Narrative vs non-narrative films
26/04/2024
Hi everyone! for today's lectures with Irushi, we had a look at the differences between narrative and non-narrative type of films.
We even got the chance to watch 3 films half way through in class. These were the films we watched.
Dream (Narrative film)
Is the man who's tall happy? (Non-narrative film)
Alice (Narrative film)
At the end of class, she requested us to have a look at the types of film in Sri Lankan cinema and to do research on at least one Sri Lankan director's style.
She told us to complete watching the 3 films we watched halfway in class and requested us to study these director's style of flim making at our own pace.
These are the notes I wrote down in class!

Don't Worry Darling - Movie Analysis
23/04/2024
Hi everyone! For today's post I plan on talking about a movie I watched over the weekend which is 'Don't Worry Darling'.
For starters, Irushi didn't assign us to watch this movie. I watched it because I am a big fan psychological, suspense and thriller films. I added this film to my Netflix list mainly because of Florence Pugh (She's such an amazing actress)
Here's an audio recording of me expressing my views on the movie!
I recorded this after watching the following movie critics on YouTube!
youtube
youtube
youtube
youtube
Now I have quite a lot of things from this movie I want to touch upon. But for starters, let's talk about the characters!
Characters
Alice (Played by Florence Pugh)
Tumblr media
Florence did an amazing job at embodying the role of Alice. The way she response to her visions and the reality behind her situation is done perfectly.
Alice is a strong woman who loves her husband dearly and takes on the role of an idealistic 1950's housewife. Cooking, Cleaning and pleasing her husband almost in a repetitive way.
She's also smart and fearless because she was able to discover the truth on her own. Learning that she is actually living in a false reality that was forced to be a part of because of Jack.
2. Frank (Played by Chris Pine)
Tumblr media
Frank is another character I enjoyed seeing in this film. Chris nailed the impression of a misogynistic and egotistical cult leader as an antagonist.
Frank is a character who has a god complex thanks to his male followers who joined the 'victory project' along with their partners. He has successfully brained washed his male followers into thinking that this is the ideal way to live. To live in a society where the men do all the hard work and the woman's role is to be the best caretaker for the man. (1950's ideal society)
My favorite scene in particular of his would be the one where him and Alice interact for the first time.
youtube
Here we see that Frank has a higher power over Alice. We get to see their power dynamic. This scene shows the audience that he's on top of the hierarchy and Alice is at the bottom.
His God complex also comes into play because we see that he's acting like a God who knows everything about Alice. He's aware that she knows something's wrong with the project. He's also aware that no one will believe her because she's nothing compared to him. Everyone would believe and trust in Frank.
This also gives us the impression that he sees her as a little pawn to play around with. sure... she is a challenge to him. But in his mind, he 100% sure that this pawn (Alice) can be messed around with for a while for the thrill.
3. Jack (Played by Harry Styles)
Tumblr media
No hate towards Harry Styles, but the way he played Jack wasn't entertaining. It wasn't a solid performance.
In real life, Jack is seen as a lazy to work, insecure, shut in, loser who does nothing at home except listen to Frank's victory project podcasts, unlike Alice who worked 30 hours a day for them to make a living.
I don't understand the fact that he was a kind and sensitive towards Alice in the victory project when he should ideally be a horrible character. He should be an aggressive, rude and demanding husband now that he's on top and he has taken advantage of Alice.
Alternate ending idea
The way the movie ended was so disappointing. We never got the chance to see Alice wake up to reality.
Even the car chase scene in the victory project didn't make much sense.
Another thing that didn't make sense in the ending was Franks death and the fact that his wife said "It's my turn now...". We are still not sure if we are getting a part 2 but alright....
Now here's how I would write the ending....(This may sound similar to what was in the original script and what most of the movie critics had to say)
After Alice kills Jack, Frank will call his subordinates in the real world and will order them to find her real body and kill her. Frank will live.
Maybe his wife would realize what her husband has been doing all along and she will runaway to warn the other women. Or...there could be a fight scene between Frank and his wife where his wife tries to save Alice by interrupting his call with the subordinates.
At the end, Frank sits on the edge of his seat, waiting for Alice to be trapped.
Alice runs away as fast as she can. She enters the real world! Once she wakes up she starts sweating and breathes heavily. She looks over at Jack's dead body and has a mental breakdown.
While having this mental breakdown, she sees a device in the room that beeping. She realizes it's a tracking device. She looks out the window to see there are suspicious men entering her apartment.
In panic, she hides herself and somehow escapes the apartment.
Maybe there could be a scene where Frank enters the apartment mad and upset that Alice has escaped. He decides to look through Jack's phone and notices that he has setup a phone tracking system where he can locate Alice's phone.
He smiles and tosses the phone to one of his subordinates saying "We got her boys. Bring her to me....alive." (Something along the lines like that)
This would make an interesting sequel to the film!

