He’d only been in town for a couple of days, and he was already starting to feel a little more free from the tangled place he used to call home. JJ’s mind was calm. Worry slipped in and the usual doubt ran through their mind, but JJ was calm. So far, so good. They just hoped it would stay that way.
The aquarium was JJ’s new favourite spot and he’d even applied for a job there, but until then, JJ found himself wandering Sunhollow in the darkness. Tonight, they lie on the cold tarmac of a quiet road along the centre line. The flatness of the road grounded them, and the lack of street lights in the area illuminated the pin pricks of light amongst the black blanket above him. Calm. JJ wasn’t even aware of the soul watching from the sidewalk, his mind clear and focused on the burning light above.

what was the reason diana decided to go out on a boat ride? she had no clue herself. usually, she preferred staying at home, laying in bed, and watching a movie, but somehow, she was convinced to go on a boat ride with malani. with a sigh, she followed after her while shaking her head. “i’m trying, i’m trying!” she shouted back, attempting to move her feet a lot quicker. by the time she got to the boat, she was already feeling slightly exhausted. it’s a wonder how she’ll survive if she ever travels. “thanks,” the brunette responded, taking her hand to carefully get on it. “”

SMOKE POURS FROM HER LIPS, and mimi sticks out like a sore thumb on the beach. the dark sunglasses and attire hardly help, but it’s not like she truly cared in the first place. mimi takes a glance over to her old.. friend ?? fling ?? it’s all a bit cloudy, and it doesn’t bother her enough to try and make a clarification. “ so, ” the woman begins, a half-assed attempt to break through the noisy waves and beach goers enjoying the beautiful day. “ how goes it in the life of miss malani herrera ?? ”

Distraction in this instance came in the form of a seashell, stopping Cherry in her tracks as she worked to carefully uncover and collect the pale blue exoskeleton, almost seeming to forget what she was doing until the younger femme’s voice echoed in the air around her. “Hey now, you can’t expect me to just leave such a beauty lying around.” Bare feet are traveling quickly, across the sand and the boardwalk, though both know there’s no risk of her actually being left behind, free hand wrapping around Malani’s own as she pulls herself up onto the boat. “Thank you, m’lady.”
an amused smirk appeared on her lips when she looked back and saw what was the cause of cherry falling behind , “ you know , i have a huge collection of those back at home , i’ll have to show you sometime . “ she was giddy over this - finally having a buddy who could get way too excited about seemingly mundane shells with . heat rose to malani’s cheeks at the other’s compliment , “ says the real beauty herself , “ lani responds , “ how lucky am i to have actual royalty on my boat today ? “ laughing , she curtsies before heading to the captain’s chair . “ well ? catch me up on the life of cherry . “

lux dragged behind , high heels in hand , trying to keep up with the brunette in front of her . “ it would be so much easier if you weren’t set on leading , ” she remarks with a small laugh , refusing to place the blame on the clear culprit . regardless it seemed every time that she did catch up lani took two more strides ahead , “ see that all depends , if i keep you waiting can we stay on dry land ? ” she retorts back , feigning annoyance in her tone . “ and where were these manners when i was trying to catch up ? ” she smiles before taking the other girl’s hand in hers .
it was clear to malani that lux didn’t really seem like the type who did this often - why else would she wear heels , of all things ? “ i did tell you we were going boating today , right ? maybe next time i can lend you some clothes that are a bit easier to move in , “ she bites her lip , not even wanting to think about how uncomfortable she must be . “ staying on dry land ? sounds pretty boring to me , “ malani jokes , “ at least just go out with me for a little bit ? and if you hate it , i’ll turn us right around , “ she promises , helping her into the boat , “ have you ever even been boating like this before ? “

Hodaya was running after a new friend, who offered to take her on their boat. “Hey, it’s kinda a pain in the ass to run in flip flops,” replied Hodaya, jokingly, “Can’t wait to see these sights. I’ve got my GoPro, if you’re cool with me vlogging this little boat trip.”
“ oh , i promise , there will be plenty of sights to see , “ malani says , eyes scanning the water as she maneuvers them away from the dock . “ it’s so cool - all you can do with that little camera of yours , you’ll have to show me your ways sometime . “ she’d always admired all that hodaya could do , and was always impressed by her work . “ you wanna film that patch of coral down there ? “ she points to the water , “ i’ll hover right over it - you’re bound to see some cool stuff in there . “

