The Turaga Movie Designs, Ranked
#6 Matau
Tumblr media
Weirdly the most human looking mask but rendered without any kind of expression. They didn't even give him eyebrows. Looks like he overdid the botox and sends him straight into uncanny valley territory. I get that he doesn't get any speaking lines and has barely any screentime, but contrasted with the amount of care put into his Matoran form it's a bit of a sad effort. The gold highlights are a nice idea in theory that link to his Toa form, but the blend of gold and grey gives him a weirdly discoloured look. 2/10
#5 Whenua
Tumblr media
Eh. Not a lot of personality coming through here. His mask is basically identical to the Ruru wearing Matoran. Just Some Guy really. 3/10
#4 Nokama
Tumblr media
She at least has facial expressions. Her mask was one of the simpler designs in set form but they've stripped it of all detail- maybe the designers thought the curved lines on the cheeks made her look too old or unfeminine? Eh. Some personality, but still a little bland. Don't look too closely at the body armour. 5/10
#3 Onewa
Tumblr media
Now we're getting somewhere. Most of the details of his mask have been kept, and I like how the ridges above the eyes became Big Craggy Eyebrows. Manages to avoid the uncanny valley that Matau fell into. Has personality but not too ostentatious. Fits the character pretty well 7/10
#2 Vakama
Tumblr media
Yeah, he's the Main Guy out of the Turaga so naturally he got more attention to detail. We make fun of his big monobrow but it really helps sell the character, as does his long pharoah beard. He has the vent covering his mouth but they still managed to make it expressive. The stylized fire staff is nice too. Forehead's a little tall but that's really my only gripe. 9/10
#1 Nuju
Tumblr media
Looks like a horrid little owl man. Strong gargoyle energy. Has one expression and it's Thinking About Murder All Day. Character designers understood the assignment exactly. Mata Nui's perfect creature 1000/10

Tried painting Solis magna.
I'm not too happy about the way bara magna turned out, but I think the nebulae look quite nice

Rahaga renders with a closeups of Norik and Iruini. I try to add a bit of their traits as toa, like the Pouks shoulder armor or Bomonga bigger lower arms and lags etc.

Chronicler's Company but they're Toa!
These designs are meant to be, like, a "what if", where they became Toa some time after the Bohrok invasion but before the Rebuilding. Also I decided to take this seriously and not make Hafu and Taipu identical, though I did give them designs that could arguable work for either (and swapped their Toa forms' masks for fun).
(A live-updating list of stuff I use can be found here, feel free to suggest anything not on that list via my askbox.)

Going through the 2001-2003 Templar Studios games and animations again because of course, and something hit me
Tumblr media
Vakama just uses the Sacred Fire as an excuse to share things he already knows from Metru Nui but make it appear like he's also only just hearing from it, right? Matoran or Tahu come to him with a question, he has the information but if he just gives it to them they'll be pissed at him for not sharing it sooner and also question how he knows in the first place, so he just gazes into this fancy fire and pretend he is also only just finding out, everybody happy
And I suppose the other Turaga do similar things: Nuju uses the stars (which isn't even a complete lie), Nokama probably consults the waves, etc.
And then there's Matau
And I'm sorry but there's only one way I can envision this happening:
Lewa: Turaga, what are those creaturethings coming from Makuta? Matau: Let's quickask the Almighty Kewa *walks to a branch on which a Kewa is just chilling* Matau: Mighty Kewa, what are the creaturethings coming from the darkgrounds of Mata Nui? Kewa: *caws once* Matau: they're namecalled Bohrok, and their dutygoal is to destroy. Their powerstrength is their Krana, and you need to quickfly and collect all their Kranatypes so the way to their nestlair will be opened Lewa: *confusion* Kongu: don't doubtask it
For added hilarity he always asks a different Kewa but insists that the one he's asking this time is The Almighty Kewa

Alright here's part 2, the one that requires more context
Daniel Lipkowitz was a lego employee when bionicle was first being developed and according to bs01 was actually a beta tester for MNOG
Lipkowitz actually made a number of bionicle mocs at this time and posted them to a personal site, The Sands of Mata Nui, which is what you did back in the early aughts internet-wise
Obviously from a fandom archeological perspective this old little website is extremely valuable both as a window into the past, but also as one of the oldest recorded instances of bionicle mocing you can find
Now why would a bunch of old mocs, even if they were made by someone who was a lego employee and involved in bionicle's early production to some extent, be important in this little series?
Because you might recognize a few of them, namely four: the Dikapi, the Mata Nui Cow, the Ranama, and the Kirikori Nui. All four of these rahi started out as mocs made by Lipkowitz that lego decided to make canon, albeit after some name changes
But what confuses me a little more is that The Sands of Mata Nui has 12 rahi mocs shown, but only four were made canon. Why only those four is a question I don't really know how answer, but let's look at the other eight, and see if we can taxonomically categorize them. Spoilers, to quite my relief, most of them are pretty easy.
The Mokonui seems to be a hadrosaur, probably a parasaurolophus
The Wehirua is another spider
The Kotonga is some carnivoran mammal of unknown specificity, its either some wolf or fox or snow leopard or something
The Make Kanohi is another crab
The Peki is an indiscernible bird of some kind
The Rarawhi is really the only rahi here that actually stumps me, mainly because its described as something in between a reptile and an insect, so I really got nothing here
The Kouroua actually gives us something interesting: It's a sloth! I'm honestly surprised there aren't any other sloth rahi
And lastly we have the Pakipaki, which seems to be a parrot large enough to ride like several other bird rahi in the mu
And there, that's it, every rahi, taxonomically organized to some extent