Rainny Aesthetic Photography!
13/04/2024
Hey there! Happy Sinhala and Tamil New Year!!🙏❤️
These days I haven’t been updating the blog much because I’m on holiday🥳 But of course during this holiday period I have to keep in touch with my blog so I’m doing that now.
From the title of this blog you can already tell what I’ll be posting. It may not seem too important, but since we learned about lighting in film, I thought it would be relevant to post these pictures I took when it was raining in the night day before yesterday!
For context, day before yesterday I went out for a drive with my fam. It was raining cats and dogs. On top of that, there was thunder and lightning. While I was sitting next to the car door, I noticed how beautiful the rain drops looked on the shutter. So I decided to take some pictures!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also took a picture of Tea Avenue while we were passing by. The blur in the photo makes the shot look aesthetic.
Tumblr media
Once we reached home and I had open and close the gate before going home, I noticed how the red lights from our vehicle bathed the tree branches close by. I had to take a picture.
Tumblr media
I have to admit that I did a few edits to some of the original pictures to make them look more eye catching in terms of brightness, tint, noise reduction, saturation, etc.
It's safe to say that I have a liking towards cinematography and lighting. I still have a lot to learn about these two topics, but I believe these pictures are a good start.
That's all for this post! I hope to post the three short videos I made with Thameena, Shiza and Ayodya on an upcoming post.
Thank you for reading! Have an amazing day! <3

COLOR WHEELS on the bus go round and round!!!
03/04/2024
Hey everyone! I have to be honest and say that yesterday I couldn't be bothered to update the blog because I was sleeping. I've been so sleep deprived because of the MI4011 presentations. I decided to take a break.
You've heard enough of my yapping now! Let's get to work!!
Yesterday Irushi did a small presentation on the Color Wheel and how it has been used in film. She even showed us examples from certain films like 'Grand Hotel Budapest' and 'Edward Scissorhands'
These are the notes I took down in class yesterday!
Tumblr media
This actually reminded me of the notes on 'Color Theory' that I noted down during Maria's (Ms. Perez, not me) portfolio lessons.
Have a look at them!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's all for yesterday's notes!
We actually did something much more fun yesterday where we had to record 3 videos with different lighting and in the same setting to show different scenarios.
I will post them soon!
Thank you for reading :D

Analyzing lighting in film - Funny story behind the research
27/03/2024
Normally on the blog I type in all my work and sometimes add in some (probably dumb or unfunny) jokes and blah blah. Today however I decided to blog about the funny (maybe scary if it happened to you) incident that happened while I was during research on the Lighting techniques Kubrick used to make 'The Shining'.
Let's get into it!
Last Saturday I was watching the 'Collective Learning' You Tube channel to conduct my research for the lighting in 'the Shining'. When I first watched it, it was in the evening, and I was alone in the house with my dog while my parents were grocery shopping.
Since 'the overuse of light for horror in the shining' was scary enough, I was already getting the 'heebie-jeebies' while watching the videos.
Thankfully, my parents came back home at around 6.30pm while I was still engrossed in the video.
A few minutes after they came back, I kid you not.... the lights in my room started to flicker while I was watching these videos. Then suddenly the lights just switched off in my room and I ran to the room shouting "MAAA! The LIGHTS WENT!!!!!".
You can imagine how scared I was when the lights just randomly started to flicker while I was learning about how Kubrick made use of lights to showcase the horrors in the film!
Anyways, that's the end of the story. Hope it gave you a good laugh. Maybe I could make a small animation one day based on this mildly traumatic experience lol.

Feedback Session
27/03/2024
Hello everyone! So this is an update on the feedback I got yesterday from Irushi and Ravindu for my presentation! (Your girl over here was too sleep deprived to stay up and type in the blog yesterday 😂)
Let’s get into the feedback!
Irushi said that she loved the experiments I did with lighting for the model and also liked the fact that I combined 2 modules to learn something. (The movie set up was for Dinendri’s module but the cinematic lighting experiments was for Irushi’s module)
She advised that I should’ve explained about the mise-un-scene in the pictures/ videos since I’ve already included them. However I would like to note that I didn’t focus much on the mise-un-scene for the presentation because I didn’t have enough time to research much on it. My only focus was the attention to lighting. For future presentations I will make sure I explain all aspects of my pictures/ videos.
Ravindu comments were mainly on my movie model. He said that he liked the attention to detail.
That’s basically it for the feedback session! Thank you for reading!😊

