You’re a passenger on this ride, not someone in any semblance of direction I was left wondering why I was a fly on the wall for some interactions. While you think you have some sway as to how the story pans out, able to choose between a couple different speech or text options, those interactions end the same. Conversations are largely written well, but even that’s sidelined by slow pacing. It meanders to band stuff and then just goes back to people hanging out. The characters are like the narrative: aimless and without direction. I care more about OFK’s holographic cat than I do its creator or fellow bandmates. Even when one protagonist makes what’s clearly a wrong decision, I ended up siding with them because every other character went overly - and unnecessarily - dramatic about it. They’re selfish and completely self-absorbed a number of side-characters come and go, and only one makes our protagonists look like good people. The protagonists take stress naps and generally seem like the world is against them. The first episode is a lot of inside baseball, people living in LA seemingly want to impress upon you how amazing they are for just that. Tyrian 2000 still possesses the original’s twitch-inducing gameplay and still requires a good deal of luck as well as skill to get through the onslaught of enemies. It’s an interesting nostalgic touch, if nothing else. A jukebox option allows you to listen to all 25 music selections from the game. The sound and music, like the graphics, don’t seem to have moved too far from the original game either. The ships are actually constructed in a paint program capable of creating PCX format graphics files. Tyrian 2000 also allows you to edit your own ships with the Ship Editor. Additional points are given based on your time and the number of ships you have left. A “timed battle mode” asks you to battle through one of three levels to get on the high score board.
