Images like these below were an inspiration for this piece. Pterosaurs are best known from being able to fly, but azhdarchids appear to be very active on the ground and with their held up, long necks you can imagine that they made pretty good lightning rods. Some might have survived it.

An interesting little thing that I was thinking about last night was how Leon wasn't just dropped into military training, he was dropped into special forces military training. The AUPIT was a special operations team, which falls under special forces, and was part of STRATCOM. And since Krauser was the one who trained Leon, I doubt they're going to have Krauser-- a seemingly decorated Major heading a spec ops team-- be training new recruits at basic, so I'd imagine they probably just turned Leon lose in special forces training with the expectation that he'd catch up since he'd already survived Raccoon City, something they were training this team to be able to do.

So that means that the rest of the team all had fairly extensive military training already, and along comes this long-haired 21-year-old with no prior military experience at all who clearly doesn't want to be there. You have to have completed Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and U.S. Army Airborne School before you're even eligible for special forces training so Leon was undoubtedly in hell. That generally takes over a year to complete so Leon was already an entire year behind but expected to be on a team with everyone else. And it doesn't look like they made him go through all of the prior training first (meaning instead of making him do all of that separately, he picked up everything that was taught there from Krauser) since the flashback shows him with only slightly longer hair than post-re2 so it's likely only a matter of months (factoring in the time it'd take for his shoulder to heal well enough for him to be able to do training) between the end of RE2 and when he's dropped in special forces training.

I feel like this definitely contributes to the "the training nearly killed me" aspect he mentions in RE4R since military training is already hell on earth but being a year behind in training that you never wanted while also having somewhat recently recovered from a GSW to the shoulder and being heavily traumatized... holy shit. And all of that on top of likely being ridiculed by the rest of the team. Leon was already an outlier since he had no prior experience, yet he got a guaranteed spot on a special team, he got to keep his hair long too and seemingly got special attention from Krauser. And with the guy in charge calling him pretty boy I can't imagine what the rest of the team would be saying.

Anyway, this is just my ramble. None of this is probably ever going to be acknowledged in canon but it was something I was thinking about the other day and I enjoy the angst so there you have it, that's my interpretation of the "behind the scenes" stuff between late 1998 and 2002 in canon.