“ma’am, are you trying to tell me that you would dare leave this harbor without your noble steed?” he beamed, tying his shoelaces into a bow before his feet were carrying him forward in a quick motion in an effort to catch up to her. reaching out, his fingers grasp at hers, using it as leverage as he pulls himself up into the boat. “you seem to have forgotten that i have both our son,” he raises the tiny carrier in one hand. “and telescope in tow.” he beams, sliding the duffle bag with said object onto the bench along the side of the boat.
she shook her head , a genuine smile on her lips , “ oh , of course not - you know our rule , wherever one of us goes , the other goes too , right ? “ she held out her pinky , offering him the opportunity to link his with hers as a pinky promise . gentle hands reach out to grab the tiny carrier from him , “ our son’s very first boat ride - he’s growing up so fast ... ” she jokes , her hand over her heart . moving along , her hands run over the bag on the bench , “ thank you for bringing this , baby - now i have all my favorite things with me today . “ once the boat was anchored away from shore , she slides over next to him , leaning her head on his shoulder , “ we out to do this more often , you know . little family outings . “

carson tosses his head back and laughs, “i’m coming i’m coming.” he threw his backpack over his shoulder, stepping on to the boat. “i can’t help that you practically ran here!” another laugh falls from carson’s lips. “you sure you know how to work this thing?”
“ sorry sorry , “ malani giggles , “ guess i’m just excited to get out there . “ tossing carson a water bottle from the cooler , she gets comfortable in the driver’s seat , “ drink up bud , gotta keep you hydrated today . “ she smiles , always one to care about the wellbeing of others , “ are you kidding ? of course i do , i’ve been driving one of these since i was 12 . “

the history
malani was born to two marine biologists on the coast of the big island of hawaii, so it’s safe to assume she spent a majority of her childhood outside in nature. since the time she could walk, malani was running on the beach barefoot, making friends with the turtles, and hunting for seashells. since she was homeschooled, she never really had many human friends, but she had always considered the earth to be her closest friend, and she still does.
she has always been a sweet girl, her parents taught her to be empathetic and understanding while also still being able to stand up for herself. malani adored the few friends she did have on the island, and frequently went on hikes (or adventures, as they liked to call them), went surfing, picked up the trash on the beach, or hosted bonfires on the beach in their spare time.
she’s also always had a deep love for animals. growing up her parents always seemed to take in every stray they found, so the herrera house was often times a bit zoo-like. malani also learned how to scuba dive and snorkel at a young age from her parents, so she enjoyed swimming with dolphins and sting rays.
when she was only 13, her mother was diagnosed with brain cancer. it developed super fast, and there was nothing the doctors could really do. only six months after the diagnosis, malani’s mother passed. this tore little lani apart. she retreated into herself and became only a shell of who she once was.
only a few months later, a devastating hurricane hit her island. when the storm landed, her father had to rush to lock down his research station, leaving little lani to attempt to secure their house by herself. she desperately collected all the animals she could before boarding up her house, but she couldn’t save them all. there was nothing else for her to do for hours until the storm passed besides huddling in the corner of her room, holding on tightly to her animals and her mother’s journals.
when the storm passed, their was not much left of their home, let alone their island. basically everything had been destroyed or flooded. it was after this that lani’s father decided to move them out to south carolina to be closer to his best friend - who also happened to be lani’s best friend’s sebastian’s, father.
life in south carolina wasn’t any easier. lani missed her old life in hawaii more than anything. she didn’t think she ever belonged anywhere besides her little house on the beach. there, she was extremely quiet, and kept to herself. she was homeschooled, so she never really had any chance to make a lot of friends.
she graduated a year early from high school, and moved out to california to study marine biology and follow in her parents footsteps.
little tidbits
malani works for a marine rescue sanctuary - she’s part of the team who responds to emergency calls of beached/stranded animals, or animals caught in nets. if she’s not out in the field, she works as an assistant to the veterinarians, or sometimes gives tours to guests who visit the sanctuary.
she’s much more extroverted now than she was growing up. not exactly the loudest person at a party, but she knows how to have a good time.
this girl...is literally the most emotional human being ever. she just feels everything to the extreme, and has a hard time controlling her emotions. she cries at like, everything.
she’s definitely the type to have beads and thread in her hair and seashell necklaces on constantly. she just loves that vibe and the beachy look.
storms are still her biggest fear. they just terrify her. she always has an emergency bag packed in case she has to evacuate suddenly, and she has detailed plans as to how to secure her apartment if need be.
struggles with anxiety (separation anxiety especially) and really fears losing the people who are closest to her.
literally falls in love with everyone she meets. she just really likes to see the good in everyone, and she believes that everyone deserves someone to believe in them.
she and sebastian have a pet turtle named salami, and it’s their pride and joy.
very passionate about social justice issues. she’s vegan, and always tries to be as environmentally conscious as possible.