Presentation- Cinematic lighting Experiments!
26/03/2024
Hello everyone! It’s currently 1.30am on this beautiful Tuesday and I’m finally planning out how I want to present my work for today’s 10-minute presentation!
From my previous post you can find my notes where I’ve written about different types of lighting such as ‘ambient’, ‘practical’ and ‘motivated’ lighting.
An interest sparked in me to test these types of lighting on my set model for ‘the shining’ for mi4012.
This is the model I created from the shining! I was inspired by the ‘Danny on the carpet scene’ to create this set model.
Tumblr media
This is an example of the type of lighting we see in ‘the shining’ movie for this scene.
Daytime lighting in the hotel!
Tumblr media
Nighttime lighting in the hotel
Tumblr media
Reference shot from the movie!
Tumblr media
Now, let’s see how various types of light can change the ambience and mood of the model!
1. Ambient Lighting - Abandoned/ Ruined Overlook Hotel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By using my phone flash light and moving it above the soda bottle cutout, I was to create a light directly hitting the door at the center.
This light gives the viewers an idea that sunlight is touching the door. It could be possible that the hotel has been abandoned for so long that the ceiling has cracked. It could also mean that there’s a glass reflecting the sunlight from above.
2. Practical lighting - Sinister Overlook Hotel Ambiance
Tumblr media
The lights I used for this effect
youtube
Sound Effects
youtube
By using blinking Red and Black as the main source of lighting, it gives the hotel a much more sinister and dangerous ambiance.
3. Motivated Lighting - Abandoned Overlook Hotel at Night time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By holding the light source in front of the model, it gives the impression that someone is walking along the corridors of the hotel for the propose of exploring the hotel. It gives the impression that someone is roaming around the abandoned Overlook Hotel with a flashlight/torch.
Personal Learning Outcomes
While conducting research and experiments related to cinematic lighting, I got a better understanding on the significance of lighting in movie set and how you can manipulate and use different types of lighting to create various ambiences and moods in a single set for filmmaking.
Thank you for reading my blog :D Have a great day!

Analyzing lighting in film
This is related to the work I missed last Tuesday due to being absent. for this activity we have to analyze the lighting used in a film we have recently watched and write down essay points. This includes;
Thesis statement
Topic sentence 1
Topic sentence 2
Topic sentence 3
Conclusion statement
Since I've recently watched 'the shining', I've decided to research how lighting has been used in the film.
After I finished watching videos related to this, it's safe to say that I will have trouble sleeping tonight. (Why do I do this to myself? Is it a form of self-hatred to watch and analyze horror films that will leave me sleep deprived for days? maybe...)
On a serious note, these are the videos I watched to understand the various lighting techniques used my Kubrick to make the shining absolutely horrifying.

Film Noir - Notes/ Research
24/03/2024
Before I even began my research, I had a fascination for Black and White films in this style. (Although I've never watched such films) Now it's safe to say that I have learned quite a lot of facts related to this style of films and I can't wait to share my notes.
I've written the following notes after reading through several articles and watching videos related to this style of film.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wish I had more time to write down notes related to this, but unfortunately, I have research I must do for 'film lighting'.
Below are the links to the articles I read to understand the film noir style.
These are the videos I found on You Tube related to Film Noir!

That's it for my research on 'Film Noir'. I plan on posting about 'film lighting' on my next post.

‘1st Stage Presentation’ for 27th March 2024 - Intro
21/03/2024
Before I talk about this, I would like to mention that I was absent for Irushi’s last class. But I was able to get updates from my friend about what we did in class and what we must do for our stage 1 presentation!
On Tuesday Irushi did a presentation on lighting in film and asked the class to do an exercise where they make use of lighting to record videos from movie genres like Horror, action, romance, etc.
Since I couldn't make it on Tuesday, I decided to film my take on the lighting used a typical Horror Film.
Now let’s get into the work for the stage 1 presentation. We must do our own research on ‘lighting’ in film and ‘film noir’. Then we must talk about the lighting used in a film we’ve recently watched in terms of essay points.
This is a breakdown of what we need to focus do.

The Shining Essay Points
13/03/2024
For the essay I plan on focusing on the opening scene where the audience gets hints that our main character is leading himself to a sinister destination.
These are the points I brainstormed and jotted down. I sent these point to Irushi. Hopefully I get a response before lectures end for the day.
If not I will get started with these points. I’m planning to add shots from the opening scene as proof for some of these points.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I was able to get some feedback today from Irushi. She suggested that I figure out a topic that is related the "mise-en-scene" or the 'kuleshov effect'.
For this I’ve thought about a few examples!
1. The twins - alive and death cut
2. Head chef of the hotel speaking to Danny using the Shining
