.
Standpoint Futures visual art development residencies are for artists based outside Greater London. The residency's chief aims are to provide high quality, individualised opportunities to develop the artist's practice and career, and to integrate London and the regional UK art world to promote access and the exchange of ideas. Standpoint Futures at Chisenhale Studios, Studio4, 64-84 Chisenhale Rd, London E3 5QZ

MARKETPLACE WELCOMES MAKERS DOZEN
PUBLIC DISENGAGEMENT
Marketplace Studios welcomes Makers Dozen to our Gallery with ‘Public Disengagement’ opening on Sunday 12th March,11am-4pm.
Makers Dozen have fallen in love with making again. After a long and enjoyable period of facilitating public engagement, Makers Dozen have decided to spend some time developing each of their own practices.
Makers Dozen is made up of 12 very different makers who all produce work in different ways, within different disciplines. Making and researching together is integral to the collective’s development which centers around material exploration.
Helping one another in this making process through regular meet ups and discussion sessions, the Makers have developed multiple bodies of work which are all at varying stages of completion. This exhibition is an insight into their practice based collective, and an opportunity to see how each member currently works when they make individually. This process driven and quick fire project has generated responses from each maker based purely on what they are currently enjoying or already working on.
Public Disengagement opens from the 12th - 31st March, Friday and Saturday, 11am-4pm. Join us for our PRIVATE VIEW  on March 31st, 6-8pm. All are invited to share in a discussion around making, exploration and the works and ideas generated over the weeks.

THE ACT OF READING, NICOLA DALE Marketplace Studios resident (Studio 9)
IT STARES US DOWN Nicola Dale Manchester Central Library New performances and sculptures for Manchester Central Library inspired by what reading looks like today
• 11.30 – 16.00, 11th March • 14.00 – 15.00, 18th March • 10.00 – 16.00, 25th March
Over three consecutive Saturdays in March, sculptor and performance artist Nicola Dale will present newly commissioned works exploring how, why and what we read.
Nicola has been artist-in-residence for six months at Manchester Central Library, where she has researched its history, its architectural features, the character of its users and the nature of reading nowadays, with particular emphasis on generational differences.
Presented as part of LibraryLive, the new artworks will provide the public with a range of unexpected and enjoyable encounters with art outside the gallery system, ranging in tone from subtle interventions to bolder, theatrical pieces:
11 March: The Act of Reading Solo performances will take place at various locations around Central Library. These works focus on the idea of the individual library user: the person who sits alone, reading or thinking, lost in their own world.
18 March: Saccades This large-scale participatory work (both a sculpture and performance) designed specifically for the Reading Room, considers the Library and the notion of reading itself as a changing system, constantly moving and shifting as it passes through time.
25 March: Circular Reading A sculpture for the Reading Room with accompanying text, this work is inspired by the unusual story of Manchester’s third chief librarian, Andrea Crestadoro. The text accompanying the work will encourage visitors to imagine themselves as performers.
Nicola said:
“My work is about how knowledge and the way that it is shared is changing. Manchester Central Library’s journey from historic Reference Library to contemporary cultural space has made it an exciting site for my research. The changes to the building - reflected in the broadening of its demographic - and the way that visitors now use the space were the starting point for my work.
Conversations with two different generations of volunteers have inspired new ways of bringing sculpture and performance together.
The scale and grandeur of the Reading Room has demanded work on a more ambitious scale than I have previously attempted.”
It Stares Us Down is supported by Arts Council England, Manchester City Council, Home and a-n The Artists Information Company.
